one of the blogs i follow is called missing jim
confessions of an alzheimers wife

its the story
a true one
of a families journey with the diagnosis of a young dad in
his early 50s with alzheimers disease

now ive read this and even commented on this blog
several times over the last few years
following his downfall into that alzheimers abyss

how it affects and mostly overwhelms the wife
named karen
she is well known in the alzheimers advocacy arena
for her support of alzheimers research caregiver support
alzheimers financial support etc
how their kids are affected

we who have read this blog for awhile
usually dread reading the next one
those of us who know about alzheimers
know that things dont ever get better
they havent

i have read her blogs and cried multiple times

i think this blog chronicling jims decline
is bothersome to me
it seems to mimic the decline of my younger brothers
into that abyss
seeing how bad he got
how much it affected his family
emotionally and financially

now in this last blog
jim has reached
that time

when it is time to let go
its hard

i can remember seeing my younger brother a month
before he died
thinking as i sat outside with him with a brother and sister
seeing him not able to communicate with us
unable really to eat and swallow well
alzheimers does that eventually
takes over all the brain
so that rudimentary functions are eventually wiped out

as i sat and watched him that day
i thought to myself
please dont let me get this far
take me sooner please

later back in my motel room
i sat down and cried
i knew that would be the last time i would ever see him

so is jim
where he was
in those final days
before death will take him
give him and his family some relief

this is an awful disease
i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy

i dont want to go there
please spare us

i will speak at 900 am on my involvement with alzheimers studies
at the alzheimers disease center at ut southwestern
on several new drug treatment studies that show promise
to finding a treatment and maybe a cure if we are lucky
