its the water stupid

ITS THE WATER STUPID
in the presidential race the most important issue is
its the economy stupid

in this area the issue that may limit development in this area
is not the economy
ours is one of the best in the us

its the water stupid
we need to realize this and all start doing something about it

aquifers lakes wells rain water systems levels are all low despite
all the rain weve had this spring and winter
if we get a hot dry summer like last year we
could be in water trouble here

i know you just go in there and turn the faucet on and
the water comes out
what if one day it doenst come out or is restricted more
than just alternating watering days and no washing your
car days

whats a person to do
on a personal level
you cant make it rain but
you can conserve water

if you open your faucet to run water to get hot water in your sink
run it into a bucket
in some houses thats 2 gallons
in a year that about 750 gallons
about what my wife she and i use in  two weeks

theres a method of conserving water called the bucket list
not the bucket list ive done and am trying to get through
while i can
but a bucket under the faucet shower etc

catch that water in a bucket and use it to water plants

when you wash veggies run it in a bowl and use it for plants

when you shower catch shower water and use it for flushing toilets or
watering things outside

when you wash your hands catch that water

when you boil taters or eggs or pasta
save that water in a bucket and use it in your yard
i pour mine down my central compost basket in my
keyhole garden

if you have a fish tank
save that water for your garden
its a great liquid fertilizer
my wife she puts this on her square foot garden at school

save water from water bottles left over drinks and use
in the landscape

you do have to be careful what you pour on your plants
though
some things cant be put on plants like clorox water and
other caustic liquids

catch water from the ac units in the summer
sometimes we will get 5 gallons a day from ours
pure distilled water

when you take a bath scoop that water for use in the landscape
and again
when you shower catch that water in a bucket

these methods above are how we managed to keep many of our
plants in our yard alive during the severe drought last year
and how our garden survived partially from this recycled water

of course we have an incentive here at the country n as we
only use rainwater for our water source

we are already where you will be in a few years

rethink the drink, seriously, bye

RETHINK THE DRINK

when you are thirsty you should drink water
thats what your body is programmed by nature to drink
to satisfy your thirst

if you get up and drink a latte then have a soda for lunch
then have a sweet tea for the afternoon then have a
ginger ale for supper
you have consumed close to 800 calories of sugar

do that for a month and youll get 24000 calories from
sugar
that means for you
fat on your behind and belly and thunder thighs

its this excessive sugar in many forms that is contributing to the
health problems in america
ie obesity
just look around its easy to spot

sugar comes in many forms
many times its hidden in the ingredient so us stupid consumers
wont know its there
heres some
high fructose syrup
fructose
fruit juice concentrate
honey
sugar
syrup
corn syrup
sucrose
dextrose

honey sweety its all sugar no matter what you call it
it is what it is

heres some sugar calorie content of things you drink in 12 oz
fruit punch 198
apple juice 192
orange juice 168
regular soda 136
sport drink 99
bottled sweetened ice tea 135
bottled water 0
organicgreen doctors rainwater 0

drinking a regular soda every day for a year can make you gain
14+ pounds
stop drinking that soda and youll loose 14+ pounds
what if you stopped drinking all those sugar watered drinks everyday
how much would you lose
you do the math
could it really be that easy

just stop the sugar drinks and drink water
and lose weight

dont drink fruit juices
eat the fruit instead
youll get more nutrition and fiber that way

it really is simple to do

SERIOUSLY
rick perry is thinking of running for president in 2016
seriously
hasnt he embarrassed us enough in this state
although he did provide a lot of material for the news and comedians
none of it good for him the state of texas or the republican party
surely he wont do it will he

BYE

well miss you
dick clark died
remember those days of watching him on american bandstand
got to see all those bands and singers

his show was watched by teenagers and young adults everywhere
and he did this for more than one generation
the show brought  all of us together with all of the new bands
miss you dick clark

no water

NO WATER
well they ran out of water
that community of 1100 people that live near here
they had been on stage 4 water restrictions for awhile
which dont allow for any outside use of water
and limited inside use
guess they didnt restrict enough
as they ran completely out of water

this should be a wake up call for people to restrict water use
in general as its a precious commodity
we cant live without it

since we use rainwater as our only source of water here at the
country n we stay in a perpetual state of water restrictions
we still take good showers, flush our toilets, wash our dishes
and water what needs watering outside

our solutions were to get rid of our st augustine yard completely and
replace it with xeriscaping and all native plants that get no supplemental
watering once they are established
we collect water for the landscaping-a simple solution with all kind
of different sizes of tanks available now
we use drip irrigation in the garden
we reuse some grey water for some irrigation
by using a 5 gallon bucket to catch shower water and dish water
we have low flow shower heads that can be turned off with the flip
of a lever during showers to eliminate wasted water
we have low water use washing machine
we dont run the water while shaving or brushing teeth or scrubbing
our hands
we let yellow mellow sometimes and use the outside facilities when
possible-little boys who visit get some pleasure in this
as they arent allowed to do it in town
i just tell them to find a weed and kill it for me

so if we all did some of these water restrictions we would all be in
better shape with our water supply
its not going to get better as this area continues to grow
many of my neighbors including myself have had their wells go dry as
the water levels drop around here

apparently the subdivisions water was from wells that were
dug into the aquifer that went dry and the water levels continue
to drop in the lake system that provides a large amount of water
for the central texas area

the water for the subdivision is being shipped in via tanks at an
expensive rate several times a day
we did this 3 times this spring and summer and its expensive
and is scary to have to depend on it as your water source
hopefully that wont happen here again

heck we got 5-6 inches of rain just east of austin but none of that
rain fell on the tributaries that feed the lakes
the lakes continue to drop
what will be bad here if we get into the summer here with no rising
lake levels
then a large area will be in stage 4 water restrictions

maybe i can start a water conservation class for homeowners
as we have become experts at it

save water, poop paper, dead yard

SAVE WATER
this hot dry weather brings out the need to conserve our
water
the lakes are low and many cities are rationing the water

ways to save water
-use aerators on faucet heads-they make cut your water usage
from that faucet by 50%
-use shower heads with reduced flow
we added these on our showers that also have a shut off
switch which saves a lot of  water
-can do navy showers
-look for leaky faucets or toilets and replace or fix them
-use low water flush toilets or dual flush or practice-if it yellows
let it mellow if its .......
-wash full loads of laundry
-if buying a new washing machine consider getting one with a
side opening as they usually use less water per load
-fill the dishwasher full before running it and scrape the dishes
well before washing them
-dont run the water when brushing your teeth or shaving
-water your yard thoroughly but only as needed or why not
get rid of some of that grass
(first thing i did when we moved in our house was to kill off
all the saint augustine grass by covering it with black plastic and
replacing it with mulch and landscaping using native plants)
-use drip irrigation where possible
-collect rainwater from your roof (if we ever get rain again)

POOP PAPER
there is a company that makes paper from poo
they use elephant dung and mix it with banana leaves
they can make 25 pages with one dump
now thats recycling

their website is www.poopoopaper.com

DEAD YARD
if part of your yard has died form this heat and drought
use this opportunity to get rid of that grass permanently
why not add a raised square foot garden or do a raised
bed of native plants that are xeric and can almost survive
the drought without watering it at all

one of the toughest plants in my landscape that i never water
is the esperanza or yellow bell
it is a perennial native plant that is green with nice yellow
flowers right now
zexmenia is another one that is standing out in my landscape
again its has not been watered at all
of course there is always the agaves or cacti
no water no fertilizer little pests trouble free plants

inked again, mcdonalds, no oil tax, water, my garden

INKED AGAIN
am determined to beat the ink cartridge prices (rip off)
so got my refill kit again to refill my cartridge
of course i did it without reading the instructions
this time i only have 6 black fingers and did not get any on
my counter top
(my wife she got mad at me last time i did this)
but i have a cartridge that prints out ok just real smudgey
but it is readable as long as you dont have to fax it

after awhile the smudginess all cleared up

paying for ink cartridges is like having to pay some of those
trashy bank fees the banks impose on us
just ticks me off to have to do either

MCDONALDS
so mcdonalds is trying to replace humans with a touch screen
computer that you do your own ordering on
that just doesnt seem right

now we may get our orders right
guess they wont have to pay for all those benefits they
pay now and all those high wages they pay

for some high school students they have provided a job
and for some its the only job they can get

well at least the computers cant fry those fries
not yet at least

sure do like to deal with a human at the checkout areas
whenever i can

NO OIL TAX
sure know when we are getting screwed by the elected officials
in washington
think that we should get the names of all the senators and
representatives that vote against taxing the oil companies and
print their names on the front page of all the newspapers and
post them on the internet for all to see so we will know
which ones are screwing us

vote them out no matter whether they are democratic
republican or independent

heck we get taxed pretty heavy every time we go to the gas
pumps to buy gas
guess thats to make up for the lost revenue from all of the tax
breaks we are giving big oil

you cant just cut programs and not find sources of revenue
all over america people are cutting their expenses and at the
same time are working longer hours and working second
jobs to balance out their budgets

maybe the government could learn a lesson from us

sure get nauseated reading about the no oil company tax

WATER
if you live around here where i do be ready to start watering
again if we dont get rain
most gardens need 1 inch of water a week
sometimes they need more in the hot windy summer
drip irrigation is the best
plants use 90% of the water from drip irrigation vs 60% of the
water from regular irrigation
be sure and mulch to conserve moisture
use the finger test-stick your finger in the ground to check for
moisture

MY GARDEN
im afraid to blog about this but my garden looks the best it has
looked in a few years
my tomatoes are growing like crazy
they sure liked the rain we had recently
just started to get nice red ones
they are loaded
hope for no attack of insects or hail storms which have wiped
out my maters in the past
glad i dont farm for a living
the bout of cold weather we had in april slowed things down some
but my taters, beans, peppers, egg plant, squash, corn, and okra
are growing good

more rain please

BB
heat win
tonight dirk and durant play again
