THEY JUST WANT TO BE CHALLENGED

back in the day it was
i dare you
things like
eat a bug
eat a real hot pepper
eat dirt
pick up a snake
tump over an outhouse

now it seems that the teenagers and kids
well their dares and challenges have to
go further
they want to show it on facebook or youtube or other sites
to get likes and recognition

i guess the most recent challenge
was the tide pod challenge

in this challenge
the teen swallows one of those tide pods
i can only imagine the burn it must give
their tummies
and
what a surprise it must be the following day

now
my wife has been retired since june
so shes not around the teenagers anymore
to keep her uptodate on all the teenage
shenanigans

now she had heard about the tide pod thing
we have something like that we use for our dishwater
that we keep up on a locked shelf about 7 ft high
so our granddaughter wont get tempted to eat one
of them
they look like a nice piece of candy you might
get in a wrapper at a restaurant as you are leaving

so yesterday she asked me about my blog
whats that thing about the kids sticking a condom
up their nose

you havent heard about that yet
the snorting condom challenge
well i told her i keep up with all the important news
from my various news feeds
if it happens i know about it

so for those who dont know how it works
the snort a condom challenge
the kids unwrap a condom
pinch one nostil
insert the end of the condom into their other nostril
close their mouth
then
inhale and inhale
until the condom slides down the back of their throat
they reach in and grab it and pull it through

the risk is choking on the condom

so far there has been no reports of this happening

however
before this became a fad
well use your imagination
there was
a case of condom pneumonia
and
a case of condom appendicitis

this isnt about the man with the cape
maybe though he should have been wearing something else

back during the vietnam war i heard stories of guys
coming back from there with it that didnt respond well
to any treatments
it was resistant to all the known antibiotics available at
the time
sort of
like this poor superman guy

since the vietnam war there have been several well known
antibiotics developed that many of you have probably
taken by mouth
or
got a shot in the booty for things like pneumonia
cipro or ciprofloxin zpack or zithromax and ceftriaxine or rocephin

i first met rocephin as an intern in the 80s
i was able to order it for a child with h flu meningitis
instead of giving him two iv antibiotics
one that was toxic to the kidneys

well like most antibiotics they have been misused
by you and by me
so now these superbugs are resistant to all of them

now
the first superbug gonorrhea infection has appeared
in this superman guy
there is no regular antibiotic that will work
so
this superman now has a superbug infection

yes like the vietnam vets he got his while
visiting the same area

there are several venereal diseases that are having
an up tic in numbers
hepatitis c and hiv and syphyllis
at least all these are treatable
the hiv needs a lifetime of treatment
the other two can be cured
although hepatitis c treatment can cost thousands
of dollars

during my career i treated a lot of cases of gonorrhea
usually they were genital infections
sometimes the patients didnt even know they had it
especially an unsuspecting partner

i saw newborns with eye infections and meningitis
i saw adults with joint infections skin infections
and at least one case of meningitis

all preventable
with that thing the teenagers are snorting up their noses
to replace the old thing of eating tide pods

now i realize they get these ideas
since they dont know what else to do with them
since there is little true sex education in school
sorry
telling them not to do it never worked

there is a drop in family planning clinics where they
are told what they are to do with them

they really dont know what to do with them
so
they snort them up their noses

so
i think its time to do something about this
lets educate our kids
that those things are to be used
in that area below the belt
to
prevent pregnancy
to
 prevent stds
to
prevent a drug resistant gonorrhea

not sure where we all went wrong with all of this
but
somewhere we screwed up

good morning joe

GOOD MORNING JOE

every morning i crawl out of bed
all sleepy eyed
all croggy headed
blurry eyed

i scoop out enough coffee into my filter in my new pot
enough to make strong coffee
i pour in my filltered water
i then push all the buttons on the pot
especially paying close attention to the one labeled
bold
i punch it and make sure it lights up
i dont know what that pot does when i push that button
but
it makes a good strong cup of coffee
ok
so my tj coffee also has the word bold on it
so
i drink bold coffee

i was disappointed the other day when i saw where
this judge had ruled coffee may cause cancer
i thought
how can a judge make that ruling
should someone like the cdc or some coffee researcher
be telling us this
something doesnt seem right here

now
i gave up my cigarettes years ago
i smoked the same number of packs a day as coffee cups i
drink every morning

it wasnt hard to tell that smoking was bad for you
i started wheezing and coughing a lot when i was
in college
so i quit
plus
as a doctor you know that things like heart attacks strokes
emphysema chronic bronchitis lung cancer bladder cancer
can all be caused by smoking

i had no problem knowing that smoking is bad for you
it will kill you

but morning joe
a cup of java
i dont think so
it cant be bad for you

for with alzheimers it may have a positive effect in slowing
down the disease
up to three cups a day may be the magic number in helping with
alzheimers disease
thats why i drink three cups a day
he makes folks alert especially in the morning
folks who drink coffee may live longer

so when coffee is made a chemical called
acetylwhatchamacallitmaybeitsbad
may be produced during the roasting process
maybe
probably
i dont care if it does

apparently this acetylwhatchamacallitmaybeitsbad
cant be removed because its part of the process of
making coffee

so
we be stuck right
nope

that can put that cancer warning on my morning joe coffee
it aint going to stop me one bit
i will continue to drink my three cups each day
no matter what the label says

sometimes you just have to do what you feel best
for yourself
maybe
even think for yourself

so
im sipping my 2nd cup right now
all alert and perky now
and
thats the way i want it


the reason that call it morning joe
they dont really know
it may be cause a joe is a normal average guy
its the drink of the regular guy
so
