STORIES AROSE FROM WALKING

several stories arose from our team at this years
walk to end alzheimers

these stories are the reasons we are all walking
to end alzheimers

all of these stories are from people who are associated some
way with the clinic i was associated with in austin
austin regional clinic

if you read this blog much you know my story
my mom died in the final stages of alzheimers
it sucked away her personality and was devastating to us
to watch its progression
my dad luckily i guess died of a heart attack before his
alzheimers advanced (he was not diagnosed officially but
i think looking back that he had it)
then my younger brother is progressing now with alzheimers
its sad to watch this happen to him and his family

then i may have it also
time when tell but all tests point to that as my diagnosis
wish i could somehow spare my friends and family all this
whats coming

one of the nurses mother has a rare cancer that requires treatment
out of state
she has had to deal with all this then this year her dad was
diagnosed with alzheimers disease
what a double whammy to have happen to your family at the same
time
thats why shes walking

another employee my right hand helper with our team and our
involvement with the walk her mom recently died after a lengthy
battle with alzheimers disease
this was my friend mr bs grandmother
she had to deal with all this from a distance of hundreds of miles
requiring frequent trips back to the northeast
her sister decided to stay home with her mom
and care for her throughout the final stages of this disease
her sister learned a lot from caring for her mom and realized
there was a great need for companies to provide good home
care for alzheimers patients and started her own company that
does for clients what she did for her mom
jos angels named in honor of her mom is the name of the company

one of the doctors from our clinic walked with us this year
he was affected directly by alzheimers disease
you see his uncle raised him
supported him through school college and medical school
and now his uncle is not around as
alzheimers stole him away

then little michael who gave me the letter last year that made me
cry and who gave me one of the pillows he made and sold to
raise money for alzheimers
this year he and his younger brother and sister sold lemonade to
raise money for alzheimers
he raised over $500 this year
hes only 7 years old
his mom started working  for the clinic in high school and used
this job to support her way through nursing school
her mother in law michaels grandma works for a local long term
care home thats provides a home for alzheimers patients

this year i gave him one of my dr duck hats we wore in the walk

then the final story is josh who sang the national anthem
for the walk
he made all of us cry listening to him sing
his mom works for the clinic and has had relatives
with the disease
she started there in high school and is working there still
thanks for letting josh sing for us
what an inspiration he is

these are just some of the stories from our team
there were more and more of them from the other teams
some very heart wrenching stories

i personally want to thank austin regional clinic for being a
sponsor of this walk this year and for letting its employees be
involved in the fundraising

we have over 50 team members
we had over 75+ donors this year
we raised $4800 and raised another $2500 in sponsorship money
the austin area walks will raise $250,000+ for the alzheimers association
this money will be used to fund research for education about the disease
and for caretaker resources

FOLLOW UP WALK TO END ALZHEIMERS

this weekend mr b (my walking buddy from last
year and my rainwater buddy) and i and 28 other of our team
members didnt get to do the 3 mile walk
around the beautiful san gabriel park along
the san gabriel river but we did all get to join
together inside the recreational gym
to honor those close to us
that are affected or were affected by this
terrible disease

mr bs grandmother died recently in the final
stages of the disease
my mother my father had the disease
my younger brother has the disease now and
is in long term care
and if you are a regular reader of this blog you know
that i might have the disease

many in our group were affected as their uncle aunt
grand parent sibling or parents had the disease

we all came together to remember and honor each
of them

the clinic where i used to work got together to design
these shirts and hats for us to wear

i use to talk like donald duck to my kid patients and
they all called me dr duck
hence the i walk for dr duck tshirt and hat

since we couldnt walk as a group outside because of
the rain we did do some line dancing to simulate
the walk
thanks ac for showing me how to do it

one of the highlights was josh singing the national anthem
he is a 7th grader and is one of our team members who sings
regularly at school and church
there were a lot of tears in the large crowd that was there
when josh was singing
including myself

thanks josh great job

and little michael was there from last year
the one that gave me the pillow and letter
that made me cry last year
he raised over $500 for the walk to end alzheimers
much of it from his lemonade and cookie sales

yep michael mr b josh you guys are definitely the hope
for the future

it was nice to get together with my group and the other teams
to honor those affected by this disease and to help raise funds
for research and for education about this terrible disease

we had a successful fundraising this year with donations
from 72 donors
thanks to all of you who donated this year
and helped us make this a successful year

my wife she and i went ahead and walked after the ceremony was
over with despite the rain
just felt like we needed to do this to honor those affected

we will be walking in the austin walk on october 27
and the temple walk on november 3

this blog is about a friend of mine
mr b
hes an elementary student and a former patient of mine

i have tried to keep up with some of my former patients
with facebook and email and this blog its been made easier



theres michael from last year
his story was well documented in this blog titled
thanks michael the hope for the future
yes michael made me cry the day he gave me that letter



then there is abbie who is such an inspiration to a lot of
people
she lets nothing stand in her way
heres is the blog titled abbie

mr b came to most of my larry weekends we had here each
april for the employees and families of the clinic where
i use to work

mr b was fascinated by larry the rooster and all the
country n chickens
(these chicks are laying eggs now and are selling them for
donations for our
organicgreeendoctor.com walk to end alzheimers team)

he as well as the other kids liked to ride in the trailer
pulled behind my lawn tractor

he liked my rainwater systems and i think he got infected
with the rainwater virus also
he started with putting 5 gallon buckets and anything that would
collect water under the gutters
when his mom told me about it i donated an extra rainwater
collection barrel to the cause

he now tells me this ones full so when i took him on a
recent tour of my favorite organic garden center he really really
liked the big green 10000 gallon tank there












he told me he wants one like that in his yard
maybe where his trampoline is
maybe mom will get that for his birthday

he was also my walking buddy for the
walk to end alzheimers last year
he was walking for his grandmother who died
recently from this terrible disease

but the common feature of all of these kids are that they
are our hope for the future
mr b talked freely with me about green issues and how we
need to do more green things like collect rainwater save water
do solar and wind energy collection stop polluting the air
drive energy efficient cars
grow more vegetables
this is an elementary kid now
there are thousands of these kids out there now thinking
about our future and ways to solve our problems

sure hope some of them go into politics
maybe the politicians should be talking to these kids

MICHAEL
thanks to the warm response to the blog on michael
his story seemed to have touched a lot of people
that little guy reaching people across the us with his story
what a special kid he is

DUMPSTER DIVING
have you ever dumpster dove
well my wife she has more than once
one day shell get caught and make the news
told her if she gets caught to not call me as ill not get her out of jail

one of my sisterinlaws and my wife she likes to go thrift shopping
and antique grazing
they have been known to pass by a dumpster and climb into it
to get some special item that someone has thrown away
they just have to have it

what ive noticed is that it usually sits somewhere for a long time
then gets donated to goodwill or the salvation army
then they go back later and buy it
then redonate it
im sure thats what they do
it seems like it is

my wife she drew on that dumpster diving experience with my
sisterinlaw this weekend

my nephew who is staying here while working on a film crew near
austin says
auntie have you seen my retainer i wrapped in a paper towel
oops i knew what happen to it when i heard him say it

ive taken over some of the household duties recently since i retired
if its on a floor i pick it up and chunk it
remember well picking up that wad of paper and since ive had two
boys i knew not to look at it
have found a lot of month old hot dogs and apples and bananas
wrapped up in paper in their rooms

when i looked and felt that wad of paper i immediately chunked it in
the trash

this weekend the trash was needing to be removed from
our property
so we took it to a trash dumpster on saturday

on sunday is when he was looking for it

on monday morning real early before the trash men came to get the
trash from the dumpster (you know the ones that make that noise
at 5:00 in the morning) my wife skipped our morning walk and
went to get that trash bag

it was just at daylight
the bin was 6 foot high
never asked her how she got up there and into the bin to get her
trash bag
im sure she pulled from her dumpster diving experience in the past
she said the construction crew across the parking lot stopped and
watched her do her trick
no clapping or whistling was done

she made it but waited to open the bag when she got home
we dug down in the bag and there it was

well let him clean it
wonder if the home owners insurance would cover a lost retainer
my wet suitcase sisterinlaw-his mom-would never forgive me
if we hadnt found that thing

FOOTBALL
hogs beat the aggies
good comefrombehind win
or bad 2nd half for the aggies
they did it again

horns looked good
will find how good they are this weekend when they play
the sooners

cowboys will break your heart
come on man
how could you loose that game
must have watched aggies in jerrys house on saturday
lets do better this week

a good story out of michigan about a high school home coming
queen who kicked the winning field goal to beat a top ranked
team
you go girl

THANKS MICHAEL
this is a story about michael
hes a special person
hes 7 years old
he was my patient in the clinic where i worked
i was the only doctor he had ever had

he raised $390 and donated it to the walk to end alzheimers
he made small pillows and sold them to whoever would listen to his
story and buy them from him
he would stand outside stores with a box of them to sell
this is how he raised money this year
it wasnt his first time to do this

his grandmother works at a home that takes care of people with
early alzheimers
he told his grandmother he wanted her to hold a place in the home
for me

at a walk to end alzheirmers that my wife she and i did this
weekend

i will admit i got teary eyed when i read the letter and when he gave
me the pillow
