the egg

THE EGG
the egg has been much maligned in the past few years
causing problems with cholesterol for one thing
thats all been much disproved since then
especially
if you eat a free range egg thats recently been laid

now some companies call theirs free range but somehow
the rules get bent some so they can call them free range

here at the country n our girls lay legs that are true
free range eggs
they get the full range of 10 acres of land thats all natural
and of course all organic
bugs worms grasshoppers
right now a lot of grasshoppers
seeds and grasses

as they make our compost from the leaves some of you
have given me they carefully pick out all the weed seeds
from the leaves so whats left is a weed seed free compost
good job girls
and
they give us those delicious free range eggs

we have a friend who we have tried to give her a dozen
of these eggs
now people beg for theses eggs
we usually give away any extras we have
except during the walk to end alzheimers fundraising time
then we give them away asking for a donation

she wont take them
well once we gave her some that werent cleaned real good
my wife she usually adds a feather in the carton just for
decoration
she did not want any of that
so
we still bring her the eggs which are quickly scooped up by
one of her sons
he knows how good they are

occasionally we have to buy eggs from the store
they im sorry even those labeled organic free range
taste like cardboard

if youve eaten a fresh egg you know what i mean
the yolk is even a darker orange color

here she goes to the store and finds them refrigerated usually
next to the milk
we in the us pasteurize our eggs steaming them to over 90 degrees
washing them real good
spraying them with a chemical sanitizer
that doesnt sound good does it
wonder if that stuff gets inside the egg
once thats done they have to be refrigerated
sometimes for months before you get them

now in europe
why do they seem to do things better than we do sometimes
they dont pasteurize their eggs
they leave that important cuticle that the girls put on them as
they are laid
this acts as a barrier to keep bacteria out of the egg
they do a better job of having a cleaner living areas for
the hens
here in the us have you been to a commercial laying house
the hens there are all also vaccinated against salmonella
which isnt done much in the us
so
their eggs will be found eg in the can good section or dry good
section of the store

the us eggs would not be allowed to be sold in europe

so which do you think might be a better tasting egg
the us egg or the european egg

i think i know from personal experience here at the country n
where we leave our eggs out on the shelf for days
a little chicken feather and a little debris doesnt bother us

i wonder if our friend ate eggs when she went to europe
i bet she did
and
she had no idea

happy valentines day, bagels, keyhole garden

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

hope every one has a happy guess thats what you say valentines day
today especially my wife she
she is always a good sport about me writing about her on this blog
sometimes i do pay a price for doing it

here is an article on the history of valentines day from a posting today
on komando.com
history of valentines day

BAGELS

every morning i eat a bagel with a fresh organic free range egg that has
been microwaved
i even have a special microwavable dish just for microwaving eggs
i like the yellow part soft almost runny
it seems to have more flavor that way but
those holes are a problem in the bagels
they let the yellow runnnnnny part come through

so why do they have those holes in bagels anyway
so i googled it as they always have the answers
well some i cant post here but

the holes were originally removed because the middle part of the
bagel did not get cooked well so it was removed
and later the hole was used to place several bagels on a stick so they
can easily be presented for sale
so google says

guess ill just have to overcook that egg or plug the hole in the bagel
with something

KEYHOLE GARDEN

here is the photo of my keyhole garden i made out of an old
watering trough
i was computer challenged to get this picture off my phone so
my rain water tank nephew who really didnt fall into my rain water
tank helped me transfer this to my computer then got it posted

when i did it google didnt like it and wouldnt keep it posted
now maybe itll stay on my blog

in the center is a 1 foot circle of chicken wire that will be 3 ft high
its buried down to the bottom of the trough (about 2 ft)
inside this compost bin i placed shredded newspaper, my compost,
chicken poop, the natural gardeners farm style compost then a layer
of leaves and repeated this layering until its full
i will keep the center part watered well and all these goodies will
diffuse out into my garden

on the far side barely visible is a wedge like a piece of pie cut
from a pie that has rock stones and crushed granite that i can
step on to easily access the compost tower and the plants in the
middle of this garden

the metal bucket is a 10 gallon bucket that is attached to a drip line
that encircles the bed of the garden with about 1 ft distance between
the circles
this i fill with water and let gravity drip the water on the plants

i am thinking about adding the compost tower to the center part
of any 4 ft square foot garden i do for novice gardeners so they
will have a ready made compost pile thats simple to use and
easy to add more compost materials

kiss method at its best (keep it simply simple)

irene irene, school starts, egg, boys

IRENE IRENE
looks like shes not going to come this way
we sure could use some of her moisture here
remember katrina happened about this time of year and
took the path irene is taking but moved across florida into
the gulf and intensified

we dont wont that to happen again we just want some
moisture to our southwest area

this week will be the hottest summer ever where we live
as we have had 60+ days of over 100 degree temperatures
add to that the fact we are about 18 inches behind on our
rain fall this year
we now have the worst drought in this area on record

dont like setting these kind of records

irene irene we need your moisture
maybe one of your siblings could swing our way and
gently drop some rain

SCHOOL STARTS
well the kids are all ready and most of the parents are ready for
school to start
except those with new kindergartners
except those teenagers as shown by their postings on facebook

please be careful driving around the school areas
dont text please or talk on the cell phone in school areas while
driving
here its a big fine and is usually a big embarrassment for you and
your kids-its like riding to school with uncle buck

teachers are ready well most of them
my wife she is ready and her room is ready
its been a good summer
now for a good school year for all
good luck

EGG
its so hot here the chickens have decreased their egg production
so i had to buy some eggs at the store
man i hate to do that
usually this happens only in the cold winter time
so i bought the cheapest eggs i could find
ate it with breakfast this morning
think it was made out of cardboard

now i appreciate all the hard work our girls do to produce those
white, brown or blue eggs
cant wait for fresh ones
now know why those eggs i bought were so cheap

BOYS
except for romos interception i saw a lot of good about the cowboys
granted the chargers looked pretty good themselves
know the boys lost but scores dont mean much in these games
win all the preseason games and youll probably do bad during
the regular season

am so ready for football to start
high school starts this week
college in two weeks
then the pros (mean the nfl not college) start after that

come on man
we need some football

sleep foods,no eggs, ms round rock, spanish helps, melo

SLEEP FOODS
from yahoo.com

cherrries have a high level of melatonin which is what your body
uses to help you go to sleep

bananas have a lot of potassiuum and magnesium in them-these
help your muscles relax
they also increase the levels of tyrptophan and melatonin production
in the body

toast has a lot of carbohydrates in them which can also increase
the insulin levels which increase the release of tryptophan and
serotonin which can relax you and induce sleep

oatmeal also contains carbs which affect the insulin levels which
then affect the tryptophan and serotonin levels
oatmeal also increases the melatonin levels

milk especially warm milk (makes me sleepy thinking about it if
wasnt lactose tolerant) has tryptophan in it which is a precursor
to serotonin
milk also has calcium in it which helps with relaxation and sleep

so lets see lets take cherries and bananas and put them in a warm
bowl of oatmeal then add warmed milk and eat with a piece of
toast then go to bed
let the natural stuff take over and get a good night sleep

but wouldnt that make you sleepy at work or at school if you ate it
for breakfast

NO EGGS
a readers chickens arent laying eggs
causes are multiple
they got too old-chicken menopause its called
theyve been traumatized-stress such as a dog attack or a varmit attack
not eating well
too cold
too hot
decreased light
molting-where they lose their feathers
moving location of coop
sometimes they just lay them somewhere else you just have to
find them
(we just found 15 hidden behind their watering trough)
or just add more to your flock

MS ROUND ROCK
no not the winner of the beauty pageant
our old chicken
go to the right on google search and type in ms round rock to
read her story
shes a newspaper and tv star
but shes gotten real old-greater than 10 years old
she has gnarley arthritic feet now
think she has had a small stroke as she drags her foot and
slightly drags her wing
she rarely leaves the coop area now
she is able to get up the coop ladder each evening and flop
down each morning
we make sure she gets extra treats each day as she can not
roam in the pastures now to get seeds and bugs
even red the rooster leaves her alone now-she use to be number
one each morning

sucks to get old

SPANISH HELPS
learning a second language and speaking it regularly increases
cognitive skills and can delay the onset of dementia on an average
of 4 years-lets see learn spanish now so i can go to nicaragua and
converse with the locals and i wont get dementia until i get on
social security and medicare-maybe that will work better than
aricept without the side effects

my wife she showed me this article and my sisterinlaws husband
-the wet suitcase one-sent me the article
they have been trying to get me to go to nicaragua for several years
to visit their place on the beach there
now according to them i need to learn spanish so i can speak to the
locals in nicaragua  and have the added benefit of delaying the
onset of alzheimers

lets see eat right (mediteranean diet), walk every day, be active
mentally, control cholesterol, sleep good, take aricept, eat
chocolate, drink coffee in moderation, drink alcohol in moderation
and now add learning spanish to the treatment of alzheimers symptoms

sounds good
(none of these prevent alzheimers-it still shows up-they just delay
the onset of symptoms)

will probably add nicaragua to my bucket list

MELO
melo to the nicks
they just got better
carmelo anthony and stoudemire on the same team
move over miami
will make the second half of the nba season more interesting
