walking helps

WALKING HELPS
it helps two ways
walking does

walking the least traumatic exercise and the least expensive form
of exercise
improves your health and related to alzheimers disease it increases
the blood flow to the brain cells
which improves memory and may help
slow down or prevent the onset of alzheimers disease

this last week while in san francisco one observation i made was
that you dont see hardly any morbidly obese people
maybe because more people walk there than most places
and
maybe because of all those dang hills

but

they also walk to end alzheimers there
as evidenced by this sign advertising their walk to end alzheimers
in san francisco

this second way walking helps alzheimers is that it raises money for
alzheimers research and for alzheimers education
its the major way that the alzheimers associaton raises money to
do all they do

go to www.alz.org to find a walk near you
all states have them

the walk that i am most involved in is the
williamson county walk to end alzheimers
which will be on saturday september 27, 2014 at 900 am
at the beautiful san gabriel park in georgetown texas

my team called
organicgreendoctor
is now asking for donations and asking for folks to join us
in that walk

our goal is $3000
we will have an online silent auction that starts next thursday
to raise $1000
click here or go to www.32auctions.com/ogd to preview our
first items

so you can walk to end alzheimers in two ways
for yourself
by getting walking exercise increasing your brains
blood supply
and
for others
by raising funds for research and education

we are so close to being able to treat this disease
we cant do it without your help

to join and or donate to my team organicgreendoctor

or
form your own team where you live

im doing my part as much as i can
for myself
for my family

LIVE LONGER
i read this article from yahoo health today on walking
its what ive been saying for several years
exericise doesnt have to be complicated or expensive

simply walking has big benefits
i use to encourage patients to walk 5 days a week for
30 minutes

according to this article here are the benefits

live longer-a 13 year study showed that people who walked
lived longer and spent less on health care

diabetes-walking at least 30 minutes a day can help
prevent type 2 diabetes which is increasing in the younger
as well as older population
if you have diabetes walking every day at least a mile can
decrease the risk of death from all causes by 50%

memory-there can be a decrease in memory decline in those
with alzhiemers who walk
it increases the grey matter in the brain which is the part that
shrinks with age and shrinks worse with alzheimers
you got it i try to walk every day

blood pressure-walking can significantly lower the blood
pressure
no copay for drugs     no side effects     no labs needed
to monitor side effects

bone health-walking can increase bone density
plus you get sunlight which increases your vitamin d levels

stroke-walking in one study decreased the incidence of
stroke by 50%

mood-you just feel better when you walk
one study showed walking worked better than antidepressants
and without those side effects

weight loss-walking regularly can burn off as much as 7 lbs a year
add calorie control to that and the weight loss is greater

insomnia-walking regularly in the morning can improve your
sleep at night

heart-walking by women can decrease their risk of heart disease by
30-40% and men by 50%

after reading this article ive got my walking shoes ready to go
so i can live longer with decreased chance of diabetes, high blood
pressure, stroke, heart disease, depression while having an
increase in mood, mental alertness, bone strength, and sleep

cost $0

OMEGA 3
was glad to see the latest report on omega 3
i gave them up several weeks ago
got tired of choking on those big pills and burping fish burps
all day

my pill box was so full
now i have more room to get them all in it
as i take aricept for possible alzheimers    lipitor and niacin  for cholesterol
aspirin for the heart and omeprazole for acid reflux
those two big ole omega 3 pills just didnt fit in there very well

here today gone today, frozen pipes, heat wave, more on walkin, kylas kreations

HERE TODAY GONE TODAY
the snow was here today then gone today
no shoveling needed
made a few snowballs and hit my wife she with them
snow was good and soft
now its gone

FROZEN PIPES
if you live in this area be warned
when the pipes thaw today thats when
the frozen bursted pipes start their damage
do a survey of your exposed pipes

HEAT WAVE
we will have a heat wave here today
it will be in the 50s
maybe the fish ponds will thaw  so my cubed ice gold fish
can now move

will find out today if my plants survived the freeze
think my artichoke bit the dust as the wind blew off
my row cover and left it exposed to the 15 degree temperatures

have a lot of frozen eggs available

MORE ON WALKIN
more on walking
the hippocampus of the brain is the area where short term memory
activity occurs

in a study done on inactive persons aged 60-80 who
were  otherwise in good health researchers had them do 40
minutes of aerobic activity 3 days a week for a year

the control group were similar persons who only did stretching
exercises and toning exercises

they then had regular mris of the brain and memory tests at the
start of the study, in 6 months, and in 1 year

in the group that did the aerobic exercise the hippocampus grew
which correlated with the improvement on the memory  tests

in the group that did not do aerobic exercise the hippocampus
actually shrank

the hippocampus is the area affected by azhehiemers

so exercise may be able to improve memory and may be an
important part in the prevention or the delay of  memory loss

add this to the list of reasons to walk (for all ages)

KYLAS KREATIONS
this is an ad for 'kylas kreations'

pedestrian textin n walkin, wedding journey, mulch not dirt, sage

PEDESTRIAN TEXTIN N WALKIN
from an ap story about texting and walking
can chew gum and walk without causing problems but
texting and walking can be a problem

some examples
two women texting and walking their babies in baby
strollers ran right into each other-head on collision
luckily no harm done

a women was texting the birthdate of someone to a friend
who had texted her
she was in another city  and walked into a water fountain
it was caught on video and is now on youtube
got several million hits     shes suing    thats american

another lady was texting and walked in front of a oncoming
taxi
luckily she did not get hit

the reporter observed that 1 in 10 pedestrians were walking
and texting

then there was a panhandler who was sitting and texting while
seeking donations
now that aint right

now dont text and drive (always thought that was supid but will
admit have done it before) and now dont text and walk

WEDDING JOURNEY
my son he and his fiance she are on their way on their journey
(go to google to the right and type in wedding journey to
know more)
they are on schedule
they only have a few months to go
am told will have to wear tux
blue jeans boots and string tie wont do

MULCH NOT DIRT
a recent article about granger texas returning to normal after
making true grit scenes there
the dirt streets seen in the movie are the streets in granger
but with mulch scattered over the streets to look like dirt

man sure could have used some of that in my compost pile
wonder if it was cedar

SAGE
if you think you could have alzheimers or mild cognitive impairment
you should go to this web site www.sagetest.osu.edu

this is a test developed by ohio state university department of
neurology  division of cognitive neurology

this is a self administered test that you can do on yourself or
friend or relative
there are instructions on scoring the test

if you or they dont score well then you should see a physician
for further evaluation

my diagnosis is early mild cognitve impairment
i took the test this am and got everything correct
however when was given a 2 hour neuropsychological exam i
failed the part on short term memory (it was a more involved testing)

because i had a normal evaluation 15 months ago and then had
the abnormal one recently plus the fact ive noted subtle changes plus
my strong family history of alzheimers got me to where i am now-
retired and on aricept (donnepezil)
