they should be ashamed

THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED

these states above in that dark reddish orange color
should be ashamed
note that the district of columbia is shaded that color
which means
in our national capital there is one of the highest hunger problems among
the elderly

shame shame on all our congresspersons for allowing
this to happen
shame shame on those four states that have allowed
this to happen

now in the new budget there are plans to cut federal funding
for block grants which are used to help fund
meals on wheels programs
it takes somewhere between $1500-$2500 to feed an elderly
person for a year

cutting these funds will cost some folks from being cut from
the program

its just mean spirited

now a relative runs a program in one of those states
a real good program
that provides food to a lot of people every day
luckily some of it is privately funded
but
the federal funds contribute a lot to her successful program

i having being delivering these meals on wheels for 6 years
i really think some that i deliver to would become malnourished
maybe starve to death

most of them
split the meal in half like my mother use to do
eat half for lunch and half for supper
without these meals they might not eat at night
or
eat out of a can
or
not even eat at all

its just mean spirited
its embarrassing

for me its embarrassing to live in a state that allows old folks
to go hungry

if you live in one of those dark colored states above
you should be embarrassed too

if you live in the district of columbia
well
thats you congress and the president
you should should be real embarrassed
real ashamed
disgustingly ashamed

again
dont let them do this to our grandparents generation
oops i mean our generation

alzheimers news-dont defund us now

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-DONT DEFUND US NOW
Image result for organicgreendoctor
thats what i would say to our congress
not now
please
we are on the brink of finding a cure and or treatment
dont stop us in our tracks

much of the basic research that leads to discoveries
that can eventually lead to cures or treatments
for alzheimers and other diseases
starts with the nih and federal funding for this basic research
its where it starts
but
it doesnt ever start without money

let me digress a second
when i retired i became involved in two volunteer areas
meals on wheels
alzheimers
Picture
i have been doing meals on wheels now for 6 years
some of the folks i have delivered to those 6 years
without meals on wheels i think some of those folks
would have starved to death
yes
starved to death here in the united states
here in texas
here in central texas

we cant let this happen
defunding meals on wheels

yes over the last few years several of the folks who were
receiving meals on wheels had alzheimers disease
starving them is not a way to treat the disease
it does get them off the pay roll though
is this a new way to do the death panels

dont let them defund meals on wheels
some things the federal and state government should fund
this is one of them

i certainly would prefer my tax money go to the meals for those
older folks than go to some new canon or boat or ship

Alzheimer's Word Cloud
when i was at the alzheimers research center for my last visit
aside here
i should start my infusions next week
when i was there
there was great concern for the loss of research money for the
alzheimers disease center
some of their research is on the brink
between scientific research and medical research and treatment

back when the nih was cut severely in the mid 2000-2005
there was new research that was promising for cancer treatment
when it lost funding it was shelved for 10 years
then
when the funding came back 10 years later
it now is being used to cure i said cure people of leukemias and other
cancers
10 years too late for many

there is so much alzheimers research ongoing now
some could be the answer to ending alzheimers disease
or adequately treating it
it may and probably will be shut down or possibly discarded

there are 5 million folks with alzheimers disease in the us
in a few decades that number will shoot up to 50 million
that
folks
is when our health care system will be totally overwhelmed

we cant afford not to find a treatment or cure for this disease

we are treading on serious ground if all these cuts come through

why dont you call
give your congress person a good talking to

alzheimers disease like elderly hunger
it dont care what your political party is or your race or your religion
right now
its winning big time

its in our hands to do something
the voter

the intern

the INTERN
having been rained in for several days
having seen too much rio olympics
seeing all those stories about swimmers urinating in
a gas station
why not just save that for the swimming pool guys
having not enough football yet to watch
i said to my wife she
lets find a movie on tv
so on hbo
there was the movie the intern with robert deniro and anne hathaway
Image result for the intern movie
as i watched this
as many of you who have retired
as i did too early 5 years ago
you recognize that lost look
that
what am i going to do now
you can only clean the house
mow the yard
paint
read the paper
organize your papers
all those other things that need to be done
then
what next you ask

thats when
your life can either get better for everyone
or
you become stagnant

i chose like robert deniro did
to not to become stagnant
look at
you need to see the movie
the good
how much he made those around him
better
and
happier

there are a lot of retired folks who have a lot to offer
their numbers keep growing and growing each year
why dont we
schools government charities businesses
do a better job of taping into this source of knowledge and manpower
some of its free ie they just volunteer

thats what i did
i always wanted to help build a house with habitat for humanity
so
i showed up one day and started volunteering once or twice a week
i am on somewhere between 10-15 houses that i have helped with
most i have supervised and planned the landscape
with sometimes little funds

i would do it again

then
my mom got free meals
so
i volunteered for meals of wheels delivering once a week
on a 28 mile route spread out from the kitchen site
to close to where the country n is located

i have befriended several of the clients
helping one find the right medicare rx plan and saved him a
couple of thousand on his drug bills each year
i also helped with making sure his last will was handled like
he wanted along with other dedicated volunteers

i even planted a tomato for a 94 year old client in a movable
pot so she could grow fresh tomatoes
a proud possession is that tomato for her

i recently cut down a fallen tree off another clients wheelchair ramp

things i wouldnt have got to do if i hadnt decided to get involved
with meals on wheels
the clients life was made a little better by my decision
i feel good inside for doing it

i got involved with the alzheimers movement
doing alzheimers walks to raise funds
i having personally raised several thousands for the movement over
the last 5 years
i like doing alzheimers talks answering those questions about the disease
that people always want answers for but cannot get them
i am involved with alzheimers research as a volunteer subject
ive been stuck with needles in the arm and the back multiple times
endured numerous memory tests
hoping to do my part to find an answer for this disease
at the same time somehow making my memory better

wait
maybe it was because i chose like robert did
not to stay home and go stagnant
but
to get involved

so
if your are retired or if you just have some free time
you need to get involved
maybe
become an intern

busy as a bee

BUSY AS A BEE
thats what i am right now
as busy as can be

i am doing a seminar next week
one hour on
the different major dementias
which i have learned a lot from preparing for this talk
then
one hour on
research in alzheimers disease
that one i dont have to do much research on
since i live that one

then in two weeks i will be doing a seminar with a
caregiver whose husband has alzheimers
shess living what she will be talking about
caregiving
ours will be a question and answer seminar after lunch
here is the link to the day long seminar
its filling up fast

then i take a break from doing my presentations
but if asked i will do one
i like the q and a ones where folks ask the questions they
want answers for

then im involved in 3 walk to end alzheimers in central texas
bell county wtea, williamson county wtea, and travis county wtea

i have a team in the first two walks the organicgreendoctor team

donate or join at this link

bell county 11/1/14

williamson county 9/27/14

look at our online silent auction which closes on september 21, 2014
at
www.32auctions.com/ogd

bid on
-my organic squarefoot garden that i will build and plant for you
-one or both beautiful quilts by my plastic surgeon friend
-$100 gift certificate to the monument cafe group in georgetown
all have been bidded on
500 folks have reviewed it so far
the bidding should pick up as we near the closing date

then my wife she and i walk with austin regional clinics team
in the travis county walk on 10/12/14 since they are one of the
sponsors of that walk

my wife she and i will also be walking in the little rock arkansas
walk to end alzheimers 11/8/14 on my brothers team #joe nash

all the walks are in honor personally
of my mother father and my younger brother joe
all of whom had this terrible disease

i sit on each of the local committees which have been meeting since
april planning all these walks

so i put a lot of time and effort into the alzheimers associations walks
since they are the major fundraiser for the alzheimers association
they are helping find a treatment and cure for this disease

i also threw down the purple challenge last week which has generated
quite a few donations from around the country and several folks
signing up for their walks locally

the purple challenge can be seen here
basically
-you agree to wear a purple shirt for a day and
post a picture on facebook etc of yourself in said shirt
-donate or join a local walk at www.alz.org/walk
-then personally challenge 3 people to do the same
keep it going please

then i work at williamson county habitat to humanity
once or twice a week doing whatever is needed eg
last week we painted the doors and frames inside the house
and we cleared trash and brush that had accumulated on
the property

you can help fund the landscaping i do by going to this link
http://www.gofundme.com/bxgjts
landscaping starts next saturday

more next week on habitat for humanity

then of course every friday am come rain or shine
mostly shine around here
i deliver meals on wheels over a 20 mile route
its a humbling experience sometimes knowing we let
our elderly live like this
sad is what it is

then finally i do my honeydoes househusband chores

so just call me buzz bobby the bee

the way to do it

THE WAY TO DO IT

the last two years i have volunteered at habitat for humanity
in the area where i live
over the last two plus years i have learned a lot about building
carpentry painting caulking roofing framing flooring etc
some i have applied to the country n when i do projects here
now i even know now what the right tools are to use for a project

i also about a year ago took over the landscaping for the houses
the goal is to landscape
xerically
plant only native plants sometimes i have to redirect the owners some
decrease the need for water a big issue here as we are all
low on water in this area
and
make it look good when its all done

so ive learned a lot over these few months
ive given back a lot as i volunteer

i also know how habitat works
they dont just give these folks these houses
they earn them
and
they pay for them over 20 years

you and i and the many sponsors and many volunteers provide
most of the construction costs for the house
except for certain contractors all the labor is donated
many contractors even do their work at a reduced cost
or for no cost at all

the homeowner
has to work 500 hours on the house or other houses or in the
habitat stores
has to qualify for the house
has to attend financial classes
has to attend home care classes
is followed for several months by an assigned mentor

so its not all given to them
they earn and pay for most of it

the benefit thanks to those who donate money and time
get the house for about half price
at 0% interest for 20 years
the day they move in their equity doubles
they gain some self esteem

so as i thought about this
i was thinking
what if many of our government programs where we give
money to folks
require within reason that they give something back

eg
i am now on social security disability for mild short term memory loss
granted of course the disability nsurance paid a lawyer to get me on that
its costing me taxes on that money i didnt have to pay before

require that in order to continue for me to get social security disability
that i do something in return for society to continue to get that money
like
volunteer at habitat
volunteer at meals on wheels
volunteer with a nonprofit like the alzheimers assoication
keep the roads along a stretch of highway clean
help some senior mow their yard
etc etc etc

of course this needs to all be done with compassion in mind
a wheelchair bound stroke victim with severe dementia
would not be able to do much
but
most folks could

think what good this would do for those in need
for our society
and
maybe most important for the self esteem of those who
like me are receiving our tax dollars every month

nah
that might make sense to do all of that

meals night

MEALS NIGHT
foir those of us who are sports fans we are lucky
here in the austin area as we have
3 minor league teams here that play at the highest
level of the minor leagues

when you go to one of the games you may be seeing a player
who will be in the major leagues that year or the next
or youll see a major league player who is playing down
so that they can rehab a sports injury

we have the round rock express the triple a team of the mlb rangers
the texas stars the minor league team for the nhl dallas stars hockey team
then
we have the austin toros the minor league team for the
nba san antonio spurs

the austin toros are the team in the nba d league
most of the players if they make it to the nba
will play for the spurs
some will be picked up by other teams later

so the quality of play is just below the nba level

our political leaders on both sides
they are both responsible since the cuts for funding for the
meals on wheels programs  was
voted on by both parties

why they would cut funding for a program that feeds the
poor elderly folks in our area
i dont know
wonder if they have trouble sleeping at night

if you see them campaigning bring this up

when i deliver meals on wheels to folks on my route
i am probably the only one that day who will see them
and
the meal we deliver to them is the only one they will get
that day
many split it in half and eat half at lunch and the other
half in the evening

money well spent

now the meals on wheels is having to find monies wherever
they can
to prevent decreasing the numbers of meals they deliver more
than they already do

in the county we serve there is a long waiting list of folks to get on
the meals on wheels

on friday march 7 at 730pm
it will be meals on wheels night at the austin toros game
at the cedar park center in cedar park texas

you can go here to this link to buy discounted tickets for that night
50% of the proceeds go back to the meals on wheels program
one of the cheapest ticket will produce enough for a meal for someone

there will also be a silent auction that night
there will be multiple items for auction
several gift certificates to area restaurants
one is to one of my wife shes favorite one
we will bid that one up for sure
there are sporting tickets to multiple venues like the
round rock express university of texas longhorns austin toros

oh yea the longhorns are our other professional team

come out and join us that night
place a bid on an item
just if you see my name dont overbid me please

johnnys the guy, hog man, freeze, meals

JOHNNYS THE GUY

well all those aggies are sure happy after this week
they and i thought this would be a bad year in the sec
he fooled them didnt he
and fooled us

johnny football
johnny heisman
johnny manziel
watched him accept the heisman trophy on saturday night
he along with the other two guys seemed to all three
be classy guys
not what you expect from college football players sometimes

makes you have some hope for the future for that generation
with kids like that representing them

HOG MAN

new football coach bret beilema seems to be the right guy
for this program
heck its a sign
his destiny
since he grew up on a hog farm  and use to have to call
the hogs every day
just seems the right fix
destiny if you will

hell bring a new no nonsense attitude to this team and some
stability they need

he plays smash mouth football and good defense
lets see who else does that
oh yeah bama

FREEZE
its going to freeze tonight
here at the country n it may be in the low 20s
what a shocker for us and those plants and my garden
it was in the 80s and shorts weather yesterday
now its going to be tundra weather for a day or two

be sure and protect your plants
cover them with blankets or row cover
water them all well today
check your pipes and water lines to make sure they are all
protected
here at the country n we will be dripping our faucets tonight to
keep the lines from freezing
and
getting that wood burning stove fired up to keep our place warm

dont forget your pets if they stay outside
they need extra protection from the cold

MEALS

one day a week i deliver meals on wheels to people
near where i live
there are only 7 people on the route but they are scattered
over a 20+ mile route
it takes about 1 1/2 hour to deliver the meals to these needy folks
i enjoy it
some of the folks only see one person that day and thats me so
i try to spend a few seconds with them when i deliver the meals

they are in great need of people to deliver this route
other routes are ran by regular volunteers
some from church groups some from home school groups
some who like me just want to volunteer and some moms and
their preschool kids
im sure the older folks enjoy seeing the kids
some deliver once a month some twice a month
and some like me once a week

if you have a group like this or if you are an individual and would
like to help
to run this route that runs from north leander to north of liberty hill
please call
denise at the williamson county meals on wheels program in leander
at 512-259-0288

they need our help
