ANTS
rule number one
if they aint bothering you dont worry about them
ants do have a reason for being on this earth
yes that even includes fire ants

my philosophy on fire ants
if they arent in my garden or where i step on them
and get bitten i dont worry about them

here at the country n the three ants that are a problem
are


the fire ant
when i start watering my garden well or if we get a bit
of rain they will pop up in various places in the garden
i usually step in them
or
put my hand on top of the mound when im tending the garden
only realize they are all over me when the leader says
ok are we all in place
in my shoes up my pants under my gloves under my collar
when i say go the leader says
lets all bite at the same time
one two three go
thats when it hits me hard that im covered with those little
varmints
and i usually shout &^%$)#@


then for some reason the sugar ants take a liking to our kitchen
they will go for months and months then
bam theres that long line of ants like a african safari
going up a hill or across a plain

the fire ants i control with old fashion grits sprinkled around
the mound and or
spinosid sprinkled around the mound
then
a solution of orange oil poured all over the area
that usually gets rid of them
granted they pop up somewhere else but thats ok
some folks sprinkled molasses over the area

then the sugar ants are controlled with
boric acid or roach pruff is one brand and jelly or jam or
honey
i take a lid from a jar
add a sprinkling of boric acid
add a tsp of home made jelly or preserves
mix it all up and leave it sitting around
they attack that lid so thickly that it looks black
after several days sometimes a week
the numbers seem to just go away

be patient on this treatment as they ants have to take it
back to the mound and feed it to the other ants there
eventually wiping out the colony

if i get tired of waiting i will spray a solution of orange oil
along their path or on top of them
they do not like orange oil and will try to avoid crossing
the orange oil line


then there are the red ants or harvester ants
they will take a portion of your yard and in a big circle
take over it
they are really harmful unless you stand on their mound area
too long
like they say ok if you arent going to move we will send an
army over and bite you
when they bite it hurts then it hurts worse then it hurts worse
almost like a bad arthritis spot on your joints

you dont need to get rid of them unless they are hurting you
or unless they have deformed a big circle of your yard

i scattered a large amount of seeds on my garden bed to establish
some buckwheat for a green manure crop
looking closely at these little guys they had moved a large
quantity of these seeds to their mound 15 yards away

so i dont treat the harvester ants since they aint bothering me
although if i had a dumb dog or had small kids i would
treat them

one treatment for these red ants is to sprinkle aspartame or
equal or nutra sweet around and on the mound
it seems to make them go away killing a lot of them
kinda scary huh since we some of us use this in our drinks

i never read the book
but
i saw the movie multiple times
it seems this story means more to me now than it use to
sometimes i feel like the spider
knowing whats coming and trying to get myself and others
to be ready when the time comes

now there is another charlottes webb
but its illegal in
most states in the united states
thank goodness for colorado


charlottes webb is a strand of marijuana that has a
low thc level that has a low amount of this active
ingredient in marijuana

its this low level thc that seems to have properties that
may be beneficial to two groups of folks
kids with uncontrollable seizures
not responsive to the other usual legal drugs or to
the electrical stimulation or zapping of seizure centers
in the brain by neurosurgeons

if you have ever seen the videos of these kids
or
if you saw the story on tv i think it was 60 minutes or cnn
of the family from new jersey that had to move to colorado
to legally get the low level thc marijuana oil or cannabis oil
called charlottes webb

to give their kid to help it control the seizures
transporting the oil back to new jersey was illegal

in these kids some of them its the only thing that really helps

fat chance that will ever happen
they should plan on moving to the mountain high state

then
theres the other neurological disease that i am so familiar with
as are many of you
alzheimers disease

many people with alzheimers disease develop problems with sleep
i include myself in those who have this issue
this or a similar dosed thc drug may help with that
ive written before about having tried some medical thc but i
think the level was too high

the other thing its used for is the anxiety that most alzheimers
patients develop as things get bad
recent researchers have found there may be an association of the
benzodiazepines and the development of alzheimers in some folks
thats xanax valium klonopin ativan etc

so the benzodiazepines may not be as good to use in alzheimers patients
for anxiety
so
maybe a joint or some cannabis oil may help or a thc pill
they may treat the insomnia and the anxiety and
actually help prevent the progression of alzheimers disease

then
a recent study done in mice who are genetically programmed to
100% of the time to get alzheimers
it seems weird and cruel that they can take the alzheimers gene from
those who are unlucky enough to carry that gene and put it in a
strand of mice
like a gmo mouse is what it is

but they gave these gmo mice these alzheimers mice

what happened
the level of the bad stuff beta amyloid drops in the brain of these rats
thats the bad stuff thats thought to be the culprit in alzheimers disease
then
these mice do better on memory tests after they have been given the
thc compound ie the cannabis oil ie marijuana

now the hope is to extend the research to humans

the problem
the stuff is illegal in most states
research on thc marijuana cannabis oil is tightly regulated
only certain government sites are available to produce it for
research
its expensive
theres not much funding available since you cant really
patent thc or cannibus oil or marijuana
since as we all know its available everywhere

so back to charlottes webb
we have gone amuck here
this over regulation of thc for medical use
we thats the government democrats and republicans have gone
too far to make it illegal for us to use this for
these important diseases

HOUSE THAT CARING BUILT
yesterday after working for 3 hours at the habitat for humanity
build
i was working on the landscaping getting it ready for the first
phase of its installment this weekend
a nice cooled off weekend lucky for us
i sat on a turned over 5 gallon bucket in the shade where
it was cool
if you live around here you know it was hot
it got to 102 here

so i was hot
got my cold bottle of bottled water
poured some in my old floppy hat
then put it on my head letting the cool water run
down my face and neck
felt good it did

i sat there relaxing for a moment before i returned to
the hot sunny spot i was working
i looked at the workers
all volunteers coming and going
like busy bees or ants
doing their jobs
all workers today were regulars they are called
who come here and work every week
most are retired some arent like the airline pilot that works
when he can

it is amazing to me as i look at this house sitting there
all finished on the outside
and about to be finished soon on the inside
how it all got built with these volunteers and groups of folks
from churches banks high schools teachers dell computers
food companies and many others
coming together to put this house together

most who come there do it volunteerly and seem to enjoy
the work as they do it
then
there is always this sense of accomplishment and that
you know good feeling deep down inside
that you did something good for someone

something money cant buy
something missing from a lot of people

yep as i sat there took all this in
thinking about
amazed by it

i guess its the modern version of the old barn raising
where neighbors came together to build their neighbors barn

i also sat there looking at the landscaping job that we are
about to start this weekend
i realized its much like a blank canvas
i take what supplies are on hand
what monies i can scrounge
what funds habitat allows for the landscape
then
i paint this picture with what we have
this landscape picture thats up in my head
somehow i have developed this ability to visualize
what it will all look like
even 20 years later

an artist i am i guess
a landscape one
