baby formula is the best thing invented or the worst thing
moms who cant breastfeed for various reasons have this option
baby formula

the problem is that it was and is way over marketed to new moms
its caused a lot of harm in years past in some third world countries
partly due to misuse and partly due to misconduct by the makers of
the formula

when i was in practice i was always a strong advocate of breastfeeding
babies are healthy
they tend to not be obese children and adults
they get held more often and due better because of this

now there is another reason for moms to breastfeed their babies
it doesnt make the babies healthier
it makes the moms healthier

moms who breastfeed their babies for longer periods are less likely to
get that awful disease
alzheimers disease

women who are pregnant for long periods of their life without long periods
of breastfeeding have an higher incidence of alzheimers disease

this all doesnt apply to women with a family history of alzheimers disease

it appears that women who breastfeed have a lower level of progesterone
and get the benefit of higher estrogen levels and benefit from better
glucose tolerance
both are associated with lowering the risk of alzheimers disease

so men we get left out in the deal

CANCER TREATMENT MAY HELP

bexarotene an anti skin cancer drug lowers beta amyloid and may be used
to treat alzheimers disease
other similar cancer drugs under development may work the same way and
are under study now in alzheimers disease

studies looking back at patients treated for cancer have found those
patients have a marked decrease in the incidence of alzheimers disease

now
a gene called cd33 produces rna that prevents the removal of this bad
beta amyloid has been discovered
a drug thats tested for treating acute myeloid leukemia inhibits this
cd33 gene  which may lower the risk for alzheimers disease by
allowing removal of the beta  amyloid

so there appears to be some hope in the future maybe from using
anticancer drugs to treat alzheimers disease

if you are female just breastfeed for a long time

i have to take medication every day even though i hate that i
have to take medication every day
but
the hope is that ill live longer and will be less likely to die from
a stroke or heart attack before im suppose to leave this earth
and
just maybe controlling my blood  pressure and cholesterol
may slow down the progression of my possible alzheimers disease
and
the aricpet (donepezil) will slow down the symptoms of that
awful disease

when i take these medicines i want to know that they were
manufactured safely and correctly
fda supervision helps reassure me some that thats the case

these are the drugs that i take generic lipitor generic cozaar
generic aricept and omeprazole
they are all generic but are made by reputable generic companies
that are under fda regulations and monitoring
the branded drugs which are more expensive are also under the
fdas supervision

then
there are things called compounding pharmacies
these guys are able to take medications and mix them specifically
for patients
eg
i used a well known compounding pharmacy in this area eg
to mix up flagyl thats used for parasite infections and may be
the worst tasting medicine ever
they would mix it up for kids so that it was more palatable
and they would take it

they also made a concoction for warts that included an anticancer
skin cancer cream and an acid liquid that was impregnated on
a bandaid that could be used to help get rid of warts

thats what compounding pharmacies were made for
these things

then

of course they who ever they are figured out the rules and im sure
made donations to the right people so that they arent under the
fdas supervision
so
businesses were established that compounded medications for specific
patients wink wink wink by getting an order for the drug and then
it could be sent to a physcian or hospital or clinic to use
eg
injectable steroids that are used for epidural steroid shots for back
or neck pain are mixed this way
they mix up 100s of these things maybe by not properly trained
employees not well regulated by the government
result
fungal contamination that lead to fungal meningitis
if you are a doctor you know how bad that is

imagine someone like me who has this dang ruptured disk
gets tired of dealing with it
opts for a steroid injection
gets one of these contaminated shots
gets fungal meningitis
receives those toxic drugs that are worse than chemotherapy
maybe you even die from it as some did
or become permanently disabled

hum wonder if ill get that epidural shot for my disk
probably not

then here locally
a 'compounding pharmacy' sent off some calcium gluconate thats given
iv to patients who need to up their calcium level
some received contaminated medicine and developed blood poisoning
form a bacterial infection

i would hate to see how that happened
did someone pick their nose or scratch their butt when they were mixing it
was it something stupid like that

you know like when you are at a deli or food service and you see those
people with gloves on that you worry about where they been with
those gloves or done while wearing those gloves

whats the answer

i dont have one
except
call a compounding pharmacy that sends out hundreds of orders a day
what it is
a drug manufacturing site and put it under strict fda regulations

im confounded about these compounded pharmacies
how did we let this happen

LEFTINESS

i cant believe i missed left handed day yesterday
i guess we had too much going on
especially
since both my sons are left handed

this last week when we were in san francisco with them
whenever we went out to eat
we always put them on the same side of the table
or
put them on opposite corners

if you have lefties in your family you know what i mean

we remember trying to find left handed scissors when they
were growing up
now many of the scissors are ambidextrous
thank goodness for this generation

then theres the left handed baseball gloves
luckily my boys chose soccer basketball and football

my older brother is left handed as is at least one niece
and some great siblings

looking at the list of famous people
these presidents obama cliinton bush sr ford truman lincoln garfield
these artists da vinci rembrandt van gough
a lot of commedians seinfeld jason alexander jon stewart tina fey
dan akroyd don rickles richard pryor trey parker  will ferrell ben stihler

hum funny must be tied to the left hand huh

so there appears to be a trend for these left handed people
they drift towards the arts and in recent years towards politics
