would i kneel

WOULD I KNEEL
Image result for national anthem
youtube.com

as i watched all this stuff on tv this weekend
thats the question i pondered

actually
i didnt have to ponder very long
the answer is

no

now there was a time several years ago in my younger years
as the vietnam war protests took over
it really gained speed when the vietnam vets who came back
from the war
began to oppose the war
their unsupport pushed the us to eventually leave the war

this war that may of my family friends and neighbors had
to fight in
destroyed a lot of lives
why were we there in the first place

i just didnt feel right about the war
i was disappointed in our country
for all the lives that got destroyed fighting over there

thats why
i use to sit for the national anthem
like many at that time did

now years later
i
knowing
my belief systems
how i feel
i could not kneel

now i am a white southern male
who as far as i know has not ever been discriminated against

when my teenage sons went out at night
i didnt have to worry if they were stopped by the police
i didnt have to worry
well i worried but i didnt have to worry about this

i didnt ever have to
eat in a segregated restaurant ie out the back door
go to an inferior school
not be able to drink water with other races
not be able to do other things that being white allowed me to do

so
i cant really put myself inside the heart of those mostly black players
i havent lived through what they and their families have lived though
but
i can respect them for doing what they feel needs to be done
peacefully

the two most memorable pictures for me from the last weekend
at the national anthem ceremonies at the nfl stadiums
were

wideopencountry.com

meghan linsey
a white country western singer
as she finshed singing the national anthem
both nfl teams stayed in the locker room
she kneeled down
to support
the others right to do so

i must say as i watched her sing the national anthem
a rendition
that as a lover of country western music
just makes me feel tingly inside to have it sang that way
yes
i teared up listening to her sing it

the other
was al villanueva
the big ole offensive tackle
a decorated medaled iraq /afghanistan war veteran
he stood at attention
his hand over his heart for the national anthem
still
he supported his teammates right to kneel during the anthem
to protest those indignities that are wrong with race relations
in america
they supported his right to stand outside for the national anthem

so
knowing all i know
knowing how i feel
knowing how others feel
i feel certain that
i would
stand at attention
my left arm would be locked around my fellow teammates right arm
my right arm would be extended down with my right hand
on his shoulder
my black teammate
so he would know that i supported him
then
i would look up to the fluttering flag
knowing what it means to us
listening to the anthem
a good singing of it like meghan linsey did always brings
a tear to my eye
a fluttering in my heart
then when those planes or helicopters fly over
thats when the tears start to flow
the chills come all over my body
i think of those like my uncle shot in ww2
my neighbors killed in vietnam

yes
my answer would be
no
i would stand

weekend musings

WEEKEND MUSINGS

i sure enjoyed the football games this weekend
this is my favorite time of the year for football

it was so painful to see peyton manning throw that
interception in the 2nd overtime of the game this weekend
i think i rather just see a team get steam rolled than to
see a painful ending like that
that one play was the difference maker
a super bowl could have been in the offer for the broncos
it will be a long off season for peyton and denver

but im glad that ray lewis will get another game next week
he is such a powerful player
hell be missed
to bad he has to play new england next week
prediction is thats new england goes to the super bowl
and wins it all
they are a machine

another prediction
tebow will go to the patriots as a utility player
wildcat hback punt team tight end receiver and
third string quarterback
if anyone could work him into a system and handle
the circus around him it would be
belichick

then there was the come from behind seattle going ahead
with 21 seconds to go then letting atlanta score
by icing the kicker with a few ticks left on the clock
you know they call timeout just when the kicker is kicking
the ball
except
it was wide right and atlanta got another chance
atlanta won
bet the seattle coach is sick
bet no one else will try to ice the kicker this season
talk about a long off season

prediction san francisco vs new england
new england wins
tom brady mvp of super bowl

we went to the movies this weekend
to watch zero dark thirty
that cia lady was kickass
as was the seals that went after bin laden
wouldnt want to mess with those guys
during the raid it felt like we were with them

it was a two eyelids up
which is good for me
and a two thumbs up movie

HOW ABOUT SOME FOOTBALL

it seems so long ago since the super bowl
last february
i thought this day would never come
when the nfl season would start
and it starts with the cowboys and giants
great match up for the first game

since im a cowboy fan of long standing im even
more excited this first game has the cowboys
playing

maybe what they should do is have two seasons
of eight games then a period of time where everyone
can heal up then play another eight games then more
time off then play the playoffs and spread it out
over more time then maybe a month off then the
super bowl
stretch that season out so we can have football all
year
its just hard to go from february to september without
professional football

there are teams i always look for when their games
will be played

new orleans saints
drew brews is fun to watch a good qb a coach and
a good person off the field

greenbay packers and the new england patriots
those qbs are fun to watch
you know youll see a good game whenever they play
how come those two teams always have a good team
maybe jerry could take some lessons from them

ravens and 49ers
like to see those two brother coaches coach
will watch them play no matter who they are playing
will always watch ray lewis play linebacker
he always plays so hard and tough
although hes not good at video games

sometimes the bears
just to watch the qb sulk not suck

then the two new additions to my list
the colts and redskins
those two new rookie qbs luck and rg3 are going
to be fun to watch for several years

then finally i will be peaking in at the browns
just like colt mccoy since he played here at texas
an underdog from a small school that few believed in
but he showed them how good he could be
hope he gets a chance with the browns or somewhere else
to prove himself

and of course
there is tebow
cant wait to watch him play and see if
he can prove himself
hes won everywhere hes been
he has it
admittedly he throws the ball like nolan ryan did early
in his career
you never know where the ball will go
should be fun watch tebow doing his tebow thing this year
good luck wish him well

yep how about some football
cant wait until tonight
