ALZHEIMERS NEWS-CONCUSSIONS AND ALZHEIMERS

whenever i am interviewed for an alzheimers study
they ask if i ever had a concussion
if i say yes
they go into greater details on each event
for me
thats three

the thinking is that concussions may put you at risk for
developing alzheimers disease

recent researchers looked at afghanistan and iraq war veterans
who had sustain one or more concussions and compared them to ones
who didnt have concussions

they looked at areas of the brain that are the first to
show atrophy in alzheimers disease
they also looked at areas of the brain as controls
that arent usually affected by alzheimers disease early on

what they found was that in folks who had been concussed
there was lessening of the cortical thickening of the brain in the areas
that alzheimers disease attacks first
to cause shrinkage as the disease progresses

the average age of these vets is 32

so these concussed vets brains now have thinner brain cortex
in these areas
implying that if alzheimers attacks the atrophy may be worse
also
if you are genetically programmed to get alzheimers
like with the apoe 4 gene or the dominant alzheimers gene
you would be at an even higher risk for developing alzheimers in those areas

so
this may be another reason to think about
playing concussive sports
especially
if you are potentially programmed genetically to get alzheimers
thats at least 25% of our population

several years ago i was playing softball
i pitched
i managed to get on base
i was on second base
the ball was hit to the infield
i ran to third
slid in there i did
kabam the pitchers knee hit me upside my left temple
the ball rolled towards the fence
i got up and ran home
scoring is what i did
i then walked over to the dugout
and watched as we finished the game

luckily for me my wife she had shown up for my game
i got my bat and glove and wondered to the car
when i got there she was driving thank goodness
i told her i needed to get my shoes i left them somewhere
my shoes from work i said
i was talking real goofy
ok she said as she drove well go get them for you
wink wink

well i dont remember any of this
i remember being on 2nd base
then the next thing i remember was waking up in a ct scanner
in the emergency room with a fellow friend doctor looking at me
making a joke he did
i then spent the night in the hospital under observation

then i entered the post concussion world

the next day i remember being at my sons baseball game
feeling strange detached almost spacey all day
tired
had some trouble thinking and talking
there was some headache easily relieved with acetaminophen

then over the next month i noticed especially at work
that my brain seemed to slow down
most noticeable was my ability to calculate drug dosages in my
head
i seemed to have lost some of that ability for awhile

then years later when interviewing for the alzheimers disease
research study
they asked ever had a concussion or head trauma

well yes i said
i told them the above story
then i fell once while pole vaulting in the eight grade and hit the
back of my head
was dazed and confused like matthew mcconaughey for awhile
his was for a different reason
then
another time i was playing quarterback and got dinged good in
the 9th grade
at halftime i wondered into the other teams dressing room and
the coaches had to come and get me
i played the second half
i just dont remember it

so yes i had three concussions

so what what difference does that make
it seems there is a relationship between concussions and dementia
later in life

so
today i say to david ash the quarterback of the texas longhorns
who missed most of last year because of a concussion

just give it up
its not worth it

its time to make that change in direction in your life now

CONCUSSION

all of us watching on tv and the fans in the stadium saw what
happened and knew that colt had had his bell rang real good
those in medicine recognize those hand movements of head
trauma
but
no one on the side lines noticed and sent him back to play
he is now out at least this weekend for concussion symptoms

how many of these does it take to start causing permanent damage

in the evaluation of dementia there is a lot of questioning of whether
or not the patient has had repeated head trauma or concussions
and an mri or ct scan is done which sometimes can show changes
later on in life of old head traumas

what if he had got another concussion that game
the additive effects of two close together could have been
significant

there is a strong link between repeated head trauma or loss of
consciousness and the development of alzheimers disease
protect your  head and your football playing kids heads

concussions and repeated head trauma in patients with the apoe 4
genotype make them at higher risk for alzheimers disease
lets see
remember 3 concussions in my life
well dont remember them but am told about 2 of them
i have the apoe4/apoe4 genotype
wonder if that head trauma affects me in any way
did play quarterback and ended up in the visiting  teams
locker room once
had to be led back to my team
finished the game though
so im told
wonder if i could have played for the browns

VISIT
road trip planned during the holidays
will be visiting relatives and a friend with my wife she and
my historian brother he
will be visiting my friend gf who has huntingtons disease and
my younger brother who has alzheimers disease
both are advancing in their disease process
not sure which is the worse to have
i know
