my historian brother has this saying
take care of your tools

we need a saying about our mother earth
take care of your earth
there wont be another one

on earth day
my wife she and i didnt go to an earth day celebration
we had planned to attend the one here on sunday in
santa barbara
where the earth day event happened that stirred the
earth day celebration in the late 60s

we were invited to a brunch in montecito
but first we did a short hike
up from the house onto a large hill that overlooks
this whole area
looking out over the ocean
then turning 180 degrees to see the mountains and valleys
you can see the beauty of this place
what makes it so special

looking way off into the distance
there they sit
those oil platforms
that were the cause of the event that triggered earth day

as they were drilling there in the late 60s
something went wrong
and
gallons and gallons and gallons of oil spilled out
into the ocean
thanks to winter storms
the oil worked its way to the beaches
they say the oil was so thick you could hardly hear the waves

the wind carried the oil higher onto the beaches further than
usual even for high tide

killing lots of birds fish seals dolphins and other animals
completely devastating the local economy for months
for years

the public outrage sparked the earth day movement

having lived here during the devastating thomas fire
and the following mudslides
seeing the destruction
seeing how devastating it was to the ecomomy

i cant even imagine what it was like after that oil spill here

the beauty we were looking at
the beauty that makes this place paradise
to think it was wiped out that day
for a long long time

i think back to stories my dad use to tell about the ouachita
river in southern arkansas before the oil boom hit in the
early part of the century
story of the fishing and hunting there
that was destroyed once the oil boom kicked in
completely destroying the beauty of the river for generations
lucky now it is recovering almost a century later

i remember a creek near my grandparents house in lawson arkansas
that flowed eventually into that ouachita river
it never ever had fish in it
it was always covered with this oily sheen from the
oil wells up stream
later in life when i went back there years later
the stream was clear
again a generation maybe two later

then i read this morning that the plastic floating in the pacific ocean
is about 620,000 square miles in size
a smart kid came up with an idea on how to harvest the stuff
bringing it back to shore over time for recycling

we cant keep doing this stuff to our earth
it is resilient
but it has its limits im sure

as has been proven for years
we cant wait on industry to take care of our earth for us
we have to make them take care of it

commonly they wait for some disaster like the above before they
are forced to fix things

lets not let them destroy our earth

its interesting that the hunting and fishing groups are some of the
best conservation folks for the earth
they realize like i do that if they dont take care of mother earth
there wont be much to hunt or fish

there may be another earth out there somewhere in that dark
black sky we see at night
but
we aint ever going to get there

MAKE EARTH GREAT AGAIN

thats what i was thinking last weekend
saturday april 22nd
earth day

now that should be the slogan for all of us
we only have one of them
it cant be replaced
we cant leave and go somewhere else
if we mess this one up

yes i know we think we want to go to mars
billions of folks arent going to fit on that planet

so we are stuck with this one
there will not be another one
so
we need to do what we can to preserve this one
so our future generations
can survive

i remember as i have written before my first
time to see smog
i thought it was just some weird cloud color sitting down
on the los angeles basin as we drove for the first time
over the cajon pass down into that basin

my historian brother who was driving
said
no thats not a cloud
thats smog

it burns your eyes
makes you wheeze
makes it hard to see things at a distance
sucks to have asthma and emphysema
and
live down in this sewer of air
i thought to myself

now thanks to laws and rules
environmental ones
the air is better down in that basin
and
elsewhere

my dad told stories of fishing on a river near where they lived
they had a houseboat on it
then
the oil industry polluted the area
ruined the streams and rivers for generations

it took laws and regulations to stop all of this
pollution

when it comes to the earth
we cant take our foot off the pedal
we have to aggressively take care of this one
there will not be another
make this one uninhabitable
then
we are done

whatever you call whats happening
whether you believe its man made or not
its happening
the glaciers are melting
i dont see what we are doing polluting this earth
is really helping it
at all

private industry is not going to do it themselves
they have proven that for years
it takes our government enforcing rules
to make them quit dumping all that stuff in the air
in the water
in the ground
that
can ruin our one earth
forever

this
ruining our planet
may be our worst threat to our country

lets
take care of it
each of us
the best we can to keep it unpolluted

if not
we are in trouble

make earth great again

recycle
plant a tree

OUR DAY

last friday was earth day
it should be called our day
since
if we dont take care of our earth
we are all goners
so
its our day
our day to emphasize the need to do what it takes
so that this earth survives
if it doesnt survive
we dont

whats good for the earth
its good for us

dumping pollutants into the earth
well documented in the past
air pollution and chemicals from industrial wastes
killing our earth
killing us also

as goes the earth
we go

last week i sat at a friends table listening to this young person
who is from alaska
talk about the polar cap
how they use to be able to reach out from this building
and
touch the glaciers
now years later
you have to hike several miles inland just to see a glacier
thats
how much warming has occurred
how much has melted there

then enter the chinese and russians up there on the arctic circle
working to use that route to transport things to europe and beyond
a route never available before
but
now thanks to whatever is causing this
they are both there trying to seek an advantage
maybe even more sinister reasons

climate change no matter what its cause needs to be stopped

i personally think its the cyclical events that happens with the weather
that has been knocked severely off kilter
by our human contamination of the air and water
so that it may not be possible to recover from all this

as i have said
we cant be wrong about this
if we are
we and our earth are
doomed to extinction
like
the dinosaurs

its the only one we have
except
i hear theres one maybe several generations away
in the far bounds of the solar system

we can rule out going there any time soon

we all of us are gradually destroying this earth
the only one we have
thats not replaceable

some countries are doing it faster than others
we in america did our fair share of destroying it
in the past

we are better but still have a long way to go

now im a pretty green person
collect rainwater
generate 40% of our electricity with solar
use as much energy saver appliances and techniques i can
drive cars that get 35-38 mpg
generate only 2 trash bags of trash a  month
the rest plastics glass metal metal cans cardboard paper are
all recycled
produce a lot of my own vegetables
and
of course eggs

i am one of the good guys very pro earth
and
i went to the website to calculate my foot print

it would take 4.6 earths to support the world if they all
lived like i do
hate to see what it would be like for someone who didnt care

it would take 20.6 global acres of this earth to support
my lifestyle

well i do have 10 acres here at the country n

so its our planet
only we can save it for our kids

this needs to be apolitical
i do like eg the way the hunters and fishing organization try to
protect the environment
they know the things they like to do for recreation will go away
if its not taken care of

so
lets all save this earth
we dont have another one

POST TOUR
well we did the funky chicken
tour that is

the first stop was at the sunshine gardens
where people can rent space lots to do gardening
there just seemed to be hundreds of them

we poised in front of the portable chicken coup that
was to be raffled off
we were hoping the couple i and s would win the coop

i could have stayed there all day

then there was this interesting space ship one
the hens lay at the top
the little girl was looking underneath at one of the hens
i was looking at the laying boxes

my wife she and i enjoyed this site
it showed we had a bliss of a day
she of course liked it for the big chicken in the front yard

mobile loafs and fishes
this is the place where we spent the longest time

i asked a lot of questions of this poor volunteer
as she seemed to be the brains behind their chicken operation

i really loved this rainwater collection tank
i even hugged it a little
if you have a rainwater tank you understand

its made of ferrocement and wire
it holds about 800 gallons
the water will be used for the chickens and for the garden

then i managed to catch the volunteer gardener
asked him more questions than i did the chicken lady

here is a hugelkultur garden they planted
these are built and are used as a fence around the gardens
logs in the bottom
then leaves newspapers grass clippings  compost dirt
greens and browns greens and browns
note all my garden beds have been made using this method
all the produce from the garden the chicken eggs are used
to feed the homeless

the most impressive of the 14 sites
well maybe the 1st one was that good also

pat summitt has left her job as head coach at the university
of tennessee
she was allowed to stay on this year as head coach after
coming forth with her diagnosis of alzheimers disease
if you watched any of the tennessee womens games you could
see that she was not the same
luckily she has been surrounded for years by great assistant
coaches who carried things this year

she will now be the emeritus coach of the womens team
and will no longer do the coaching of the team

i am on the same meds she is on and know just the side effects
of the medicine on sleep habits and on fatigue can interfere with
your day to day activities
it must have been tiring and stressful for her this year dealing with
everything

hats off to the university of tennessee administration for taking care
of her into the future so she can continue to be a productive person

many dont get that chance
they get fired or are asked to resign
they just stay to long

congratulations to pat summitt on her new job
stay now as long as you can
womens basketball is better having you around

WTEA

its walk to end alzheimers time again
this is the annual major fundraiser for the alzheimers association
so become involved with your local walk and donate or form or join
a team
go to the alzheimers association website to find the team in your area

cow breast milk, nintendo nystagmus, earth day

COW BREAST MILK
now this doesnt sound right
it seems the chinese have incorporated the genes for human
breast milk into a cow so the cow is producing human like
cows milk

does that mean that everyone now will have a cow in their
back yard to go with their backyard chickens
maybe a new website called backyard cow could be formed
and funky backyard cow pen tours could be arranged

do the babies have to suckle the cow to get the milk as
fresh as possible
i think not

just milk the cow put it in the bottle and give it to the baby
or do you use a breast pump(s)
does the baby call the cow mom
at what age do you have to wean a baby off cow human milk

am sure the formula companies will be some how get involved to
make their profits and keep those moms from breast feeding

does your child drink breast milk or formula or now cow breast milk
will now be the question when you go in for your babies visit with
the doctor

some how mother nature knows best
am sure breast milk is better

be careful now and dont make mother nature mad

NINTENDO NYSTAGMUS
the new 3 d games are causing people to get vertigo or dizziness
seems i get that if i play the regular non 3 d ones
i always lose on them so gave them up a few years ago

recommendation is that you take breaks from playing the 3 d
games every 30 minutes to prevent the vertigo symptoms

or just take dramamine or meclizine and keep on playing

EARTH DAY
remember earth day is friday april 22 this year
we need to practice earth day every day in our lives
eat organic when possible
live green
recycle as much as possible
this earth has taken a lot of abuse this year
