ITS A QUIET ONE

last year our walk to end alzheimers team called the organicgreendoctor
had a silent auction to raise money for the alzheimers association
we had it at a local venue a restaurant with outside seating with music

the auction was successful
we raised close to $1500

the two most popular items were
a organic square foot garden which i built
sited on the winners property
filled it with good organic materials
then planted a fall winter garden for her and her family
she won the bid at the last minute

the other item was an alzheimers quilt that was made by
my friend a retired plastic surgeon who you know must
do a perfect job on the quilt
she did
it was a popular item
and was won by a former patient who made a large bid at
the last minute to win it

since it was so successful as a fun raiser we have decided to
do it again this year
but
this time we will do it online
it will run for 6 weeks starting in the am at 700 am cst
and ending on sunday september 21st at 900 pm cst
if there is a last minute bid the auction will be extended
for 3 minutes to allow for a counter bid
this can go on for 30 min

so the items will be available to more people
over a greater period of time

an organic 4ft square garden that will be made from
2in x 16 in cedar boards with 1 ft squares marked off
this will be filled with the best orgainc soil that can be
bought in the austin area topped off with the best
organic compost also
the garden will be sited on your property by myself
then using a gift certificate from the natural gardener
i will personally have you and your family plant this
garden
last years winner grew in her fall garden lettuces spinach
beets carrots swiss chard asian greens onions garlic
winter peas cilantro oregano parsley etc
the gift that will give and give for years to come

two childrens quilts quilted by my friend the retired
plastic surgeon who has this quilting blog sutured for  living
these quilts were made for a relatives children but
the decision was made later to donate them to raise
money for alzheimers research
she doantes her quilts to a blog that auctions off
quilts for alzheimers disease and this blog has
raised thousands of dollars over the years for the
alzheimers associaton
she has decided to let me have these two beautiful
well quilted quilts for our auction
so
if you have a child or have a child thats planned for in
the future you should take a close look at these quilts

one that becomes a night night or a keepsake

if you live in this area you may know the monument cafe
in georgetown texas
if you dont know about it thats your loss

this item is gift certificates  that can be used at


the wonderful monument cafe
with its home cooked meals and the best
pies ive ever eaten and the best pinto beans ive eaten
this restaurant even if it was in the food capital of texas austin
would still be a popular place

or the monument market
which is like a local farmers market with
produce from local farmers eggs meats olive oils salsas wines
from local growers vegetable plants and its open every day

or the biergarten 
an outside venue with music and food

my favorite mexican food place to eat
even when comparing it to all the places in austin
which is saying a lot for the food and its venue
overlooking the san gabriel river

then there is the big organic garden out back of the
monument cafe where a lot of the food they cook
is grown

then as the time period progresses we will be adding more
items for the auction

all these items i could easily bid the max on them and be
quite pleased with what i bought

walking helps

WALKING HELPS
it helps two ways
walking does

walking the least traumatic exercise and the least expensive form
of exercise
improves your health and related to alzheimers disease it increases
the blood flow to the brain cells
which improves memory and may help
slow down or prevent the onset of alzheimers disease

this last week while in san francisco one observation i made was
that you dont see hardly any morbidly obese people
maybe because more people walk there than most places
and
maybe because of all those dang hills

but

they also walk to end alzheimers there
as evidenced by this sign advertising their walk to end alzheimers
in san francisco

this second way walking helps alzheimers is that it raises money for
alzheimers research and for alzheimers education
its the major way that the alzheimers associaton raises money to
do all they do

the walk that i am most involved in is the
williamson county walk to end alzheimers 
which will be on saturday september 27, 2014 at 900 am
at the beautiful san gabriel park in georgetown texas

my team called
organicgreendoctor

in that walk

our goal is $3000

the reunion grille was a nice venue for our silent auction
the heat this week affected our turnout some
however the goal we set for our silent auction fundraiser
for our organicgreen doctor team for the williamson county
walk to end alzheimers on september 28 2013
was exceeded last night

thanks to those who turned out despite the heat
it was nice to see some former patients

the quilt that special quilt that was made by my friend
dr bates was won by a new quilter who won it
after bidding against more experienced quilters

this memory quilt was our highest bid item
of the night

it was hard to see this one of a kind quilt leave my
possession knowing the work dr bates put into it
and knowing what this quilt means but i feel like it
is in good hands now

the small quilt piece got into a bidding war and the winner
is a team member whose mother died from alzheimers
recently
this forget me not quilt piece will have a special meaning
im sure

the baseball that nolan ryan signed was won by a team member
whose daughter wanted it
thanks to dc and to the executive from the round rock express
who donated it

the tablet was won by a fellow employee who she hopes she
wont have to share its use too much with her husband

then the second highest bid item was won by a fellow alzheimers
committee person who with her husband and two daughters
are looking forward to the instillation of their fall garden

the dkr the royal scrapbook was a last minute add on
and was a large fundraising item also

thanks again to all who participated
which means you have helped us make that small step
towards finding a cure and or treatment for this terrible disease
alzheimers disease

FALL GARDEN

(this is my wife shes school garden after its been prepped
for the fall planting)

its about time to plant it here in central texas
but dont do it yet its too dang hot
unless you are a real experienced gardener
if you do you will fail

you should prep your garden though
rake it and remove any debris weeds and old plantings
apply a 3 inch layer of good organic compost over
the garden
then scattered a good organic fertilizer
you can gently rake this into the top layer of soil
then
lightly cover it with a good mulch like straw or pine straw
or even leaves to hold in moisture

if you let it sit for a few weeks
it sort of cures and makes for a better fall garden
you know like when you cook soup
and it tastes better the next day when all the stuff
sits together to increase the flavor

same here with the garden

ITS FOR A GOOD CAUSE
many of you who read this blog know that i am a study
subject in three separate alzheimers research studies at
the ut southwestern medical center alzheimers research center

one of the studies is the alzheimers disease neuroimaging initiative
the largest most important study ever been done on alzheimers
all of the tests i have done in this study are now available to
everyone if they know how to get them done

they also have done a complete human genome study of me
so that the answer to what is all in my genes is out there
somewhere i just cant access it

another of the studies i am in is one where they are measuring
proteins and inflammatory markers so that as of now the test
is close to 90% accurate in telling someone if they have
alzheimers disease or not

so if i could obtain all the results from these studies which i cant
since i had to agree to not being able to access the results
i would know to a great degree of certainty whether i have
alzheimers disease or not

again i feel that i have it

so now we are close to being able to definitely diagnose
someone with alzheimers disease or to tell them that their
symptoms are not alzheimers disease
but
we now need treatments for the disease

thats where more research is needed
there are a lot of treatment trials going on now that may be
promising using anticancer drugs and alzhiemers vaccines
i hope to become involved in one of those soon

so your donations and support for the alzheimers association is
important since they are the third largest supporter of research
in the world behind china then nih national institute of health

the quilter is from southern california

this quilt that was made for our silent auction was made by
a fellow classmate and friend of mine who is a plastic surgeon
who does quilting for a hobby
you can just imagine the quality of workmanship that went into
this quilt
weve had several quilters look at this quilt and thats one thing they
all have remarked on
is the quality of workmanship

she has quilted before for quilts to be auctioned for alzheimers research

he has progressed in his disease and was recently placed 

in a hospice house as he enters the last stage of this disease

his progression really bothers me a  lot 

i hope that my family can handle this as well as his wife and 

two girls have done

its a painful journey they are taking

i know if my diagnosis is correct that this is the path i will take like

the one my mother took and the one that he is on now

im hoping though that my journey along this path is at its 

beginning and that i have time to stop and enjoy life as much 

as i can 

i try to do that everyday as i know the clock is ticking
