karla

KARLA
Hometown, Texas

ive written about karla k morton before
she was the poet laureate for texas in 2010
here is her website

one day my wife she was listening to npr interviewing her

ms morton for her project that year planned to go
to small towns in texas and meet students there
do some teaching on how to write and
to collect examples of students drawings and writings

my wife she who sometimes can be persistent
or is that stubborn
called her and asked her to come to her school

a school where you go to if you get in trouble at
your school
a school where if it had been around when i was
in school thats where i would have graduated from
along with my 4 brothers

she agreed to come to the school
she spent the night with us
and was mesmerized by our house and our country n
and as a gift to us
she wrote a short poem for us thats in this book
along with writings from my wife shes students and
the front cover of the book above is from one of my
wife shes students drawings
..........

Love Song...

This is the heaven on earth God intended –
pale, stone walls; a cold
tin roof,  and a hearth that burns all winter long.
To drink from the sky;

to eat from the coop – pulling oval jewels

from warm sleeping hens.

Dogs, like Vatican guards, sentry the doorways.

And when we lay down

together, coyotes croon with the shooting

stars;  scorpions dance in and out of our shoes.

..........
if you have been to our place or read this blog a lot
you will recognize what shes talking about

ive not seen the book yet but there may be picture(s)
from our place in it

this new book is available from barnes & noble

karlas most published book is the one that she wrote
when she was going through chemotherapy for
breast cancer
the picture on the book is of her after chemotherapy
this is available through amazon.com

thanks karla
for the new book our poem and your help with the students
and
thanks for all the encouragement and hope youve given
to your fellow breast cancer survivors

goin green, karla k morton, thanks

GOIN GREEN
someone commented they did not know where to start
or how to go green

its so easy

rainwater-start with a container under your downspouts
and use the water to water your plants or for your
animals to drink
most common first container is a five gallon bucket
i still have them in strategic places despite having 30000
gallon tanks to collect rainwater

be careful because it becomes addicting
my brother he went from one 5 gallon bucket to 6
50 gallon tanks to a 300 gallon tank in no time
of course he hid it from the hoa

change all your bulbs to florescent bulbs
can do it gradually so you dont  have to put out so
much money at a time
over time it saves money and eliminates heat production
from the regular bulbs
(i needed a regular electric bulb to put in a lamp over
my water pump last night to keep it warm but could
not find one in our house)

turn off  lights, tv, computer, xbox, etc when not used
i have a power cord that will put things in a sleep mode
if not used

limit water usage
my wife she and i have found that since we are totally on
rainwater for our water system we limit our usage
(survived the drought ok)

recycle trash
we recycle paper, newspapers, bottles, plastic, and glass
there is a center nearby that accepts them

dont buy bottled water
use tap or filtered tap water
most bottled water is just filtered tap water any way
you pay 1000 x more for bottled water than tap water
my wife she and i use a metal reusable water bottles that
are several years old

dont use chemical fertilizers use organic fertilizers for your
yard and never use weed and feed products(they are
banned in canada and in europe)

two good locally made ones are medina organic fertilizer
and the lady bug organic fertilizer
they are usually only found at local nurseries

dont use pesticides insecticides in your house or garden
the product i use in the house is boric acid (roachpruf)
the products i use in the garden are garlic spray, seaweed,
orange oil, insecticidal soap,de(diatamaceous earth),
and bt(bacillus thuringensis)

so for the price of a 5 gallon bucket and some organic
fertilizer and some organic bug products you can now
be prettttttyyyy   green

breast cancer survivor, mammogram recommendations

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR
my wife she was listening to npr radio one day and
heard an interview of the texas poet laureate
she was talking about her year-2010- as the texas poet laureate
where she wanted to go into schools and work with
the kids on writing about their communities and towns

my wife she called her and invited her to come to her school
and work with her kids in her writing classses
she accepted the invitation

she spent the evening with us and stayed at our
place which we call the country n
her story was interesting and she was entertaining to visit with

she spent all day with the kids at my wife shes school
both the kids and her enjoyed it

the texas poet laureates name is karla k morton
she is a breast cancer survivor since 2008
she tired to find books etc to help her through this
crisis     she couldnt find the ones that worked for her so

she wrote a book of poems as she progressed through the diagnosis
chemotherapy surgery radiation treatment and  pet scans
this helped her get through this difficult time
she had long flowing straight hair that fell out  during the time she
wrote the book of poems

she gave us copies of her book      keep them in my exam room for patients
to read

go to www.kkmorton.com/beauty.html to read about her book
of poems called 'redefining beauty'-all written during her diagnosis treatment
and recovery from breast cancer

MAMMOGRAM/BREAST CARE RECOMMENDATIONS
the different medical organizations cant seem to agree on when and
how often to do breast care and mammograms
until there is a consensus then

recommend in my practice to

do monthly self breast exam
do annual breast exam by medical provider
do annual mammogram starting at 40 years old
do at 35 years old if patient wants it

FOOTBALL
was doubly disappointed watching football yesterday
hope today is better
