HABITAT LANDSCAPE
this last year ive taken over the landscaping for each habitat
for humanity house that we build
it is one area that had been ignored in the past after the
house was finished
partly because of the lack of money left over for landscaping
at the end because sometimes when building you run into things
that require a lot of extra expense that is unexpected so
its important to do the best job on building the house
the landscape gets whats leftover
and again
sometimes thats nothing

since i have an interest in landscaping and gardening
i became involved knowing that it wouldnt get done exactly
the way i would do it at home but
within the confines of the budget i decided to do the best we could

for each 400 square feet of grass i replace with a mulched area or
a rock area i save between $30-$50 which then can be used on
something else in the landscape to get rid of more grass or to
buy more shrubs or more soil for garden or flower beds

each square foot of area that we can get rid of grass will save the
owner from watering and fertilizing and caring for it

we also have individuals and landscape companies and some
nurseries who have given us plants and supplies that have helped a lot

remember these areas without grass are pretty much maintenance free

the rest of you if you have some extra native plant let me know or
if you have mulch left over let me know i want it

this is in an area called blackland prairie where a lot of farming like
right now corn is done
in fact we joked we should just plant the yard with corn and it
would look good

here is the front of the house
these houses are simple designs but are well constructed
and have an efficient layout

here is a front view of the house where we laid sod and near

the road where the mailbox was we laid black plastic then

covered it with rocks from the job site and from a landscape

company who sometimes donates or gives them to us 

at a reduced price

here is the rock in place so the land owner will not have to 

weedeat or mow this area or water it or fertilize it

here is my wife she in a moment of rest

she is such a trooper this summer helping me out 

while im injured

this area was covered with black plastic then in the center

of it a spineless cactus that will eventually be 6ft 

in diameter is planted

then to the left and right of her a autumn sage or 

salvia greggii will be planted and allowed to

just grow 

the area around the cactus is covered with rock 

that matches that by the mailbox

then this area is covered with a 4 inch deep 

native hardwood mulch

this will be a totally maintenance free area

                                         a live oak is planted at the edge and over time will
                                         provide shade for the front of the house
                                         so this area will not require much after the live oak
                                         is established in about three years
                                       

 

the happy homeowner will assume the house this week

                                         he has put in over 400 hours of work
                                         on this house
                                         i think this is why i like habitat so much
                                         because they
                                         have to work for this and pay something
                                         back over time
                                         its not just given to them
                                         something i wish we could incorporate into a
                                         lot of government plans

                                         then the best part was this walking stick
                                         which i was allowed to bring home and
                                         let him lose on my property

                                         no he didnt spit in my eye

TEBOWTEBOWTEBOW
i like tebow because he stands up for what he believes in
in this case its his religious beliefs
others who believe like he does dont

he respects other peoples beliefs and really doesnt try to shove
himself on others
he is just open and honest with the way he shows it

i respect him for that

he also is a winner as hes shown on the football field
he has it
not every athlete has it
lebron does michael did magic did tom brady does peyton does
so does tebow

now the one organization and coach and probably starting
quarterback who could not feel threatened have signed
tebow to play
tebow cant throw the football accurately so dont ask him
to do that
but use him and use his skills
and make him a threat

yep that belichick he knows what he is doing
let the mumbling begin
i cant wait for the season to start to see how they use him
quarterback fullback tight end blocker punt team
cant wait

weekend musings

WEEKEND MUSINGS

i sure enjoyed the football games this weekend
this is my favorite time of the year for football

it was so painful to see peyton manning throw that
interception in the 2nd overtime of the game this weekend
i think i rather just see a team get steam rolled than to
see a painful ending like that
that one play was the difference maker
a super bowl could have been in the offer for the broncos
it will be a long off season for peyton and denver

but im glad that ray lewis will get another game next week
he is such a powerful player
hell be missed
to bad he has to play new england next week
prediction is thats new england goes to the super bowl
and wins it all
they are a machine

another prediction
tebow will go to the patriots as a utility player
wildcat hback punt team tight end receiver and
third string quarterback
if anyone could work him into a system and handle
the circus around him it would be
belichick

then there was the come from behind seattle going ahead
with 21 seconds to go then letting atlanta score
by icing the kicker with a few ticks left on the clock
you know they call timeout just when the kicker is kicking
the ball
except
it was wide right and atlanta got another chance
atlanta won
bet the seattle coach is sick
bet no one else will try to ice the kicker this season
talk about a long off season

we went to the movies this weekend
to watch zero dark thirty
that cia lady was kickass
as was the seals that went after bin laden
wouldnt want to mess with those guys
during the raid it felt like we were with them

which is good for me

TEBOWING
i like tim tebow
and cant wait to watch him on sundays playing for the jets
i like a lot of people watched him play whenever he was on tv

he doesnt hide his religious beliefs but what i like about him is he
doesnt push those beliefs on you and seems to know when its
appropriate to talk about his religious beliefs and
he seems to have a respect for those who dont have religious
beliefs or have a religion different than his
he probably gained this from his world travels

i learned this from seeing people from different cultures
you have to respect a persons personal religious beliefs
and ask that they respect yours
i would see protestants moslims hindus atheist agnostics budhists
all in one day
each religious belief was different and sometimes affected how
the patient was managed

yes tebow
you wear you religion on your sleeve but you dont wipe it on someone
who doesnt want it on them

he came to this area this weekend for easter sunday
100 buses transported people to the services
roads were closed down
people came for miles and arrived hours before the service started

maybe he should run for president one day

THE FUNKY CHICKEN
my wife she and i and relatives did the funky chicken this weekend
the tour i mean not the dance

dang what people will do to house a chicken
these are animals not your kids
well think some are treated like they are their kids

its interesting to see how backyard chickens can be tucked into
the backyards of house in an urban city and be discreetly done
and be intermingled with the landscape and architecture of the
property

also it was fun to see the coops the landscaping and the house themselves
to get ideas for the country n
this is actually where i got a lot of ideas for my landscaping ive
done from doing these tours
many of the homes had xeriscaped landscapes done

be sure and do the funky chicken next year

HABITAT
this week there is one more workday left on wednesday
its doing all those final touch ups that need to be done
before the new home owner can take over the house
this weekend the final landscaping will be done then
the next weekend the house is hers
know shes excited

ive learned a lot of skills that i can use here at the country n
especially as i redo my old barn
ive also met a lot of interesting people who volunteer
and a lot of skilled workers who make building this happen

the majority of the work is done by volunteers
so volunteer where you live
ill guarantee that youll feel good about yourself when you do it

THATS LYFE

my wife she and i spent the week end in san francisco with
my older son he and my daughter in law rachel ray she and my
younger son he
we could easily live in san francisco
just walk to great places to eat within a few minutes
seems so different from our country n where we have to drive 30-45 miles
to get to these types of restaurants
there you have to have a designated walker instead of a
designated driver

ok i hate to travel as i have to take an antihistamine and antinausea
medicine when i fly so i wont throw up on the plane
its no fun to use that little bag
no fun for you and those people close by
so im wiped out the first day going and the first day coming back
but its usually all worth it

this time it was as we drove to palo alto
you know thats where stanford is
its also where a new fast food restaurant is called lyfe kitchen
love your food everyday
the concept is to have fast food that is healthy for you
a new concept in the united states
most fast food is part of the new health problem in the us
this is part of the answer to the new health problem in the us-obesity

the food is organically grown, fresh, healthy, good tasting
kinda like what we eat here at our country n home
no its not a vegetarian place it has meat
but its healthy meat and is cooked in a healthy way

i had the veggie sandwich with portobello mushrooms
of course the protobello hamburger i cook is better
my wife she had the arts unfried chicken-think oprahs chef-that is
baked not fried and free range of course
others had the fish mahi tacos, soups and salads
i wanted the eggplant parmesan but had to make a choice
they have beer and wine available also
organic and local of course

the size portions are good but not like what you see where
you get a huge plate full of stuff you cant eat at most places

the decor is all sustainable-bambo tables, recycle stadium seats, etc
they even have a shelf herb garden
a green decor with green food
my type of place

we want one in austin
there are plans to expand this concept

ITS TIME bcs
ok bcs its time to do something different
we watched a 21-0 game that was boring boring

thanks to tebow time the night before we all got to
see what excitement a true bcs playoff could be like
so the football weekend wasnt a total lost

the bcs game should not be after the first nfl playoff weekend
what were they thinking
i almost forgot about the game after the games this weekend
thank goodness that travelling day drug knocked me out and i
slept through the last 3 quarters of the game

yes bcs guys its tebow time
thats the kind of excitement we need
do something different next year or youll start to lose us fans

my wife she signed up for a bowl thing at work
i picked them for her
enough people didnt sign up so they dropped it
those teachers dont get paid enough to wager on a game anyway

i kept up with all the games
didnt watch them all though

so i picked 14 wrong and 21 correct
even picked the godaddy.com game
my wife she wouldnt let me watch it though because of the commercials
always thought that was a porn site or something until i got my domain
for this blog and found out what the blog was about
deceitful advertisement

it just makes you feel good to hear his voice recite this poem

the quarterback from baylor
that just won the heisman trophy
why is he so special

his high school senior class had about 450 students
his class rank was number 7
he finished early and enrolled at baylor
he graduated in less than three years at baylor and is working on
his masters degree
if he doesnt go pro next year (which he is stupid if he doesnt)
he plans on going to law school

texas and other schools wanted him to play defensive back
and didnt think he had what it took to play quarterback
his now coach believed in him
and helped develop him to the quarterback he is now

he should be one of the top quarterbacks drafted next year
think michael vick without the attitude, without the baggage, but
with more intelligence
he appears to be the real deal
cant wait to see him play at the nfl level

so we can all enjoy it

well they would have but they didnt have a time out left

deportation, dental, football

DEPORTATION
well they have come with a way to cut the budget some more
its by deportation

they want to deport seniors instead of illegal aliens
so pack your bags if you have grey hair
the immigration department had decided to deport seniors
to lower the cost of social security and medicare

apparently older people are easier to catch and will not
remember how to get home

so i started to cry when i thought of many of you
getting deported and stuck on that bus
then omg
it dawned on me
ill see you on the bus

please save me a seat at the front of the bus as
i get bus sick real easy

DENTAL
have to go back today to see the dentist
dont look forward to it
felt like i was tortured last time
have just now recoverd
glad i had some vicodin to take along the way

sure hope he doesnt get up on that table and pull and twist
like he did last time
that was not fun at all

sure wished i had taken care of my teeth when i was younger
brush floss get regular cleaning
and regular dental checks

was picked up by a lot of newspapers and internet news sites over
the weekend

the sites are from across the united states and from other countries
some of the newspapers did stories of local people fighting the
disease and coupled it with the article from the austin american statesman

have gotten a lot of response and questions from those readers

have read stories and received stories of people in various stages
of this disesase
hope their stories are being told and hope people will listen

one of the goals is to touch as many people as i can to get out the
story of alzheimers and put some faces on this disease and to let
people know that early treatement and early diagnosis is important

but did like to watch john elway play in his day

like to watch tebow play
is not a religious thing either
he doesnt fit the mould of the nfl quarterback
whatever that is
but know that he and his teams win though
