this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease

give up your seat

GIVE UP YOUR SEAT
if you give up your seat you may live longer

weve seen this picture of the office worker who is  standing working
at a desk
i always wondered about that
standing at a desk working all day
doesnt your feet get dog tired
then
i remembered i use to do that stand at my desk
to do my charts talk on the phone etc
but
i intermingled that with sitting on a stool when my feet got tired
and
when i was in the room with a patient i would try to sit down
whenever i could
to rest my dogs but also to put me on the same eye level or
below eye level to my patients
then
i would also stand a lot in the room
sort of mixing the two together
seems
now that if i had done more standing instead of sitting
i might have lived longer

in england those bus drivers of those double decker buses
didnt live as long as the
ticket taker who had to go up and down the stairs to collect
the tickets

so it seems sitting is not good for you
one study showed that adults over 60 who sat
for an extra hour a day
had a 50% greater chance of becoming disabled
another study found that sitters just dont live as long as nonsitters
then another study found that standing during the day rather than
sitting reduces the risk of heart disease diabetes breast cancer stroke
and other diseases

apparently when you sit too long your body starts to shut down
systems that stimulate metabolism during the day

so
if you work at a desk all day like those in those cubicles do
try to get an adjustable desk so part of the day you stand

if you are retired please dont just sit in your chair and stare
at the tv or just sit at the computer all day
you aint going to live longer if you do

stand up and walk around when you are talking on the phone
you know like those guys at the airport do when they make you
listen to their phone conversations

park away from the store and walk across the parking lot
i always do that but i cheat on the way back as i ride
the cart like a skateboard on the way back to the car
you are never to old to break the rules you know

walk around some when you get up to pee or get a drink
or get something to eat

heck i put my tools on my property in the wrong places so i
have to walk a ways to get them
eg my garden tools arent in the garden but are in the barn or
garage half an acre away

walk instead of driving when you can

take the stairs please

we have an upstairs bedroom which i walk up to several times
a day
makes me live longer it seems
but i do go out on the deck up there sometimes and sit and look
out over the pastures towards the river
relaxing has to help some doesnt it

then try to walk at least do that exercise its cheap and easy
to do at least 5 days a week for 20 minutes
heck do it every day

and
just dont sit there
you wont live long if you do
