welcome to the organic green doctor blog

i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living
i will blog on these plus other things noted to be interesting

one plus two is five

ONE PLUS TWO IS FIVE
Image result for mind diet
most folks do new years resolutions
probably most say im going to eat better

so to help
the us news and world report got together a panel
of nutritionists and doctors and dietary consultants
to rank the diets

here is the link
to the top diets
on this link you can click on a particular diet
to read more about it

number one and number two were tied
the mediterranean diet is good for the heart
the dash diet is good for blood pressure

if you take the mediterranean diet and the dash diet
and merge them together
you get the mind diet
which seems to slow memory decline

seems odd that it is not tied for first
since its a combo of both the top ones

when you look at the top ones they are usually similar
fruits vegetables nuts berries some meat especially fish
some poultry and some allow limited red meat olive oil
red wine
like the mind diet does

way down at the bottom of the list is the popular
keto diet
its number 39th
last place it was

it induces ketosis which may be good on a short term basis
eg
waiting 12 hours between the evening meal and breakfast leads
to ketosis which is used by the brain as its energy source during this time
also if you eat 3 hours before bedtime the ketosis gets
started before you go to bed
but
the keto diet induces a continuous ketosis
if you know someone on it
just smell their breath
but be careful
itll knock you off your feet
its like smelling rotten acetone

when i look at the top 10 or so of these diets
they really are almost the same
chose one and you probably cant go wrong

the one that is ranked number three is the flexitarian diet
it lets you have some meat
catchy name

i skimmed down through them all

if i was going to chose one
i would chose the mind diet
since
it is good for the mind the brain
as well as the heart and your blood pressure

remember
whats good for the heart is good for the brain

for us it allows us
wait it doesnt control us

on this diet there is all the food we like to eat
even occasional meat
like fish chicken turkey some hamburger some steak

i dont  mind that one
for sure

the mind diet
should be number one

alzheimers news-its the oil

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-ITS THE OIL
Image result for organicgreendoctor
there are two diets recommended for slowing down alzheimers disease
and
it bodes well for folks trying to slow down or prevent
heart attacks and strokes
obesity

one is
the mediterranean diet
the other the mind diet
both are similar

the mind diet is really a blend of
the mediterranean diet
and
the dash diet for blood pressure

i like the mind diet
click on the link here to read about it

one ingredient it seems all recommend
is
extra virgin olive oil

extra virgin oil is well like fresh squeezed orange juice
it uses mechanically squeezed olives fresh ones to produce
the pure olive oil
the other olive oils are extracted using chemicals
thus
extra virgin oil is the better choice
its the one recommended

a recent study at temple university showed that in mice
who were fed evoo rich diet
thats extra virgin olive oil rich diet
that the autophage cell cells
those garbage cells in the brain
were activated by the extra virgin olive oil diet

these cells clean up debris inside the brain
plus
these mice had better memories and learning abilities than those
not fed the evoo rich diet
the evoo rich diet mice had better neuron connections than those
who didnt eat that diet

if this extrapolates to humans
which it probably does
which as far as i am concerned it does
then we all should be on this as our oil of choice

you may be smarter for it

this has been a sobering week for me
as i head back home where i grew up for our annual family reunion

i always it seems seem to come face to face with reality
as i visit
the grave of my younger brother who died at 62 with alzheimers disease
looking at his grave looking at old pictures seeing his progression
it makes it well sobering
thinking of what he and his family went through

i visited my mom and dads graves
thinking of both of them
thinking mainly of her and her final downward course with the disease

i visited with  my older brother diagnosed about 3 years ago
who is on aricept donepezil like i am
that was less sobering as he seems to have improved over time
well like i have over the last several years

as i am here
sandwiched between my second mri then early next week
my fifth infusion and final one at ut southwestern in dallas
before
my care then switches to ucla

yep
it all makes me
pause
take deep breaths
and
really realize how lucky i am and we are to be where we are with all this
not where we expected to be 7 years ago

remember
we need financial support to fight this disease
and
emotional support to deal with it

join us as we walk this year

mind for mind

MIND FOR MIND
a new study just came out
showing that a new treatment
well not a new treatment
could reduce the risk of alzheimers by
53%
yes thats
53%

it doesnt need to get approved by the fda
or
your prescription drug plan
or
your health insurance plan
or
medicare or champus

heck
you dont even need to get a prescription for it
or
even get it a a drug store

its really simple
you grow some of it yourself
all legal of course
or
buy it at a farmers market
or
a grocery store

this new treatment is called

the MIND DIET
Image result for mind diet
an acronym for
the mediterannean-dash intervention for neurogenerative delay
cute arent they
but
it does sort of stick with you

oh yes i am on the mind diet for my mind

the mind diet is a tweaking of the
mediterranean diet and the dash diet
in a simpler to follow form
the berry industry will love it

the dash diet was developed for folks to stop hypertension
and heart disease
it like the mediteranean diet also helps with dementia

remember
what is good for the heart is good for the
brain or should we say
the mind

here simply put is the
MIND DIET

there are 10 brain healthy food groups
green leafy vegetables   other vegetables   nuts   beans   berries
whole grains   fish   poultry   olive oil and wine

there are 5 food groups that should be limited
red meats   butter and stick margarine   cheese   pastries and sweets
fried and fast foods

Image result for mind diet
that seems pretty easy and clear to me
they especially recommend blueberries and strawberries
note i have 40 strawberry plants in my garden now

here are the stats for reduction of the risk for alzheimers disease
mediterannean diet 54%
dash diet 39%
mind diet has 53%

however
if some one moderately follows
the mind diet the risk is reduced by
34%
the mediterannean diet the risk is not reduced much
the dash diet the risk is not reduced much

so even if you half ass follow this mind diet it helps a lot

so if you are a relative of my mind
siblings   cousins   nephews   nieces   sons   and their kids
you need to be on the mind diet

you are programmed im sorry to say
to have a much higher risk of getting alzheimers disease
than most people

if you mind your diet you can reduce that risk by 53%

as we well know in our family
that misery associated with the alzeimers disease effect weve seen
so far
and
that we are about to see in the future
is not a very pretty happy picture to look at

we all want a cure for this disease
this may be as close to a cure as we will get
for awhile

just do it

here is the link i promised to post for those at the q&a
session yesterday

pain is a gain

PAIN IS A GAIN
Image result for gout
webmd.com

one of the worst pains you can have is gout
in the big toe
it ranks with an acute gallbladder attack kidney stone
that big ole red swollen toe
that hurts real bad even if you just look at it

now
a recent study based on data from the uk
looked at a large group of folks
and
found that the incidence of alzheimers disease in
gout sufferers was a 27% less incidence of this disease in
gouty folks

apparently the elevated uric acid levels seen in gout
may have a protective effect in the brain

no pain no gain right

i have written many times here and its in the alzheimers
association recommendations
that we all get on the mediterranean diet
Image result for mediterranean diet
its not a complicated diet
its easily accessible to folks all over the world
fruits vegetables fish lean meat nut olive oil red wine

whats been found in alzheimers research is
that whats good for the heart is good for the brain

now its been shown that someone who eats a
mediterranean diet may have a 47% decrease incidence
of heart disease

sorry but theres no medicine that will do that
wonder what it would do for the brain
we would take half that per cent

Image result for beta amyloid plaques in alzheimer's disease
then
researchers looked at brains of young people  in their 20s who died
and
have found that in many there is already
the bad stuff amyloid accumulation occurring in the brain
so the disease process can start early
real early

i heard recently that they are already treating some young
people who have the gene for alzheimers disease
with the alzheimers vaccine in some studies

it seems to me that the baseline treatment for us all
no matter the age
is
diet

this helps of course in alzheimers disease
but so many other diseases could be slowed down or prevented
by this four letter word
diet

exercise
move a lot every day
walking like talking is cheap

so if you have gout
a bad thing may be a good thing

if you are young it could already be started in you

diet is part of the answer for alzheimers and other diseases

get moving
eat right
start early
if the toe hurts thats ok

produce bounty

PRODUCE BOUNTY
yesterday i went out to my garden to check on it
since we had been gone for 5 days to san francisco
it was hot there they all said
my wife she and i just smiled when we heard that
yall dont know jack
this weather feels so good
as i recall working in my yard at 900am with sweat pouring
out of every pore in my body
my shirt was soaked so it looked like i had just jumped
in the shower
even my floppy hat i wear was soaked to the bone
so
we enjoyed every hot day there and really enjoyed those days
and nights when it dipped lower into the upper 50s

so back to my garden
i strolled down there
the first thing you see when you walk up is these okra stalks that
are 8 ft high
they look like 10 ft like you could dunk a basketball on top of them

these are the red german peppers that we got from malcom becks
garden the guru of organic gardening in texas
he also started gardenville years ago

these okra are thicker in diameter and have more of a
rib to them
and
ive noticed are softer than the clemson spineless we have

we have a volunteer sweet 100s tomato that has wound its way
up the okra plant using it as a stalk

i then proceeded to pick things looking for veggies to grill
tomatoes lots of juliette small ones
basil
bell peppers
poblano peppers
egg plant
french beans

note the white stuff on the tomatoes is kaolin clay which is sprinkled
over my tomato plants
as the grasshoppers chop on the plants the clay clogs up their mouth parts
and they die
you can also use white flour

the rest of the garden has slowed down a lot
most of the tomatoes have shut down
they will soon be removed
the beans have appeared to have made their last crop
as well as the cucumbers
the empty beds are all growing blackeyed peas as a cover crop

the pea plants will eventually be cut off at the ground
leaving the roots in the soil
the stalks will be fed to the hungry country n chickens
who also yesterday got to enjoy those big ole okra sliced open
as well as several tomatoes that were grasshopper chewed on

we have the new fall tomatoes growing well under shade cloth
in about a month we will uncover them

so i gathered all the crops to make my veggies for the night
using only stuff grown in my garden
heres the ingredients
figs
potatoes red
onions
garlic
egg plant
bell pepper
poblano pepper
green beans
small tomatoes
topped with rosemary and basil
seasoned with olive oil crushed black pepper and sea salt
sips of red merlot wine

this folks is what a mediterranean diet is like
but ill call it the country n diet
home grown

habits can be good, A4 study we need help

HABITS CAN BE GOOD
i frequently give presentations on alzheimers disease
or question and answer ones which i like to do since
people can get their answers about this disease from someone
who is
a doctor and has treated alzheimers patients
a family member of parents who had the disease and a younger brother
a patient himself who may have the disease

one of the areas i always talk about in my presentation
and
an area i make sure i talk about in the q&a sessions
is
things to do to slow down or prevent the disease
so
im always on the lookout for articles on how to do this
that may add to my list

recently i found an article from abc news
on 5 healthy habits that can cut your risk of alzheimers disease

go organic
a lot of our vegetables come from foreign countries that have
not banned ddt
ddt breaks down to dde which has been found in alzheimers
patients at levels 4 times those found in persons without the disease
going organic means no dde

eat healthy
even if you start in your 50s and even if you have a genetic
predisposition to get alzheimers disease like i do
you can slow down the progression of the disease
or
even in some of you prevent the onset of the disease
by eating a healthy diet like the mediterranean diet
fruits berries veggies nuts milk products lean meats fish olive oil red wine
in moderation of course
and
by maintaining a normal body weight

the risk can be decreased by as much as 90% according to recent
research by eating healthy

speak another language
and you can delay alzheimers by 4 1/2 years
speaking that extra language develops parts of the brain that
handles executive functions and attention tasks

sleep right and read
sleeping greater than 8 hrs or less than 6 hrs plus not reading
increasing the risk for cognitive impairment by 2.6 times
in a recent study
thank goodness for my naps each day so i can stay in that sweet
spot between 6-8 hrs sleep and i read every day

feed your hippocampus
thats where alzheimers disease starts
by atrophying that underneath area of the brain

those folks who had a genetic predisposition to alzheimers
if you are kin to me thats you
had a 3% drop in the size of that area over an 18 month time period
if they did not exercise
adding exercise those who were susceptible maintained the
volume of the hippocampus ie it did not shrink

if you do ancestry.com and get a dna hit to me
i highly recommend that you do the exercise every day
as well those other things above
and
all those other things we recommend

the trifecta of controlling your blood pressure cholesterol and diabetes
controlling stress anxiety depression
being happy
being socially active
listening to music
dont smoke

so yes there is something you can do to slow this down
most of it doesnt involve medication or special treatments

A4 STUDY-WE NEED HELP!!!

antiamyloid treatemt in asymptomatic alzheimers study
they are looking for

people age 65-85 years old
who have normal thinking and memory

patients will have the new amyvid pet scan i have written about
so many times
it identifies those who have that beta amyloid in the brain
patients with alzheimers disease have beta amyloid in the brain

for those with postive scans  some will be given an infusion of a
new alzheimers vaccine
that will hopefully bind to the accumulated beta amyloid
and remove it from the brain
and hopefully remove it also before it can get stuck in the brain

if this all works then you wont get alzheimers disease or if you do
it will be much milder

folks i would jump at this in a minute as its right now my only hope
to slow things down beside those healthy things i mentioned above
i would be first on the list
except im too young to qualify

what if i told you
you can have a test that may show you may have alzheimers disease
but you could take this new drug that may make it go away
would you do it
no doubt i would

and i know that its really about helping your kids and your grandkids
your nephews your nieces
im afraid to say but it appears that once you get  alzheimers disease
and have symptoms then this stuff may not work as well

take to the time to go to these two links
look for your state
and consider joining the study

researchers have to sort through a lot of volunteers to find those
at risk
they desperately need volunteers!!!

so dont give me this crap about you dont want to know
were talking about your kids their kids and future generations
being able to be treated for this disease years before it hits them

just think of your family member or friend who has or has had
this terrible disease
what if you could have prevented it from happening to them

it can only happen right now if you folks help us out in finding a cure

a4 study
and
a4 study now is the time

to read more about it and to find one near you
they need more volunteers

please pass this information on to those who might qualify
