garden news-kids playground

GARDEN NEWS-KIDS PLAYGROUND

at our community garden we have these three giant pumpkins that i think the birds planted in our front area
its not even in a garden bed just in the walking around area out front

this week as i was working in my individual plot i looked up and an 8 year old girl and her mom and their cute little dog on a leash walked up to our gate and was peering over it
i walked over as they were leaving and asked if they wanted to walk around inside
yes they said
over 30 minutes later they were still there walking around
what kept them there so long were the chickens
i pulled some kale and collards for the little girl to feed them
she loved the chickens

now mr h and ms b come to the garden often
we just let them out of the car and they entertain themselves for an hour or two

our grandson mr nfn spent several days with us
he hasnt been to the garden as much since he lives a couple hours away
so
we gave him a tour

the first thing he found was the giant pumpkin
which he hugged and patted on entering the garden area
he did the same as we left

we next wandered to the chicken area
their pictures and names are on the fence
he was feeding the chickens kale and collards like the little girl the day before did

he was hooked

once he got use to the chickens and he knew they were his friends then he went inside the fenced area
lifted the lid to the laying nests and removed 12 eggs the chickens had laid

he also got a couple of handfuls of chicken scratch and fed it to them which the chickens loved
he spent a lot of time with the chickens

next we wandered over to our compos bins
i dug out some compost and placed it on the top of a bucket
he used a stick to find worms
he held them in his hand and watched them wiggle around
im not sure if he has picked up worms before
well
now he has
he is hooked like most kids are
he also found a few roly polys to play with

next we wandered through our orchard where we have around 60 trees
he found a giant gopher mound which was perfect for using his excavator to dig in the dirt

yes his hands were quite dirty when he left
we washed them more than once

he also found a tomato plant with cherry tomatoes and ate all of them
he also found the strawberry patch and picked several strawberries
he found a cucumber i had picked and he ate most of it
he also grabbed some kale and chomped on it

then finally we ended up with a walk though our banana grove
he was mesmerized by the bananas hanging high in the trees
i told him monkeys lived there and then shooked the trees
it sounds just like monkeys do jumping around up there
that entertained him even more

i pointed out our resident monkey george which i lifted him and let him pet him
that made his day

no george isnt real
i put him there high in a tree to entertain the kids with
i shake the banana trees
the kids eyes get real wide
they get real quiet

they love it

then we went by the avocado trees and he picked two giant avocados he took home with him

mr nfn absolutely loved the community garden as do most kids that go there
