WILLIE MAY BE SAFE
in the theory of how alzheimers disease develops in the brain
beta amyloid accumulates in the brain and this accumulation
and its residual damage it causes is the cause of this disease

the brain has a blood brain barrier that protects the brain
eg certain drugs and chemicals and hormones cant get through
this barrier to affect the brain

it also works against the brain sometimes
eg
as this beta amyloid accumulates it cant be transported back through
this blood brain barrier so the body can dispose of it
so it just starts accumulating
then alzheimers disease develops


now this is where willie nelson comes in
you notice how old he looks
well he is old hes 80
and he seems sharp to me when he is interviewed
maybe a little laid back

but he is known for smoking the weed on a regular basis
real regular basis
and this may be protecting him from the devastating disease
alzheimers disease

it seems that marijuana may help the body clear this bad beta
amyloid from the brain by helping transport this beta amyloid
back across the blood brain barrier allowing this disposal of
this beta amyloid
thus it may delay the onset of the disease
and possibly actually prevent the disease

of course
these studies right now are all animal studies
excuse me how easy would it be to study humans
theres plenty of weed around
theres im sure plenty of volunteers
heck i would be first in line if it turned out to help

old willie, scans

OLD WILLIE

old willie will be 80 years old today 

according to him 

but according to states records its april 30

of course

i think he should change his birthday to 

4/20

if you dont understand why 4/20 and what it means

just ask you kids or your grandkids

my guess is they know what that means

willie played last night at the backyard in the austin area

im quite sure it was packed

and there probably was a strange odor in the air

and im sure austin kept the concert weird

i do admit when i see willie he looks 80 years old

all that rough living hes done

well he actually looks 100 years old

but

he still has that distinctive voice

and his old guitar

ive seen him play live twice

once in little rock at a concert at barton coliseum

a lot of drunk people

but it was interesting that the people in the crowd were

a mixture of all ages and sizes and looks

obvious red neck country people with dressed up city folks

with a lot of hippie looking people

all enjoying his music

thanks to my medical school friend for introducing us to

willie and his music

ive been hooked since

then

we took my motherinlaw to a fourth of july picnic in 

ft worth texas

it was hotter n hell

the place was packed all day as tons of other musicians played

then willie showed up when it was cooler in the evening

and everyone didnt seem to mind the wait

yes a lot were drunk and 4/20ed

my motherinlaw endured that hot sun and long day 

but it was worth it 

she sure loves willie

when willie finally leaves us one day which i hope is 

a long time away

there will never ever be another one

SCANS

friday i went to dallas and had 

a mri scan of the brain as part of the adni study that im in 

typical mri scan 

louder than hell 

be still for over an hour

stuck up in that cylinder 

keep your eyes open for the next 7 minutes

you ever tried that before without blinking

sorry i blinked couldnt help

why dont you try it and see if you can do it

looked at my old mri scan report

and oops there were some white matter hyperintensities (wmh)

areas on my scan

had forgot about those

since the scan more has been written about these

they are found commonly in elderly patients 

but im not elderly

if you have an increased number of these they can be associated with 

an increased risk for developing dementia alzheimers and stroke 

and 

are found in patients with high blood pressure obesity diabetics high cholesterol

this is why its important to keep these things under good tight control 

over a life time

i only have one or two which are not significant

hopefully all im doing to control things with my health 

living right eating right exercising controlling my cholesterol and blood pressure

and maintaining a normal weight will keep those wmh where they are now

then i had a glucose metabolism pet scan of the brain 

got an iv infusion of labelled glucose 

when i got home that night my wife she said you sure taste sweet 

when she kissed me

in alzheimers patients since they cant use the glucose in the damaged 

brain cells there is no uptake of the labelled glucose

and it will show up as blank areas on the scan 

my last glucose metabolism pet scan of brain was normal

HURRICANE COMING
could this be our relief from all this heat
this is a tropical wave that is drifting our way very gradually
hope the big high thats over us doesnt push it away from us

POOR WILLIE
willie nelson got busted for having 6 ounces of marijuana by a
border agent in el paso texas
originally the judge was going to just have him sing to them in
court and she would let him off
apparently that was unacceptable so the prosecutor decided a
$500 fine would be levied if he would plea guilty

now another judge decided said you cant do that and willie
has to be tried with the misdemeanor marijuana possession which
can carry up to a year in prison
now that would look bad wouldnt if willie locked up for a year

he just needs to go to california or colorado and go to a marijuana
clinic and get a prescription for marijuana to use for his chronic
wrist tendonitis
maybe that will keep him out of trouble

MY NEPHEW HE AND THE ROCK

my water level is low in my tanks so i pumped all the water
out of the tank with the rock
my nephew he may be coming in august to visit so ill leave
this tank empty until he gets here so he can go down in

SAVING ELECTRICITY

most of the energy used to wash clothes is heating the
water so the solution is to wash with cold water
we do this out our house by washing and rinsing in cold water
of course we use rain water to wash our clothes

washing your clothes in hot water instead of cold water uses
as much electricity as leaving your refrigerator door open for
a year
now that puts this in terms where we understand the importance
of using cold water

also hot water shrinks, fades your clothes and they wont last as long

use a front loading washer as it uses 2/3 less water than a top loader
we switched to one of these a few years ago
as we are on rainwater for our water system we want to conserve
as much water as possible

or to be truly green get one of those things in the picture at the
top of this blog

total electric power used each year for drying our clothes at
the country n is zero
they smell fresh
if done right dont need ironing
you get to get outside twice with each load
if you hang them out just before a rain they get rinsed again and
they feel even better when you put the clothes on

one draw back can be if you have a dog that likes
flapping clothes
we had one hes not at our place anymore who loved to go
after those big towels
flap flap flap he couldnt resist them

total investment needed to save over $300 a year is the price
of a clothesline

know what a great place it is to watch movies
foods good theres plenty of room can have a beer or glass of
wine with your meal

they tolerate no talking during the movie and no cell phones
going off

well willie got off again with a misdemeanor mj possession
seems like he had less than 2 oz in his buses possession
guess they may have lost some in the evidence room
no way did he have only that much

he just needs to get that mj rx from his doctor so theyll
leave him along
