i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living

i believe

I BELIEVE
the following is what i believe
after 41/2 years
of reading articles on alzheimers every day
listening to lectures
giving lectures on alzheimers
doing q&a sessions on alzheimers
talking with alzheimers specialists
experiencing things myself

if i could rewind my life back to when i was 40
i would do these things
aggressively
since in studies it has been shown to decrease slow down
or some folks think
prevent alzheimers disease as well as stroke and heart disease

exercise on a regular basis
minimal walk 5 days a week for 30 minutes

control blood pressure
as more and more studies are done
this becomes more and more important
years of elevated blood pressure
dooms a person for a retirement of poor health
dementia stroke heart disease

this along with exercise is the life blood of a long life
with fewer diseases
a study linked here will be published in lancet soon
that shows that improved nutrition markedly improved
the memory of
a group of patients with memory loss
i listened to a lecture recently from a ucla researcher that
said the same things
even if it doesnt prevent memory loss it can delay its onset
by several years
long enough to see a grandchild be born go to kindergarten
graduate from high school go to college get married
well worth the effort i would say

several of the vitamins like d b12 b6 b1 e folate
are important in maintaining a healthy brain
i am surprised how many people are actually deficient in these

eg i have an elevated homocysteine level
this is associated with an increased incidence of heart disease
stroke and dementia
taking folate and b12 actually decreases the homoscysteine level
which can decrease the risk
proper nutrition getting more of these in the diet help also
just wish i had done these aggressively for the last 25 years

then tied closely to nutrition
is control of your cholesterol
keeping your ldl level at a  normal level
for me and my siblings less than 100
using a statin drug if its needed

eg i have a brother the rainwater one
who is now a vegetarian who is using nutrition to control
his lipids and blood pressure
he has stopped his blood pressure and cholesterol meds
he has the best numbers of any of our siblings all 7 of us
he takes vitamins and supplements but no other meds
all of the things in preventative studies that helps he is doing
he probably is the one that is helped the most by doing these
things mentioned above

add to this reducing stress
having normal sleep habits
being happy

makes for a healthy life

now you have to die of something
but maybe not stroke heart disease or dementia or diabetes

what if we started our kids on this regimen the day they are born
what misery in their lives we could prevent
