a strong candidate

A STRONG CANDIDATE
thats what they wanted at ut
a strong candidate
thats what they got this time

charlie strong

when i look at his picture im reminded of the story of the
exmarine who became a high school teacher in a rough
high school
this from facebook so you know it has to be true

just a few weeks before his first day in this new job
he was in a car wreck and sustained a broken back
he was placed in a body cast from his waist to his armpits
one of those things thats worn under your clothes

when he entered the class the first day of school in this
very rowdy classroom
you can imagine how noisy it was
paper being thrown everywhere
sagging going on
probably some bullying also
he steps up to the desk
looks them in the eye
reaches down and picks up a piece of paper from the desk
along with a stapler
and proceeds to staple that piece of paper to his chest

never had problems with that class again

the thought i had when i heard coach strong was hired
was that guy has some fireplugs for arms
bet he could be the strength and weight coach at ut also

bet those kids arent going to argue with him at all

the other was the obvious thing he was black
ut hasnt had a black mens coach before
they had a black track coach but let her go since she had an affair
with a student that lasted a long time
while a white coach just got a reprimand
probably will cost ut a lot of money when the suit is finally settled

kxan.com

when you look at ut football
its mostly black guys
wouldnt it make sense to get a black head coach
to recruit these guys
wonder why that hasnt been done before

but when you look at this strong candidate
he had coached at some good schools and when given the chance
to be a head coach he took a took a losing program and made
it a winning program in just a few years
his qb will probably be the first qb taken in the nfl draft and probably
will be the first taken overall

he recruits heavily from florida and now he gets to do that in texas
two of the best football states in america

when you look at his total coaching package
you can see why he was chosen
he has all the credentials
now if all those texas exes dont wear him down
and will just leave him along
hell win here
since thats whats important is winning
right

yep a strong candidate

take your vitamin

TAKE YOUR VITAMIN
we are always being told that by folks
arent we

when my mom was diagnosed with alzheimers disease
one of the meds she took besides aricept (donepezil)
was vitamin e at 1000 units a day

at that time it was thought that since vitamin e had
antioxidant properties and since there is a lot of inflammation
that occurs in alzheimers disease as the beta amyloid and the
tau protein accumulates that it may slow down the disease

further studies said no it wont
it may do more harm than good
you know the same for those of us who took it for possible help
with heart disease took it
most of us then stopped taking it

activities of daily living are those things most of us do every
day of our lives as we go about living our lives
they are simple things we dont even think about
until you cant do them

when i go in for my studies at the alzheimers research study i and
my wife she gets asked about my activities of daily living
if they followed me around every day or read my blog.......
which many of them do
they are always worried about what i may say
i have even cleared things with them before i write about them
eg new research thats not published yet or new studies that are
about to happen
sometimes i dont write about them sometimes i do

these adls they are called are things like
getting dressed
feedings yourself
walking by yourself
going to the bathroom by yourself
grooming yourself-my wife she will know when i cant use my
flobee anymore-youll have to google that one if you dont
know what it is

when people cant do these adls that are usually more advanced

enter a new study that gave these folks vitamin e doses i think may
have been at 2000 units a day
they showed these folks had a 20% improvement in their adls
which to a caretaker can mean a lot
it seemed to delay this decline for 6 months

however so far it didnt seem to make a difference in their memory
and no evidence yet that it slows down the disease itself any
but
when you as a caregiver are in the trenches of that day to day
grind of caring for a demented family member
that 20% is significant

if you have been there you know

it does not seem to make a difference in patients like me with
mild cognitive impairment or patients with early mild alzheimers
disease

my opinion if i was at this stage of more advanced disease i would
want my wife she to give it to me so maybe it would make
things better for her and others as they provide care for me

my thoughts would be so what if i had side effects
look whats going to happen anyway if nothing is done

that said a caution-dont give this to your loved one unless you discuss
it with their doctor as it can interfere with some meds
and
there is a potential for blood thinning and other problems that could make
things worse

so take your vitamin
maybe

to or not to

TO OR NOT TO
that is the question it seems now

as i went to target in late november to buy a gift for
a baby born to a mom who worked for me when she
was in high school and even then i knew she had it
is now a doctor in practice several hundred miles a way

i thought do i use my american express card to buy the
gift card or use the easier route of whipping out my
debit card punching in my code and saving transactions
later on

so i bought the gift card

then this month target announced it was hacked or somehow
all those debit card numbers and codes were stolen
millions it seems
i thought did i or didnt i use my debit card that day

i looked back and it appears that i used my american express
card to buy the gift card
i have rules i try to follow on using my debit card
and that day i followed my rules

when i buy a gift card a gift an online purchase an appliance
airline tickets donation bill paying etc
i always use my american express card

if they had stolen my debit card info from target
they whoever they are
could empty out my checking account and my savings account
and also pull out money that wasnt there
sure the credit union would give it back eventually
if i notify them in 2 days after it happens
then you lose more of your money

ive known people who have had to wait months to get their
money refunded
some banks ive heard stories even accuse the customer of
stealing it themselves
that was shaft of america bank that did that

now enter the american express card
if there is a problem i call or go online and it gets taken care of
my liability is only 50 bucks
have never in the thirty years ive had the card
well i dont actually have the original one
have i had a problem with them

i have double protections on warranties
i even had companies i ordered stuff from that shut down
and never received the stuff
well that was a wad of worms i bought from a worm farm
in dallas
they credited my account without questions

now i use my debit card a lot
in fact it was a long time before i knew that the bills had been
changed
i thought i had received a counterfeit $20 bill once when i
got extra cash back
i use it for groceries gas small purchases etc

when we travel i only buy my gas with my american express card
also for the motels hotels and restaurants
i never ever use my debit card at restaurants
you shouldnt either
also dont use it anywhere you cant keep an eye on it

although as with the target incident it can be corrupted
when you are watching the transaction take place

i hope that the debit card doesnt go away
im sure the banks would like us all to use only credit cards
the demise of many a persons credit ratings

the american express card we have has to be paid off each month
not like most where you can carry a balance
a nice feature that can keep you out of trouble
and has done well for us over the years

so
to or not to
i will as long as i can
