AN INTERVIEW
this year i was selected to be the
honorary chairman for the
bell county walk to end alzheimers
saturday november 72015

yesterday i was interviewed about this

the interviewer asked initially about how i felt about
being named the honorary chairman
and
about the walk to end alzheimers and what it means

she also asked a lot of questions about alzheimers

hopefully that will be done later as we near the walk time
in november

i talked about all the things that a person should be
doing to maybe slow down the onset of the disease
and
some think maybe prevent it
time will tell on that

with this disease

IT DOESNT SEEM RIGHT
every time i read something about this
or
talk about this
this is what i say

it doesnt seem right

it seems that teachers are always getting screwed
in the deal
whenever a decision is made about money

my wife she is a school teacher
which she loves to do
its her calling

when she was in high school she worked and started paying
social security taxes
she worked through college and paid
social security taxes
she worked off and on for several years and paid
social security taxes

so now as she approaches her eligibility to draw her
social security
she can only get a small portion of what she was eligible for
since
she is a school teacher

she has over 20 years paid into the social security system
plus
she would also qualify as a spouse on my social security
but
she doesnt qualify to receive any since
she is a school teacher

when i die she would qualify to get my full social security
benefits
but she only qualifies for half the benefits since
she is a school teacher

i ran the numbers once
since she started teaching later in life
if she said i dont want my teacher retirement you just keep it
and
just drew my social security when i died
she would make more money each year

of course
they wont let her do it

the retirement system in the progressive state of texas has
no cost of living adjustment
so when you retire it never ever goes up
so in 10 years you may lose 30% buying power of your
retirement money
in 20 years you may lose over 50+%

so heres an example of my wife shes potential numbers
teacher retirement in 2 years is 20k
social security after adjustment is 3k instead of 12k
if she used my social security is 0k instead of 15k
if i died she would get 15k instead of 30k

lucky for us we were were able to make investments in
retirement iras and 401ks to compensate for the loss
but
most almost all teachers are not financially able to do this
leaving many of them headed to sure poverty that
progressively gets worse as they age in retirement

the federal government recognized this inequity in the past
and put in a law that if a teacher worked a day after retirement
and paid social security  they would get the social security
they paid in or their spouses paid in
but
it was repealed several years ago
leaving
your teachers that taught you at least in texas to get poorer
as they get older

there is a petition to fix this back to the way it should be

remember this is not benefits they didnt earn
the teachers or their spouses paid their social security taxes

left out of course are those teachers who have no social security
tax paid into the system
that inequity is the result of districts not paying into the social
security system
around here killeen isd and austin isd do
in arkansas the districts pay social security taxes
so teachers working there arent affected

alzheimers news-dollars can help

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-DOLLARS CAN HELP
it was announced last week
that the house of representatives appropriation committee
just approved with bipartisan support
a real rarity now a days in politics
a $300 million dollar increase in research funding for
alzheimers research

thanks to the efforts of the alzheimers association advocates
many from this area were advocates
all are affected by the disease personally

now we are on the cusp
of having treatments to slow down the disease
or
if we are lucky to prevent it

sadly
if this money had been provided 10 years ago instead of
being cut from the budget
we would already be there
eg
i would be receiving monthly infusion of a medicine that
may push my disease way down the line
or
take a pill that would prevent my brain from producing
the bad stuff beta amyloid
thus
preventing or delaying alzheimers disease
or
my younger brother would have his disease delayed
or slowed down a lot
so we could have enjoyed his smile and kindness for
a lot longer
or
my older brother who was recently diagnosed

my generation would have greatly benefited had this been
done a decade ago
many wont be helped much now when the new treatments occur

its the generation behind me thats going to be helped the most
so
if you are one of my nephews nieces children or even a cousin
please maximize your health right now so you will be ready

-please control your blood pressure your cholesterol your diabetes
your weight your depression your anxiety
-please get a normal nights sleep
if you have sleep apnea or sleep issues please get them controlled
-please have a good review of your medicine you take even the
over the counter ones as they may increase your risk
-please get regular exercise
heck just walking 30 minutes 5 days a week is enough
thats about a mile and a half
-please dont do drugs or drink too much
-please dont smoke
-please stay active both mentally and physically
-please be as happy as you can
and
there are some vitamins and supplements that may also help

please do these to the max so that your can slow things down
those kin to me know what the disease is like
it can strike young and hard
its really devastating to the family

please be ready so that when the treatment comes
you all will be the best you can be
so the new treatments will work better for you

remember many of you will probably need treatment
before you have any symptoms
luckily new blood tests and scans will be available soon
to identify those who need treatment

i wish i was 20 years younger
so that i could benefit the most from the new treatment
