deerslayer

DEERSLAYER

thats what we call my wife she now
the deerslayer
no she didnt go deer hunting and shoot her first deer

she out of compassion for a yearly deer
did what was right
to put the deer down

on her walk along a 100 acre ranch land that surrounds
the country n
she walks the fence line which offers good views of surrounding
lands and the longhorns that are kept on the ranch next to this

on the walk she encountered a yearly deer
hung in a barb wire fence

(this is not the picture of the deer we encountered)

who probably had been there for awhile
seeing how torn up the ground was along the fence
and how worn out she was

she called me to come help
so i drove not walked like she did
and found the yearly with her back leg caught in the strand
of barbwire
her lower leg was partially amputated and she was bleeting painfully

i cut her out of the barbwire
she fell to the ground unable to stand but instead crawled like
you might see in some horror movie where someone was
being tortured

we know the deer was domed to die that day
from dehydration
from infection from the exposed bones
or eventually at night by the coyotes who were
destined by nature to come

we knew the humane thing to do was to put her down
as we say in the south

we did have a gun but we gave it back to the previous owner
even if we had a gun which i could have borrowed from a neighbor
i am so remote from hunting
thats 25 years since my younger brother and i went squirrel hunting
together
yes ive hunted deer before and i have killed deer
both legally and illegally
but i dont enjoy hunting anymore

but i understand how nature works as we see it every week
around here
we can hear the coyotes in the distance when they make their kills
and have heard our chickens being attacked at night
sounds like someone getting murdered

my wife she contacted the sheriffs department to help as their
animal control officer lives about a mile away
guess it was during their morning coffee break in their cozy office
they said let nature takes its course
no compassion in that office

other nearby ranchers were worried about shooting a deer out
of season and on someone elses property
even a nearby taxidermist and deer butcherer wouldnt either

our cowboy rancher neighbor was ill and in bed or he would have
done it for us

eventually my wife she contacted a friend who is a cowgirl friend
who keeps her horse in a nearby ranch
her daughters boyfriends dad hunts a lot and does youth hunts
with kids

they came out and put the deer out of its misery and its eventually
terrible demise at the hands of nature

it was dressed and taken back home to be used as food
instead of being left for coyotes or buzzards

thanks to my wife she for being compassionate and persistent to
end the suffering for this deer

shes not really a deerslayer
she just compassionate
