early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living

alzheimers news-des

patients use to say to me
i need to lose weight
i would say to them
diet and exercise

man it seems like that was the best advice i could give them
prevent cancer high blood pressure diabetes heart attack stroke
back and knee pain alzheimers disease
the list goes on and on

now i know thats easy for me to write but hard to do
i can tell you i do it every day
my incentive
is that it may slow down or if done long enough may help
prevent alzheimers disease
i am genetically programmed to be at increased risk for this
awful disease
im doing all i can to slow things down

along the way if i happen to knock off a few other diseases
thats ok with me

the easiest diet to follow in the mind diet

its a combo of the mediterranean diet and the dash diet
dash was developed for folks with high blood pressure

ive written this before about the mind diet
it warrants repeating
now i know the us came out this week with new recommendations
for the american diet
you can see the influence of a lot of lobbying and politics in their
now the mind diet doesnt eliminate any food groups
it does recommend moderation in some groups
like red meat

what if we got our kids to eat right from day one
the amount of suffering that would be eliminated
would be pretty overwhelming

not doing so will continue to doom our future generations

mind diet is
eat a green leafy veggie and one other one each day
snack on nuts
eat beans 3 times a week
eat whole grains daily
use olive oil as your cooking oil
eat poultry 3 times a week
eat fish once a week
drink a glass of red wine a day
eat berries twice a week especially blue berries

limit the eating of red meat butter sweet pastries fast foods

its that simple a diet
now you dont need a gym membership
first be an active person
a cheap way to get exercise well its free is to walk 5 times a week
for 30 minutes
i like to use maintenance of our 10 acres as a form of exercise
eg i shoveled 2 truck loads of my country n compost to large piles
to make room for your leaves so i could have my chickens make more
lots of calories burned off yesterday
just do it

sleep especially deep sleep mainly on your side
allows the brain to repair itself
the garbage cells called microglia goes into the brain
and cleans out all the debris that accumulates inside the brain
it seems that the deep sleep and sleeping on your side
allows the blood brain barrier to open some and let
all the garbage cells in

so in summary
dont do these three things
expect to live a shorter unhealthy life scattered with misery
for yourself and your loved ones
