rains worth

RAINS WORTH

as manual comes from the pacific and the storm that just came
from the caribbean and now a new unnamed storm that will form
this weekend
they will jump on top of mexico from both sides and from above
luckily for us we will get some rain out of this in central texas
not lucky for mexico as some predictions are that they will get
40+ inches of rain dumped there

makes colorados storms look small huh
would hate to see the destruction it will cause
when you compare it to the destruction that the
colorado rains caused

i remember we got 10 inches of rain here in a couple of
hours once
and we were locked in by flooding for several days
the usual small river a quarter of a mile away sounded like a huge
freight train or huge jet engine 24/7

i would  hate to see what destruction it would cause here
that 45 inches of rain
thats 11/2 years worth of rain in a couple of days here
well now that would be 3 years worth of rain
since we are in such a bad drought

it interesting that things are greened up some around here
since we have had occasional small rains lately
but even though its green
down under things are in trouble

the lake levels around here are about to reach the lowest levels
ever since the lakes were first filled up a generation ago

the sad part is that it would probably take a 45 inch rain to fill
it up now

now some states are making things worse
they have levied a rain tax
how in the world can you do a rain tax
you know somethings in this life are free
rain should be one of them

apparently in maryland they will tax people based on the
impervious surfaces that have on their property
like buildings garages driveways walkways etc

the reason for the tax is the runoff from several counties
is severely polluting the chesapeake bay

i wonder looking at my property if they would do much to me
since my roofs all go to rainwater collection my house my garage
may 50 ft arbor my well house my bbq building
all the water is later used in the landscape at my leisure
and the rest is soaked into the earth

(and i know because i dreamed about it several days-there is
a cave under our house that the non collected water goes to
and it never reaches the river
this i dreamed before i started the aricept (donepezil) and even
on the aricept the cave dreams are more vivid)

my long driveway that goes halfway across my 10 acres
is all pervious since i elected to use rock with out sealing
it underneath so the water goes through
yes i fight weeds every year but i attack them organically with
the old pull up technique and the 10% vinegar orange oil
dish washing solution

i even have berms scattered all over the property to slow
down water run off and keep it on my property
after all its free so far in texas

i even use  these berms in my habitat landscapes
to help cut down on water run off and the need to
irrigate

well i dont live in maryland so ill let them worry about the
rain tax
but
i know that somewhere in the bowels of government there
is some rumblings to control our rainwater
maybe not tax it since that may not happen in texas
but
they are looking to claim that that rainwater is theirs
like colorado did
and you dont have the right to collect it

im sorry but thats not quite like the rain tax since i can
understand it sort of
it doesnt seem right

will they come over here and remove my berms and
rock edging and my rainwater tanks and all the mulch
i have everywhere to collect and keep water here
at the country n

could it make me a criminal
i might have to fortress up like on those doomsday shows huh
it might make me anti government
maybe ill start a rainwater dynasty reality show

i wonder whats next
a sun tax
a rule you cant catch the sun on your property since
it belongs to the state of texas

sorry somethings are just  natural and should be left alone

fires update, fair weather, football

FIRES UPDATE
theyre getting there
except for the biggest bastrop fire containment is happening
(34000 acres 30 % containment)

the spicewood fire west of austin is 100 % contained
the steiner ranch fire in northern austin is almost contained
the other smaller fires are also mostly contained

close to 1000 homes have burned in these fires

it is very smoky in this area
if you have asthma emphysema or respiratory problems then this
makes it difficult to breathe outside

there is even more fire fighters and equipment arriving now for
use in fighting these fires
finally

hopefully all those hurricanes will do something to bring moisture
into here to slow these fires down some

FAIR WEATHER
thank goodness for this fair weather
it makes all this fire business a little more tolerable but
not acceptable

its so nice to be able to open the house to the cool night air
makes it easy to sleep at night
as the aricept im on interferes with my sleep the cool night air
sure helped me sleep last night

yesterday i took my cup of coffee out to my electric meter
and just watched it spin backwards all day
finally the solar panels are overcoming the electricity used by
our air conditioners which have been running non stop now for over
3 months
it sure was therapeutic to see my meter reading less at the end of
the day compared to the reading at the beginning of the day
hope we can have more days like this


now we just need rain

there are 3 hurricanes abrewing in the gulf and surrounding areas
katia, maria, nate with nate the only one that has the possibility of
helping bring in moisture into the state
just dont bring all that wind that lee brought on us which
led to this disaster

FOOTBALL
maybe obama was smart to give his address tonight just before
the first nfl game of the year between the saints and the packers

he has an audience that may normally not watch his address
hopefully he says something that we can all grab a hold of to
make us feel better about the economy

am just ready for the nfl games to start
there goes all my weekends for the next 16+ weekends
sure glad my wife she likes football too
my sons they and i trained her well over the years
she likes things we like

baylor may be blocking the aggies from leaving the big 12
for the sec
baylor has the most to lose in this big 12 mess as they will
probably be left in the cold without a major conference to
be a part of
they and some of the others are filing a lawsuit to block the aggies
which will prevent them from going to the sec

WICHITA LINEMAN
well the wichita lineman has it too
glen campbell announced it this year
he has produced an album called ghost on the canvas
it will probably be his last one
he will do a tour promoting the album

during the interview he cant remember his age and other facts but
he remembers his lyrics
sometimes in this disease you remember the past quite well but
the short term memory is the problem
eventually you even lose the past memories as the disease marches on

tropical depression 13 is sitting in the northern gulf of mexico
stationary
means its getting stronger
it may soon become hurricane lee
wonder if it would gently gently move west and dump some
rain on parched texas but without any damage please
we could use about 20 inches of rain to get caught up
for the year
just dont dump all of it at one time

weather, we got next, lost medical records, fb musing

WEATHER
we have officially become the hottest summer on record
here in central texas
and there seems to be more coming as the next 7 days are
predicted to be 102 degrees or higher
dang 95 is going to seem like a cool spell when it finally
arrives here

have noticed some of the native trees and shrubs deemed the
toughest we have are starting to show the effects of the heat
and drought by yellowing its leaves
less tougher trees are dying much faster

there are fires everyday around here
luckily except for a few they have not been major ones
there is water rationing everywhere
its even stricter here at the country n

there are plans to start rolling power outages in this area soon
this will make things more uncomfortable than they already are

we need rain so

WE GOT NEXT
we got next
hurricane irene is going full blast now towards the east coast
and has little influence on our weather here
we could sure use some of its rain

there is a new tropical storm abrewing out east that may
become a storm in the next 1-2 days

we want that one please
send it our way but in a gentler form please
its our only hope to a break in this awful weather here

LOST MEDICAL RECORDS
recently a huge number of patients medical records were
accidentally released onto the internet for all to see
those may be lost forever
they are out there for everyone to access
possibly they may not be able to be totally retrieved even if
the breach is closed

in my dealings with the medical systems and insurance systems
over the last 8 months i have realized that my medical records
are zooming all over the internet from universities to research
centers to insurance companies-long term care, disability, and health

each of these companies seem to use other companies to handle
some of the data processing so multiple companies and
organizations are involved with my medical records
they are being mailed, faxed, emailed, and electronically transferred
to be permanently stored in lots of locations

one breach could release all my medical information to  the internet

thats all scary
even though most of what is happening to me medically im putting
in this blog for all to read however

most people dont want their medical information floating around
the internet for google to pick up from a search

irene irene, school starts, egg, boys

IRENE IRENE
looks like shes not going to come this way
we sure could use some of her moisture here
remember katrina happened about this time of year and
took the path irene is taking but moved across florida into
the gulf and intensified

we dont wont that to happen again we just want some
moisture to our southwest area

this week will be the hottest summer ever where we live
as we have had 60+ days of over 100 degree temperatures
add to that the fact we are about 18 inches behind on our
rain fall this year
we now have the worst drought in this area on record

dont like setting these kind of records

irene irene we need your moisture
maybe one of your siblings could swing our way and
gently drop some rain

SCHOOL STARTS
well the kids are all ready and most of the parents are ready for
school to start
except those with new kindergartners
except those teenagers as shown by their postings on facebook

please be careful driving around the school areas
dont text please or talk on the cell phone in school areas while
driving
here its a big fine and is usually a big embarrassment for you and
your kids-its like riding to school with uncle buck

teachers are ready well most of them
my wife she is ready and her room is ready
its been a good summer
now for a good school year for all

EGG
its so hot here the chickens have decreased their egg production
so i had to buy some eggs at the store
man i hate to do that
usually this happens only in the cold winter time
so i bought the cheapest eggs i could find
ate it with breakfast this morning
think it was made out of cardboard

now i appreciate all the hard work our girls do to produce those
white, brown or blue eggs
cant wait for fresh ones
now know why those eggs i bought were so cheap

BOYS
except for romos interception i saw a lot of good about the cowboys
granted the chargers looked pretty good themselves
know the boys lost but scores dont mean much in these games
win all the preseason games and youll probably do bad during
the regular season

am so ready for football to start
high school starts this week
college in two weeks
then the pros (mean the nfl not college) start after that

THIS IS BAD
the month of july was the hottest and driest on record here
in central texas
thats bad
the even badder thing is that they are predicting august will be
worse than july
so on august 1 it lived up to its prediction
official temperature was 107
and it aint goin to get better this week

guess we are going to turn into a desert here one day

EMILY
well now the new hurricane is named emily
maybe shell head this way in a few days and give us some
relief
don was a dud
just dont hit no major cities please
well watch this girl closely as it moves this way
girl dont break our heart as we need some relief

BAD BUG BACK
recently i blogged about that bad bug the silver
blister beetle
i thought we had him under control in my garden
however i was wrong

this weekend i went out to my garden to do my morning
inspection and everything looked ok
i had put flour out on my veggies to keep the beetles under
control
it worked well on the veggies as they left them along although
they may have permanently damaged my tomatoes and squash
time will tell

i went back out later in the day and the only plant i had not
put the flour on was a milkweed i planted in the garden for
the monarch butterfly
there were those dang beetles devouring the plant
they totally stripped everything off the milkweed

so i got a hand vac and sucked those suckers up and dumped
them in the green bucket of water (they cant swim good)

sorry about that monarchs
know its a bad year for you in central texas
hopefully extra watering and liquid seaweed and
fertilizer will bring back the milkweed

done deal, dang dan, shark week

DONE DEAL
well its a done deal
why did it take so long to do it
think they were just jacking with us

maybe our 401k values will go up today
since they went down on friday
a crisis was averted but
more work needs to be done

wonder where those cuts are going to be
here in texas it was mainly on the backs of the poor and
on the kids via education

cuts are good but we have to have more revenues
also where could we find them
lets start with those with incomes over the middle income levels
as the middle income folks are suffering the most now
and of course those mean old oil companies could be taxed
more and desubsidized

still like the idea of a new political party that is made of the
people in the middle of the political spectrum-thats the real majority

DANG DAN
dang that dan he just fizzled out
he hit the coast of southern texas and it was like a wall
there was hardly any rain out of the storm at all
texas continues to suffer the worst drought maybe ever

my rainwater levels are getting dangerously low again
we sure needed that rain
hope i dont have to purchase water

last october when we got a 10 inch rain i had 3 of my large
tanks unhooked so i lost a huge amount of rain that day and
then in may we had 6 inches of rain total here but
at that time i was redoing a gutter and had several tanks unhooked
and lost over half of that rain
my fault bad timing to do repairs so
may actually purchase water today just to be safe to have some
reserve

if i had not been disconnected on those two days i would have
plenty of rainwater available
i am in the process of reconnecting lines so that all my rainwater
tanks are now reconnected back together so this wont happen
again
bad timing

i see a large storm brewing in the atlantic maybe we will get some
rain from it
dang it must have been rough being a farmer and rancher in the old
days

SHARK WEEK




every august i look forward to shark week on discovery
its a good break between the summer and the start of football
how can those guys dare to swim with those big old white sharks
are they stupid or what

yesterday they put this diver in a big plexiglass cage and put him in
the water with the big great white sharks then
they took the guy out and put in some bloody meat
none of the meat was in the water at all but this big ole great white
shark came in at full speed and rammed the plexiclass cage and
broke the side of the cage

bet that diver wet his suit

hope all of you that are going to the beach have gone by now
if not dont you watch shark week on discovery

new middle, farmers, hurricane, fb musing

NEW MIDDLE
this debt limit crisis is making me fed up with politics
dont mess with our economy
both political parties are to blame
neither side should get a free pass on this
this is how washington doesnt work

the republicans have become too far to the right on issues and
the democrats are too far to the left
its the middle america that decides every election
they just seem to pick the lesser of two evils

always said we need a new party called the middle party
because thats where most of us are politically
the only problem is that this party would always dominate
the democrats and republicans as both would be always
out numbered

well apparently according to this article in the new york times
-make way for the radical middle-there is a new party
forming for the next election on the internet
the first state ballot they will be on is in california
could this be the start of that third party that we probably
need to balance out all those special interests that really
run things on both sides now

it may be a good start to a fresh approach to politics

FARMERS
its so hot and dry here now that we all are suffering from the
heat (my lower porch at 6 am was still warm from the day before
it already started out in the mid 80s in the cool of the early am)

the farmers are really suffering
some have even shut down production for the fall
they have to plant now for the fall season
tuff to do in this hot dry weather

support them at your farmers markets as much as possible
we dont want to lose them and have to totally depend on
whoever and wherever produces those veggies at the grocery store

HURRICANE
we need rain
our hope lies in a hurricane developing in the gulf
well that tropical wave has gone from yellow to red and
from a 10% chance to a 70% chance and is headed our way
hopefully it doesnt get diverted by that big high thats making
us all suffer

hurricane coming, poor willie, reverse planking, my nephew he-rainwater tank

HURRICANE COMING
could this be our relief from all this heat
this is a tropical wave that is drifting our way very gradually
hope the big high thats over us doesnt push it away from us

its only a 10% chance of developing but we all have hope
that it will progress

it is so hot and dry here that i have a cactus in the yard i planted last
year that is actually wilting


POOR WILLIE
willie nelson got busted for having 6 ounces of marijuana by a
border agent in el paso texas
originally the judge was going to just have him sing to them in
court and she would let him off
apparently that was unacceptable so the prosecutor decided a
$500 fine would be levied if he would plea guilty

now another judge decided said you cant do that and willie
has to be tried with the misdemeanor marijuana possession which
can carry up to a year in prison
now that would look bad wouldnt if willie locked up for a year

he just needs to go to california or colorado and go to a marijuana
clinic and get a prescription for marijuana to use for his chronic
wrist tendonitis
maybe that will keep him out of trouble

my water level is low in my tanks so i pumped all the water
out of the tank with the rock
