bits and pieces

BITS AND PIECES
it is thought that one of the reasons were all have
health problems is that we are such germophobes
it appears that we need some of these germs to keep
our defenses built up against infections

this am dy posted a funny item on facebook
that i think about a lot
i use to tell my patients something like this
you know like the five second rule

first child eats dirt
parent calls doctor
second child eats dirt
parent cleans out mouth
third child eats dirt
parent wonders if she really needs to feed him lunch

ive always said that good  compost smells good enough
to eat
in fact recently when i took a handful of my compost from
my compost pile
i thought as i looked around to see if anyone was looking
of course out here where we live there is no one looking
i started to take a big bite out of that compost
but i didnt

wonder if the bacteria in compost that helps make it work
would work like a probiotic

after the weather the last month here at the country n
i am 100% sure that i never ever want to live where its
cold like this in the winter

i know how cold or bad a winter we have
based on my firewood consumption

each year i buy a cord of firewood from hippie steve
who use to look like an old hippie
im sure he was one
he delivers our wood and plays that good on 60s and 70s
music as he is unloading and stacking it
i think hes hard of hearing from whatever he use to do
in his younger days

last year at the end of the year i had 1/4 of the cord of wood left
now as of today i only have 1/4 a cord of wood left
and will probably have to get more to get through the winter

that plus i got my electric bill from last month

the new f word
is fracking
we all are not stupid
if you mess with mother nature there are not good things that happen
if you f the earth and inject all that water down there
and the earth shakes where it doesnt usually shake
thats callled an earthquake

most intelligent people would conclude that fing causes earthquakes

please dont play all of us out here as stupid

then after the target mishap
is is debit or credit
clark howard says no to debit card use but yes to credit card
dave ramsey says no to credit card but yes to debit card

since i hate to carry cash around
and i have found that i stay on budget by using the debit card
and since i keep only whats necessary in my account
then
i will use the credit card for online use restaurant use purchases
that need some back up guarantee eg i used my american express
for purchase of our refrigerator then went online and paid the
american express charge the same day
and when traveling and making reservations

i will use the debit card for gas and groceries and other local
purchases

this all seems to work for me

colorados lighting up

COLORADOS LIGHTING UP
this is not about their new weed law
which went into effect on january 1
business is booming there it seems

so is the solar industry
the cost of solar panels have decreased a lot so that
more and more people in colorado are putting up
solar panels on their roofs to generate their own
electricity
during the day

the way this works is if you dont store the electricity
in batteries which are expensive is that as the
electricity is generated it goes eg at the country n here
it goes to our house first
if its not needed it then goes to the electrical lines
connected to my meter then goes out to i guess
whoever needs it next
maybe my neighbors

at the end of the month the electric company
takes the total electricity i used
subtracts the total amount of excess electricity i produced
(that doesnt include what i used as it was being produced)
to come up with a total amount that im billed for
eg
i produced 500 kw this month
i only used 200 kw of it
the other 300 kw went up into the grid
i used 1000 kw total
so i get billed for 700 kw

if i produced more than i used then i get a credit
but
have to pay $20+ to just be hooked up to the system

thats called net metering
if they give me credit its at wholesale price
if i have to buy its at retail price

thats one of the rubs between solar producers like me
and the electric companies

plus they want to charge another fee for use of their lines etc

(this house in the above picture is completely off the grid
and stores its electricity in large batteries
he doesnt have to worry about any of this)

in arizona and they are trying to do this in california
and colorado they want to charge $50 but the electric commission
said no you can only charge $5

so if i lived in arizona i would pay $25+ before i use any electricity
california is trying to make it $100

im sure texas is not far behind
its whoever has the most political influence
ie cash

the other problem thats happening is that there are more and
more homeowners producing electricity such that there is a
surplus during the day that goes away when the sun goes down

the electric companies havent figured out how to store or use
this excess electricity
they are looking at massive battery banks that are expensive

so it seems its going to be a battle between the large electric
companies and the solar industry and us homeowners
we know who probably has the most influence
right

knowing better is ok

KNOWING BETTER IS OK
thats what my english professor use to say
to us in class
besides teaching english he use to work on broadway
producing writing acting and as a speech instructor for
actors

he would say if you know and understand the rules of grammar
then its ok to break them
as long as you know better

he said it and i believed it

in high school the one poet that i found the most interesting
was e e cummings
since he didnt use caps and didnt use punctuation correctly
so when i started wrting this blog i did the same
it all seems a waste of time hitting that shift button all the time
it slows the progress a lot of writing
i elected to drop the punctuation to speed things up some

also when i type this blog i just start writing and dont correct
any mistakes as i go since that interferes with the flow of thought
i go back on my computer and look for mistakes first highlighted
by my spell checker
of course the spell checker can knot find know problem when i use
words that are spelled different but are pronounced the same

aye have two go back end find them myself and correct them
sometimes they fall threw the cracks and eye miss them
sew
i rely on my wife she that writing teacher to find those mistakes
yes she lets me know if i make a mistake
and dont find that homophone thats what there called

i usually correct them but sometimes i just leave them like they are
since i thought
the readerll figure it out

we make our language too complicated now it seems
so i wish we would ee cummings it some

texting has helped a lot
u c this a lot w txtng

i guess what im saying is do we need all these homophones
and their different uses
cant we just have one of them
eg i like their the best of there their theyre
or no instead of know since its shorter
or rode road rowed
or hoarse horse
and the list goes on

if i wrote the horse is horse
you would know if he was a talking horse he would sound raspy

i know if my english professor read my blog
he would not roll over in his grave
he would like my writing since i know the rules
he taught them to us and said it was ok

so in this case knowing better is ok
