football pleasure

FOOTBALL PLEASURE
thats what i call it
football pleasure
being able to sit on my lounging comfortable couch

those who have been to the country n know what im
talking about
it holds at least three and maybe four full grown adults
completely lounged out
and
after big meals like on thanksgiving and christmas a
location to enjoy the games and a long afternoon nap

heck one of my brothers comes to visit just so he
can take over his spot for that afternoon snooze

this weekend on friday and saturday
i helped a local school put in their school garden using
concrete blocks to form the beds
it took a lot of work to set the blocks and get them
in place
heres one of my blocked out beds i worked on
well i worked on five of them

another row of bricks will be placed then
in layers in the bed
cardboard newspapers leaves grass clippings etc
will be added
then the rest will be filled with ladybug brand
hill country soil
then they will be ready to plant

after working doing this all weekend i was able to have my
football pleasure
saturday night football
and
sunday pregame and sunday all day football

of course the horns game was delayed and they changed
later to a channel i was not signed up for so i only saw
half the game
ok i fell asleep and woke up 2 hours later to find out
about the game delay
still it was football pleasure with that nap

then on sunday
setting up in my brothers spot
with my sunday newspaper
my note pad for landscaping
my blog schedule
my unread magazines
as i watch the games if it gets boring i start reading the paper
or doing paperwork
or doing a landscape plan which i have 3 im working on now
then
mix in with that some napping
and thanks to dvr
i never miss any of the game action now

thats what football pleasure day is like
usually a non productive day
we need these occasionally
like once a week

of course it was ruined somewhat by the last second
loss by the cowboys
that dez bryant what a talent he is
then
someone needs to slap him upside the head with his
helmet off
or kick him in the rear end
or send him to therapy
or maybe timeout
jason witten would be im sorry the last person in the world
i would get in their face and yell at

dear dez
jason whiiten on tv looks much bigger than you
he is tough as nails
heck he even played with a ruptured spleen
if i were you i would apologize to him
ok while you are at it apologize to the whole team
and to us too

my wife she lets me do this like on this weekend
because she was gone to the book festival all weekend
i cleaned the house well all week
i kept all dishes washed all week
i washed all the clothes all week
i cooked most of the meals
i do a lot of inside and outside honey dos like mowing
weed eating planting brush clearing wood cutting etc
so i do my chores and try to keep her happy all week
so i can have my football pleasure day

wait isnt that what some housewives do every week every month
for years
and they dont get football pleasure days

i never said life was fair did i

THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY
there was a lot of this going around here this weekend

the horns won
they just beat the heck out of the sooners
where oh where have they been all season
heres hoping they play like this the rest of the season
then mack can retire with some dignity
it is time you know

the hogs lost well they lost bad
theyve got a lot of ugly games to go
not a good season im afraid

thanks goodness the cowboys won
but they did lose two starters ware and murray

the ugly occurred as the texans fans cheered as
their quarterback lay on the ground injured
tasteless like the eagles fans
heck they booed santa claus one time

then we got a ton of rain around here
it flooded things in austin and the surrounding areas
of course we only got a 1/4 inch
thats the ugly
but
i did get to do a lot of ranch work here at the country n
before the rain started

the acl fest day two was canceled as the zilker park was
partially under water
some bands went to local venues and played anyway
good ole austin

then something happened and sewage got mixed in with
all that runoff
wonder where it goes and do you want to ski swim or
fish wherever it goes
dont think i would

all that rain still may not have happened enough on the watershed
of the lake travis and the other highland lakes that supply much
of the water around here
well see as the week progresses

in south austin a lady who was 6 months pregnant did not
heed that warning
dont drown just turn around
she had to be rescued
she couldnt get her windows down to get out
so someone came and broke her windows and pulled
her to safety

folks thats one of my fears is running into deep water
and not being able to lower my windows to climb out
so
in two of my vehicles i have the old type of roll down windows
this aint going to happen to me

then
you know im a big supporter of obamacare
so i was successful yesterday in opening up an account
and answering all those security questions
now which pet was that was my favorite
hope i can remember the answers

then
when i excitedly tried to go farther to complete the applications
it failed
granted on sunday am i couldnt get on my credit unions website
or my investment website either

hopefully i will be able to finish this up
since i have 2 more months to do it
just hope others not as motivated as i am dont give up

what a weekend, dont call me

WHAT A WEEKEND IT WAS
i have a rule watching sporting events
no matter the score
even if my team is losing
i always watch the whole game from
start to finish
unless of course i fall asleep
which is a frequent occurrence
but
with dvr im able to watch the ending
eventually

this weekend however i broke my rule
when i was watching the byu texas game
i watched as much as i could stand of the game
until the third quarter
then i couldnt stand it anymore
so
i turned it off
and the next day i even erased the dvr
i had made of the game

yes i broke the rule my long time rule
i couldnt stand to watch those horns not tackle someone

even i know after not playing football for nearly 50 years
you cant tackle a rugby player with just your arms
or a bum legged quarterback

how embarrassing that performance was

yes manny your head had to roll the next day
thats the way the game is played now

now
how do you learn how to tackle in 1 week
you dont

it my friends could be a long season for horn fans


thank goodness the cowboys won and looked good
doing it
so the weekend wasnt a total loss

hogs won but samford
4800 students
think a rice like school
i always think sanford and sons when i hear that name
only winning by a few points isnt a good sign either


wait isnt that the new arkansas a sign
johnny and aggies won and he i think kept his mouth shut
and his autographs to himself

lost and found, football

LOST AND FOUND
i wrote recently about losing my billfold
and all the hassles that went along with notifying
everyone that it was lost-banks credit card companies
social security health insurance flex account card
and drivers license folks just to name a few

had to get a new picture taken with my glasses off
since they are using facial recognition software
now at the department of public safety

got all that done
it took up a lot of time
then i kept a close watch on my credit cards bank accounts
credit agency listings
so far nothing had shown up

remember hours were spent taking care of this
some on hold with agencies listening to bad music

plus with a diagnosis like i have you start wondering
well has the time came when i start losing stuff
and cant find it

heck last week i couldnt find my keys for a day
i always hang them on a key rack we have inside
our kitchen
we both know thats where we hang our keys
nope they werent there

my wife she put them on top of my portable radio i
use when i work outside
at least thats what i tell people

then someone told me about the time they lost their keys
they found them later sitting on top of a coke can in
the refrigerator

these things just make you wonder though

well remember the duct tape chair that i blogged about that
im so proud of since
i was known also as the duct tape doctor

for thanksgiving this year
which by the way has now turned out to be the best
my wife she did a deep cleaning of the house
and yes that included cleaning up my duct tape chair

as she was cleaning out underneath
why she was under there i dont know
 she noticed a fringe of brown stuck up in the pipes
underneath the chair

yep there was my billfold
with all my important stuff in it
all unfolded hanging on those pipes

now how in the world did it get there
must have been that mouse that i saw run across
the room that time

rememberence, lost, romo gumbo

REMEMBERENCE

yesterday was veterans day
a day to remember those who have served in the military
especially those who lost their lives
these guys and gals are the ones that served to protect us
including protecting our right to vote last week

am thankful for the safe return of my nephew from his tour in
afghanistan
thankful for another nephew who served in the navy
thankful to my three brothers who served in the military
and retired after 20 years service
my rainwater brother my historian brother and my
older brother
thankful to my moms brother who served in the military
during world war 2
he was wounded while in the pacific war

thanks to my historian brother for reminding our family
members about our connection to this veterans day

LOST
my wife she and i go to lost maples state park
in the hill country just southwest of san antonio every year

if we catch the leaves just right
if the cold has hit some and
if the weather is just right
then the leaves on those maples can be as beautiful as
those you see in maine and vermont

see they are the same trees those maples
they got lost in this canyon in the hill country
thus the name lost maples

we always meet my two brothers and their wives there
and have 3 days together

my wife and i usually hike the first day
this year we did a hike up the western side for 5-6 miles
its interesting to see the difference in the vegetation and leaves
each year and
to see how the terrain has changed

this year the leaves were much greener and since we have
not had a lot of cold weather yet there was not much of the
beautiful leaf changes that you usually see

if you are a newcomer to lost maples go to the maple trail
at the start of the east trail
its only about an half mile walk
then go to the west trail and walk to the ponds
you can usually see a good variety of leaf changes on these
two walks

for those who are ergonomically challenged these are the best
trails to walk

ROMO GUMBO
im a big cowboy fan
its been a rough 15 years

we have romo gumbo
if youve eaten gumbo you know they have a little of everything
in there
it can be too hot and spicey or it can be too greasy or it can
be too gooey or sometimes it just seems to be just right
thats the way romo and the cowboys were last night
just right

despite how bad theyve played this year they still have a
chance to make it to the playoffs

hope the cowboy cook saved the recipe from last nights game

shout out to those aggies
great game with the bama guys
guess im glad yur in the sec now

good job longhorns of honoring darrell k royal this weekend
with that first wishbone play
am sure dkr would have liked that
good game horns

the hogs well there is always next year with yur new coach

EQUALIZER

the equalizer thats what football is
it doesnt matter what your political leanings are
what race you are 
what sex you are 
what sexual orientation you are 
what wealth you have
what job you have
what degree of education you have
what your age is

football doesnt care about all that stuff
everyone is treated the same 
youre a fan they like you

think thats why i like football so much as does
as lot of americans
(other countries the same could be said for futbol)

you can lose yourself into your football team and 
forget about the world around you 
at least for awhile

maybe thats why we are all so football crazy
no economy worries
no war worries
no job worries
no family or friend conflict worries
no political worries

we all come together as one 
football fans

im a cowboy longhorn razorback fan 
they all three can never get on the same page as to 
winning 
i guess its like a diversified investment 
a little bond a little stock a little cash a little real estate
a little gold a little international 

i have nfl and big 12 and sec in my football portfolio
so far this year i think i need to be more diversified

the boys they are on a roller coaster ride
going to the superbowl
not going to make the playoffs
maybe going to the playoffs
each week brings a different feel

the horns have won three but they havent been
tested yet but they will be sooner than later
thats sooners 
well know this next three weeks if theyre good this year

then theres the hogs
what can i say 
they just look bad
theres a good team there
just too much turmoil
a womanizing coach now gone replaced by a one year
debt ridden coach whose team is losing badly 
suggestions 
he needs to be fired now replace him with the old coaches
brother who might have better character
then find that top notch coach for next year

their year would make a good hbo show instead of 
calling it hard knocks it could be called knocked up

yep football is the ole equalizer
it brings us all down to earth 
i was there last year with the cowboys then there two and 
three years ago with the horns now this year with the hogs

ive had enough equalizing for now
but it sure makes me forget about what else is going on 
in the world for awhile

maybe we need an endgame here in the usa
would recommend the dave ramsey method to congress

this was used in regards to the uncertain path that irene was
going to take
would use it for what is going to happen to us and the economy
in the future
it may be the most important word

should be interesting

longhorns play california in the whatever bowl
i dont even try to figure how what bowl game is being played
some of those names just dont sound right

its important to the horns so they can see what they may have
for next year especially the quarterback position
just pick one and sink or swim with that one
