SIBLINGS
most of us have siblings
we have 8 kids in our family
all are usually recognizable at a distance
as we all have grey hair
that usually stands out because of it whiteness

as we all get older
ive noticed that we all are starting to look alike
especially we look like one or both of our parents
funny how that happens as we get older
everything changes

was able to spend memorial day with 3 of my siblings
we were able to do a lot of visiting and ate food
that we love
guess your would call it soul food
but it was good ole nutritious soul food

we were able to visit for several hours together
something we dont get to do very often
old memories discussed
catching up on family and family matters
then of course there was some nap time involved

all in all
a great day with three of my siblings
siblings
maybe we all should stop and enjoy our siblings
while we can

LEBRON

ok hes the man
hes the best nba player
not sure how another team can really stop him
hes such a powerful athlete and can do so many things as a basketball
player
theres not another one like him
he might just win a title this year
look forward to the rest of the games

BIRTHDAY

today is my nephews birthday-#21
hes the one i pick on in this blog some
the one that didnt fall in the rainwater tanks last year
he still has that rock to get out of that tank for me

yes bernie did it
he couldnt take it anymore

the movie about bernie  (jack black) who was loved by all
the people in town
killed the old lady (shirley macclaine) whom everyone hated
the prosecutor (matthew macconaughey) moved the trial away from
carthage texas as he felt that the carthage jury would let bernie off

no its not a made up story
its a true story

bernie was filmed in austin bastrop and carthage texas
some in carthage did not want the movie made
didnt want the town made fun of

the big concern was that the story of a murder was made into
a dark comedy

well i watched the movie several weeks ago at a showing to
raise money for the devastating worse texas ever fire in
bastrop texas
several of the locations that were filmed in the bastrop area
burned during the fire as well as the director richard linklaters
property

the murder story made as a dark comedy made this a better movie
laughter helps us deal with dark things sometimes

jack black has done his best performance of acting ever in this movie
maybe an academy nomination

i interviewed someone who worked on the movie
(ok it was my rainwater tank nephew who didnt fall into my
tank going after that limestone rock in one of my tanks)

the scenes he enjoyed the most were making the musical scenes with
jack black
the ones in the church in the mortuary and in the plays
we only see a few minutes of them but he got to see jack black and
the other singers go on for several minutes and do multiple retakes
he was impressed

the non star actors he liked the best were the people of carthage
that were just being themselves

what was jack black like to work with
he was his favorite actor ever
he is just as nice on the set as off the set
he is like a normal person just a funny one

how did it feel to be in the movie
it was exciting
he was one of the dead teenagers in one of the scenes
jack black poked him in the stomach and made him laugh
his car was in the scene but it was cut in the final editing

one bad thing was this was an internship and he didnt get paid for
working on the movie
but it has lead to several jobs on movies tv shows and commercials

he did get paid for his scene as a dead teenager

there was nothing bad about making the movie except
some of the people were suspicious of the movie and were upset
that it was made into a dark comedy

(after seeing the movie the director did good using the dark comedy
method to make this movie)

the carthage people who have seen the movie for the most part have
liked it

so if you like jack black youll like this movie
i plan to see it again and plan on buying the dvd when it comes out

its first weekend its the most successful independent film of the last year

some of the lines you wont catch if you are not a southerner
but yes those yankees should like this movie also

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

hope every one has a happy guess thats what you say valentines day
today especially my wife she
she is always a good sport about me writing about her on this blog
sometimes i do pay a price for doing it

BAGELS

every morning i eat a bagel with a fresh organic free range egg that has
been microwaved
i even have a special microwavable dish just for microwaving eggs
i like the yellow part soft almost runny
it seems to have more flavor that way but
those holes are a problem in the bagels
they let the yellow runnnnnny part come through

so why do they have those holes in bagels anyway
so i googled it as they always have the answers
well some i cant post here but

the holes were originally removed because the middle part of the
bagel did not get cooked well so it was removed
and later the hole was used to place several bagels on a stick so they
can easily be presented for sale
so google says

guess ill just have to overcook that egg or plug the hole in the bagel
with something

KEYHOLE GARDEN

here is the photo of my keyhole garden i made out of an old
watering trough
i was computer challenged to get this picture off my phone so
my rain water tank nephew who really didnt fall into my rain water
tank helped me transfer this to my computer then got it posted

when i did it google didnt like it and wouldnt keep it posted
now maybe itll stay on my blog

in the center is a 1 foot circle of chicken wire that will be 3 ft high
its buried down to the bottom of the trough (about 2 ft)
inside this compost bin i placed shredded newspaper, my compost,
chicken poop, the natural gardeners farm style compost then a layer
of leaves and repeated this layering until its full
i will keep the center part watered well and all these goodies will
diffuse out into my garden

on the far side barely visible is a wedge like a piece of pie cut
from a pie that has rock stones and crushed granite that i can
step on to easily access the compost tower and the plants in the
middle of this garden

the metal bucket is a 10 gallon bucket that is attached to a drip line
that encircles the bed of the garden with about 1 ft distance between
the circles
this i fill with water and let gravity drip the water on the plants

i am thinking about adding the compost tower to the center part
of any 4 ft square foot garden i do for novice gardeners so they
will have a ready made compost pile thats simple to use and
easy to add more compost materials

am saying goodbye to my megabank that ive been with for
over 15 years
dang that feels so good to be rid of them

first they bundled all our mortgages and sold them off
this is one of the reasons we are in this financial mess
then we the government bailed them out

then
they have made huge profits over the last 2 years
then
they started charging for everything
$5 for checking account (ive got 2 accounts)
$3 for debit card
$12 for online banking
charge for checks
0% interest rate on accounts
potential charge for use of debit card
stopped rewards program for debit card

so i pay them at least $300 a year to use their bank
now that aint right
plus the megabanks helped get us in this mess and they seem
to be profiting off us

so
i switched to a credit union
found one next door to the two branches of the megabank we use
every day
dang that felt so good to do that

$0 for checking account
$0 for savings account
$0 for money market account
$0 for checks ordered online
they pay for each use of the debit card
$0 for debit card
they actually pay interest on my checking, savings and money
market accounts
$0 for use of debit card
%1 on all credit card purchases
$0 for online bill pay

total amount they will be paying me to bank with them next
year is well over $300 a year
will make over $100 just from buying groceries with the credit card
the interest rate on my money market is 20 x the rate on my
mutual fund money market

this was all a tough decision
it easily offsets the extra im paying every month for my smart phone

i feel refreshed like i did when i quit smoking
like ive got rid of this long time addiction to megabanking

just wonder if somehow this is all not right and somehow they will
take it all away

WE GOT RAIN
we got our first measurable rain last night in over 3 months
we got 1/4 inch of rain
if you bought the water i collected off it it would be $70
the ground is actually wet looking

water it well today

we are still 24 inches behind over the last year

my nephew he is here starting to work on a new movie
he was ousted from his chair by the lightning and thunder
just need to drop him in that rainwater tank and get that

they injected him before the game and once during the game
let see they take a needle of numbing medicine
probably marcaine or some other long acting anesthetic and
inject it around the site of the fracture
think broken wrist and they inject the fracture site so you can
use the wrist so it wont hurt

know that must really hurt bad when the numbing medicine
wears off
bet he sleeps in a chair tonight
hopes he doesnt have a night time cough-ouch

bernie is a richard linklatter movie starring jack black, matthew

water tank fame that did not fall in my rainwater tanks last fall
going after a rock i dropped accidently into one of my tanks

his neighbors property burned up but his was only
partially damaged

all proceeds and donations will go to them

ADIPOSE GAS GUZZLING
we all know about miles per gallon (mpg) when it comes to gas
milage on our cars

now theres a mpg bmi ratio-i made it up
(bmi is basal metabolic index a measure of how obese you are
no its not like mpg where the higher number is good
ideal is <25 obese is >30 morbid obese is >45)

i propose a normal ratio is 1.6
eg my car gets 40 mpg and my bmi is normal at 25
so my ratio of mpg to bmi is 1.6 is normal
lets see a morbid obese bubba in a dooley getting 15 mpg
ratio would be 3.75
maybe a tax credit could be given for a low ratio
sounds good to me

it seems as the bmi goes up the mpg goes down
the us consumes an extra billion gallons of gas each
year because of our high bmis ie were obese

dont hear the politicians talking about losing weight
to help get us off foreign oil
wouldnt that be a green way to do it
for each lb of weight we gain we as a nation
consume 39 million gallons of gas a year
(39,000,000 x $3.50 per gallon = $136,000,000)
or overall
(1,000,000,000 x $3.50=$3,500,000,000)

maybe relieve some pollution and global warming climate
change or whatever you call it

economy with no new taxes or federal spending

LIFESPAN
we all want to know how long we will live

did it this morning
first i answered all the questions correctly and honestly
honestly
am on medicine to control both my hdl and ldl so i was able to
answer that my hdl is over 45 and my ldl is lower than 100

when the calculations were done my calculated age is 91 years old
then i went back and changed my hdl and ldl to abnormal levels like
they use to be before i took medication and changed my diet and
increased my exercise
luckily for me i hope is that i did this 25 years ago
hopefully that will help me live longer

went back and changed my cholesterol levels to where they use to
be and some of the history of what i use to do with diet and exercise
and the calculation lost several years of life expectancy

was feeling good about all this until i realized that os i probably
have alzheimers disease which is going to mess up all the work
i have been doing to take care of my health over the years
alzheimers disease will probably shorten that life span by
15-20 years

maybe i should have just enjoyed those jalapeno cheeseburgers
with extra cheese and dripping greasy fries and said the heck
with it

(my medical school friend im sure remembers eating those at lunch
time when we rotated at the va hospital)

then realized that maintaining your weight to normal, getting
exercise, eating properly, controlling your blood pressure,
controlling your cholesterol levels, avoiding excessive stress,
getting adequate sleep, not smoking, moderation of alcohol
intake, etc may turn out to be a way to delay or slow down
the onset of alzhiemers and possibly prevent some causes of it

also doing these things may also slow down the progression of
the disease once you do get it

so maybe all that work over 20+ years may help after all
if not then ......

RAIN
ok now they did a rain tease on us here
we were looking at 30-40% rain for labor day weekend
now they threw in only 10% rain for this weekend
they sure know how to make a dry thirsty area feel bad
dont they
bet they threw that in just to make us not feel so bad

looks like hurricane katia is following irenes path
and  a new tropical storm may be headed into the gulf
or are they just teasing us with that one too

my nephew he the one who did not fall into my rainwater
tank going after the limestone rock i accidentally dropped
in there is coming back soon to work on another movie
in this area

(the one he worked on before bernie should be out this fall)

last time he was here we got torrential rains that dumped
10 inches of rain at one point at our house

maybe him coming this fall will be better than a rain dance
or seeding the clouds

have emptied that tank so maybe i can talk him into climbing
down there and getting that large rock out of there
at least he wont get wet doing it

HURRICANE COMING
could this be our relief from all this heat
this is a tropical wave that is drifting our way very gradually
hope the big high thats over us doesnt push it away from us

POOR WILLIE
willie nelson got busted for having 6 ounces of marijuana by a
border agent in el paso texas
originally the judge was going to just have him sing to them in
court and she would let him off
apparently that was unacceptable so the prosecutor decided a
$500 fine would be levied if he would plea guilty

now another judge decided said you cant do that and willie
has to be tried with the misdemeanor marijuana possession which
can carry up to a year in prison
now that would look bad wouldnt if willie locked up for a year

he just needs to go to california or colorado and go to a marijuana
clinic and get a prescription for marijuana to use for his chronic
wrist tendonitis
maybe that will keep him out of trouble

breast cancer survivor, mammogram recommendations

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR
my wife she was listening to npr radio one day and
heard an interview of the texas poet laureate
she was talking about her year-2010- as the texas poet laureate
where she wanted to go into schools and work with
the kids on writing about their communities and towns

my wife she called her and invited her to come to her school
and work with her kids in her writing classses
she accepted the invitation

she spent the evening with us and stayed at our
place which we call the country n
her story was interesting and she was entertaining to visit with

she spent all day with the kids at my wife shes school
both the kids and her enjoyed it

the texas poet laureates name is karla k morton
she is a breast cancer survivor since 2008
she tired to find books etc to help her through this
crisis     she couldnt find the ones that worked for her so

she wrote a book of poems as she progressed through the diagnosis
chemotherapy surgery radiation treatment and  pet scans
this helped her get through this difficult time
she had long flowing straight hair that fell out  during the time she
wrote the book of poems

she gave us copies of her book      keep them in my exam room for patients
to read

MAMMOGRAM/BREAST CARE RECOMMENDATIONS
the different medical organizations cant seem to agree on when and
how often to do breast care and mammograms
until there is a consensus then

recommend in my practice to

do monthly self breast exam
do annual breast exam by medical provider
do annual mammogram starting at 40 years old
do at 35 years old if patient wants it

any suggestions on how to get it out?

FINDING A FAMILY PHYSICIAN
my librarian niece she was looking to find a general practitioner
a general practitioner is some one who did not finish a residency program
and is not board certified

my niece she wants to find a family physician  a family medicine doctor
or a family practice doctor

have talked to a  lot of patients about the process they used

my niece she should look in her insurance companies list of family
physicians and find those in a convenient location for her
the insurance company will also do a rating of the family physician but there
will be no bad ratings on that list
dont just stop there though!

if they are on the list they are board certified (finished a 3 year residency program
and passed a national exam and  recertifies every 7 years as well as does
at least 50 hours of continuing medical education each year  as well as does
15 hours of family medicine board required testing each year)

my niece she should then use that list and ask family, friends and coworkers for
recommendations from that list
my niece she then should use the internet to evaluate those names that she has
remembering that any one can post things on these web sites
but will get a general feel for the physician

my wife she sees a specialist that she really likes a lot
if your check the websites on the specialist she has a lot of high ratings
and also has a lot of low ratings
refer a lot of patients to the specialist but know not to send her
patients that are non compliant as they are the ones that get mad

my niece she should also check the states medical board web site to see if
there has been a problem with the physician in the past

my niece she should then have a good idea of whether the physician on her list
is someone she wants to see

some patients like to see a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant
a nurse practitioner has a bachelors degree in nursing and has then done
a two or  three year training program
a physician assistant has a bachelors degree and has done a three year training program

when evaluating them need to also check out their supervising physician as you
may have to see the supervising physician occasionally

my niece she should not transfer a lot of records to the new physician
but should do a one page summary of her medical history to include what
reason she is in for  significant medical problems  surgical history
medications both prescription and over the counter      allergies
and a list of specialist she sees and why
usually on first visit patients will  fill out a medical history form

my couch5k niece got more inspiration when she read about a 92 year old
lady that just finished a 5k race

my niece she mentioned in my blog yesterday is prepping for a 5 k run 

my niece she is prepping for the 5 k using an iphone app called couch to 5k

my niece she is starting on week 3 of her 9 week program

running walking bicycling exercising is one the best things to improve 

both your physical and mental well being

my nephew he is working as an intern on a movie set(will tell more about it when

my nephew he is sensitive to mosquito bites

my nephew he took too much benadryl one night and overslept for work 

my nephew he got a text from me about taking otc generic loratidine or cetirizine 

to control his itching from the bites      dont make him quite as sleepy 

as benadryl 

my nephew he texted me back telling me he loved me

nice to know that but 

my nephew he then texted me 'oh shoot that was to go to my mom'

my nephew he was visiting us this weekend 

told him he owed me one 

so......

am relocating some of  my rain water collection tanks 

needed to pump water from one to the other

placed a large limestone rock on lid of tank to hold pump line in place

oops knocked off pump line and the rock fell down into my tank

needed someway or somebody to go get it 

so......

my nephew he was talked into climbing up on a ladder and

let me hold his feet while i let him down into the tank(its 9 ft high)

my nephew said theres a lot of water in there(was only 4 feet of water)
