alzheimers newa-veterans and alzheimers

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-VETERANS AND ALZHEIMERS
Image result for organicgreendoctor
today is veterans day
i would like to thank those in my family who served in the military
my three older brothers all served and retired from the military
my moms brother was shot in the pacific war during ww2
two brother in laws served also
there are multiple extended family members who have served
a great nephew is serving now in the marines

so
tomorrow is veterans day
i would like to thank them all for their service

no matter your politics you should do the same to those
in your family who are serving now or have served

today on veterans day
i ran across several articles on veterans developing alzheimers
here is a link to one of them
it seems as a whole they have a similar incidence as the general
population

however
those who suffered traumatic brain injury or tbi are 60%
more likely to develop alzheimers than those who didnt
have the brain injury or tbi

if you add ptsd or dementia to the mix the numbers get worse

my concern is
the number of these injuries that have occurred over the
last decade or so in the middle east wars
these are mostly young folks who got these brain injuries
they sad to say are
at a much higher risk than you and i to get alzheimers

thats a tough price to pay for serving your country
maybe right behind giving up your life for your country
they are just doing it in a slower more painful way
a more expensive way for society

so as we celebrate veterans day today
honoring those who serve
lets us remember to help these veterans who are destined
to enter that alzheimers disease decline that happens
as they get older

thanks again to all those who served

thanks to cdn and rln and hdn for serving
we are proud of you

hn thanks for serving now

its a healing day

ITS A HEALING DAY
this morning our dogs were abarking all night
it seems the coyotes were ahowling all night
the dogs bark as the coyotes howl

i staggered out of bed much earlier than i wanted to
i was thinking i need a lot of coffee this morning
then
as i looked out our large window on our 2nd story bedroom
there in the western sky
was this bright orange moon
stunning and beautiful
Image result for veterans day
then i got my coffee
turned on my computer
opened my email
there
the annual email from my historian brother
announcing it is veteran day today
listing then all the family members who served in the military
but as a historian he also adds historical information on the person
who served and some historical information on the wars themselves

as i started looking over the list and reading all the historical information
i realized
this is a healing day for all of us
remember half of us feel bad this week and the other half feel real good

we need a day like today
when we can all join together
to honor our vets
but
also to come together as one country

so lets all pause today
enjoy this day of unity
i am afraid that it may not last long
but
lets enjoy it

here are our family vets
several relatives fought in the civil war on both sides
several realtives fought in ww1
my moms brother was wounded fighting in the pacific during ww2
he had permanent injuries
a parents cousin was killed in ww2 at iwo jima
my three brothers served in the army and air force and air force
all during the vietnam war era
all three are now retired

two brotherinlaws seved in the military
one in the army
the other in the air force

my nephew served in the navy and retired
my great nephew served in the marines in iraq
a nieces husband served in the national guard

so our family served and we remember them today
for their service

it makes us realize what decisions our politicians make
can affect our lives forever

i as do many of you hope for peace
so those who serve do so in peacetime service

its their day, links

ITS THEIR DAY

today is veterans day
to honor those who have fought in wars for our country
and have served in the military
my view is whether you agree with a particular war doesnt
matter
when it comes to supporting the veterans who fought those wars

they signed up to protect us and some make the ultimate
sacrifice
they die

i always thought that veterans day should be a national holiday
lets get rid of say columbus day
make it a true holiday where all things are closed
a true memorial day
and
i think during election years that elections should be on
veterans day
maybe we could get more folks out to vote
as
the more folks who vote the better our democracy is
and
maybe we wont fight so many wars
and
maybe we can support our veterans better after they
come home
thats when they really need our support
as
it lasts their lifetime
those effects of fighting in wars

we havent always done a good job of that

so today im thinking of
ancestors in the past who fought in the war of 1812
the civil war on both sides
spanish war
ww1 the war to end all wars but it didnt
ww2
korea
vietnam
middle east wars dont think we will ever get out of there

most recent times
my three brothers
my oldest in the army
my historian brother in the air force
my rainwater brother in the air force
my judge brotherinlaw in the air force
my nephew in the marines and my nephew in the navy
my uncle who was shot in the pacific in ww2
my wifes dad in the air force

thank all of you for your service

LOST MAPLES

each year about this time we go to lost maples state park to hike
there and see the maple trees and red oaks change their leaves
just like the maples do in the northeast us

for some reason nature planted these big tooth maples in
the canyons along the sabinal river that runs through there
the micro climates were just right i guess
and theyve grown there for years and years and years

we try to guess which weekend each year and make our
reservations when the leaves will be just right

this year we missed by about 2-3 weeks
as weve had a lot of warm weather

we have been there enough that i actually have certain
trees in the park that i mentally use as markers for
how the leaf changes are that year
yes i remember them since thats not short term memory

many of these marker trees were green or just now
changing
these cold fronts coming through now should make for
a great show of leaves by thanksgiving

even without the great leaf change
the park as usual was beautiful and peaceful

its a weekend like this we need occasionally to
get recharged

rememberence, lost, romo gumbo

REMEMBERENCE

yesterday was veterans day
a day to remember those who have served in the military
especially those who lost their lives
these guys and gals are the ones that served to protect us
including protecting our right to vote last week

am thankful for the safe return of my nephew from his tour in
afghanistan
thankful for another nephew who served in the navy
thankful to my three brothers who served in the military
and retired after 20 years service
my rainwater brother my historian brother and my
older brother
thankful to my moms brother who served in the military
during world war 2
he was wounded while in the pacific war

thanks to my historian brother for reminding our family
members about our connection to this veterans day

LOST
my wife she and i go to lost maples state park
in the hill country just southwest of san antonio every year

if we catch the leaves just right
if the cold has hit some and
if the weather is just right
then the leaves on those maples can be as beautiful as
those you see in maine and vermont

see they are the same trees those maples
they got lost in this canyon in the hill country
thus the name lost maples

we always meet my two brothers and their wives there
and have 3 days together

my wife and i usually hike the first day
this year we did a hike up the western side for 5-6 miles
its interesting to see the difference in the vegetation and leaves
each year and
to see how the terrain has changed

this year the leaves were much greener and since we have
not had a lot of cold weather yet there was not much of the
beautiful leaf changes that you usually see

if you are a newcomer to lost maples go to the maple trail
at the start of the east trail
its only about an half mile walk
then go to the west trail and walk to the ponds
you can usually see a good variety of leaf changes on these
two walks

for those who are ergonomically challenged these are the best
trails to walk

ROMO GUMBO
im a big cowboy fan
its been a rough 15 years

we have romo gumbo
if youve eaten gumbo you know they have a little of everything
in there
it can be too hot and spicey or it can be too greasy or it can
be too gooey or sometimes it just seems to be just right
thats the way romo and the cowboys were last night
just right

despite how bad theyve played this year they still have a
chance to make it to the playoffs

hope the cowboy cook saved the recipe from last nights game

shout out to those aggies
great game with the bama guys
guess im glad yur in the sec now

good job longhorns of honoring darrell k royal this weekend
with that first wishbone play
am sure dkr would have liked that
good game horns

follow up, veterans day

FOLLOW UP
that dang neuropsych exam got me again
its the same one that got me last year
in fact i sat in the same room where i had my neuropsych exam
done last year at about this same time
i can remember sitting in that same room looking at the window
when i couldnt remember those words she asked me to repeat
back to her
thats when i knew i had a problem

so i dont like to take those exams as i know whats coming and
i know that i wont do well on them
i didnt
the problem is still there but doesnt appear to me to have worsen
much over the last year
of course ive taken one of these every 2-3 months over the last year
now i get to go 6 months without doing one

although most people cant believe i have a problem
when i do the moca test that is administered now in some doctors
offices as a screening test i have a problem with memory that shows
up on that screening test
it definitely shows up on that dang neuropsych exam

they also drew 9 or 10 large vials of blood from me also
told them why dont they just draw it into a blood donor bag
as it would be easier
guess ill have to take extra iron this week to replace that  blood

then i had that jet engine sounding mri yesterday
dang its noisy and i had ear plugs on and ear covers on
would hate to be in their without those on

next follow up in 6 months for annual visit

the future is looking better for alzheimers disease as a lot of
research is going on
the prediction is that in the next 10 years they will be treating patients
with medicine to prevent alzheimers disease
meds will be given to hi risk patients before they show symptoms
exciting times in alzheimers research

glad im around for the ride

VETERANS DAY
today is 11-11-11
veterans day
thanks to those who are serving and who served in the military

now lets take good care of those who served
a large group are coming back from the middle east wars and
will be entering schools and the job force
lets take care of them properly
many of their kids have not seen their mom or dads much over
the last few years because of the multiple deployments
many of them have mental health issues that need proper medical
treatment to help them enter back into the private world
the unemployment rate is higher in this group of vets than in the
general population
lets give them the extra help they deserve
weve done it in past wars
these guys and gals sacrificed a lot for us
lets take care of them

they will be our leaders and
have a lot to offer society
lets do whats right
come on congress take care of them
make your cuts somewhere else

thanks veterans
this is your day
