nashville sounds on tarry time

Walk to End Alzheimers
we are walking in the bell county/temple
walk to end alzheimers on saturday november 3 2012

you can walk free but a donation to and or joining
my organicgreendoctor team is appreciated

please join us

NASHVILLE SOUNDS ON TARRY TIME
i like country western music but i also like classical music
and other popular music
heck i even like some rap music

so one of the spots on our bucket list was
nashville
my motherinlaw loves country music and especially
loves the old country music like merle buck wylon willie
so we deciced to all fly there this last week and weekend
to do the nashville tour and hear the nashville sounds

would say she was the most excited of the three

i have this thang about being on time
i like to get to the airport at least two hours
before the flight leaves
its bode me well in my life time
it allows for unexpected delays

im sure you have friends or families-you know who
you-are that dont seem to carry a watch or have a sense
of time

one of those is my wet suitcase sisterinlaw
i wont use her first name but lets call her 'tarry'
she has what we call 'tarry' time
its not always the time that my watch says
think she doesnt set her timer to the daylight savings time
it seems to always be off

i never let her take me to the airport
i like to be there early
her timer allows her to be the last one to board the plane
and arrive
you know the one that delays the flight as we are all sitting
and waiting for the take off as she is getting processed through

once on an international flight her hubby forgot he had his
swiss army knife in his pocket and yes they were late
and yes they got caught with the knife and yes
the plane was deplaned and baggage was searched and
everyone was pissed at them
(bet that was a long international flight)

yes i understand how they felt
been there done that
ie been on 'tarry' time

this wet suitcase sisterinlaw wanted us to visit
them in nicaragua this summer and wanted me to get
my passport so i could come there
actually she bugged me about it for 2-3 years so
i last year got my passport and she was happy when i
used it to visit them

so last week our plane was leaving at noon time
we were all packed the night before and since
we live 1 hour from the airport i wanted to leave 3 hours
before the flight left
no wet suitcase sisterinlaw experience for me

we got everything in the car
i finished getting dressed and where in the heck is my
billfold
could not find it everywhere
called the place i had last used it and no it wasnt there
that was 2 days ago when i had used it last

since im retired i dont carrry my wallet with me any more
unless im going somewhere
because i get compost garden soil hay and other unwanted
things in it

it was no where to be found
all my credit cards and debit cards were in there
luckily i never carry any cash with me
no social security card in there
no one had a credit card for us to use on our trip
my wife she had $400 dollars
i had just electronically moved most of my cash out of
my credit union account to my other accounts with a
mutual fund company so it was not accessible

i had $700 in my account left
i couldnt access my brokerage account quickly
it usually takes 1-2 days to move money
i did it that way for safety reasons

luckily we had prepaid for all the places we would go
except for our hotel room
we pooled all our money and decided lets go anyway

then wait i cant get on the plane because i dont have any
photo id with me
(guess i couldnt vote in some states)
then i remembered
my passport that my wet suitcase sisterinlaw convinced me
to get
(ok thanks for convincing me to get the passport
that sure hurt to write that)

we dashed to the bank with my passport
cancelled my atm card cancelled my bank credit card then
emptied out my checking account and
off we went to nashville

we made it to the airport 30 minutes before the plane left
thank goodness for the easy accessible austin airport
and the passport
and off we went

so thats what its like to be on 'tarry' time

wtea update, damn pill, my way

Walk to End Alzheimers

WTEA UPDATE
heres the update on our wtea team for
saturday september 29 2012 at
georgetown texas

our goal is $5000 and we have raised $3100
so far
we have 20 team members and
have had 46 donors so far

we hope to reach our goal of $5000 and are
open to anyone who wants to walk with us
that day

DAMN PILL

one of the things i want to do with this blog is to
write about things as i go along with this possible
alzheimers disease while i can
as it progresses if it does i realize that my ability to
write this blog will gradually diminish

i quit those omega 3 pills not because of the recent
journal article questioning whether they help or not
but because they were big and because i was tired
of taking extra pills
i even quit my fiber pill also that ive been taking for awhile

i sure want to quit that dam pill that aricept (donepezil)
that im on because i might have earlyearly alzheimers
even though taking it may not really help me much
30% chance itll delay things 30% chance itll stay the same
and 30% chance it wont help at all

the biggest problem with that damn pill is that it
causes insomnia
sometimes i just cant sleep as can seen by my posting
of my blog sometimes
i compensate by my noon napping to make up for lost sleep
i guess it all comes out even sometimes
but it does interfere with what i like to do sometimes

my younger brother with alzhiemers takes his at night and
never had any problem with it
it was recommended that i take it in the morning so that it
wouldnt affect my sleep
that doesnt work well

so i decided this week after two sleepless nights to take
it at bedtime like my bro does

that was a mistake
i was wide eyed all night got 3 hours sleep and was ready to
post my blog that day at 230am

so ive decided to go back to the am taking of that damn pill
and try to limit my noon nap some to see if that would help
i also cut back some of my am coffee to see if that would
help and
worse have cut back some on my chocolate
thats the hardest to do though

i do exercise every day so that helps some
i have noted that if i do an all day work day here or at
the habitat for humanity house build that i sleep real good

i do think about all those demented patients who are taking this
pill though who cant verbalize the side effects they are having

damn pill guess for now ill just have to keep taking it

MY WAY
i think my wet suitcase sisterinlaw and my wife she sent me
this picture for a reason

cyclotexting, basketball

CYCLOTEXTING
cyclotexting is a new word that i made up after i heard this story
below

pedexting is where people text while walking
philadelphia as an april fools joke opened a pedexting lane on
one of its sidewalks and will leave it there for a while
theres the video of the lady pedexting into the water fountain and the
story of the lady that pedexted off the wharf into the water

well now there is
cyclotexting
cyclotexting surely not this
who would text while riding a bicycle
lance wouldnt do that

well my wet suitcase sisterinlaw would
there is always an adventure or story when they come to visit
last time it was the wet suitcase story
she still wont let me and her poor husband live that one down
she even didnt read my blog for weeks because of the blog i
wrote about madonnas half time show
still didnt like it and she still liked it

so my sisterinlaw the wet suitcase one and her husband were on
a bicycle ride (she didnt have a helmet on so theres your sign there)
she was riding in a rural like area and decided she would
text her friend while bicycling and wish her a happy birthday
bad bad bad mistake

as she was passing this family all by the themself in a park enjoying
their nice picnic lunch she started coasting and began texting her
friend
as she did her foot slid off the pedal into the spokes of the
front wheel
if youve ever done that before you know what happened next
its like slamming the brakes on your car
you stop fast
her foot was stuck
it hurt real bad
somehow her friend was on the phone and could hear it all
she thought my wet suitcase now cyclotexting sisterinlaw was
dying

her foot had to be extracted from the front wheel by her poor
husband and the guy who was eating the picnic lunch with his
family

her foot began to swell and instantly looked like as she described
it it would explode it was so big

her husband jumped on his bike to ride the two miles to their house
to get the car so he could come back and pick her up
when he got there she had the keys
he had to ride back and get the keys

oh honey my foot is going to just explode

he finally got the car and brought her home

the poor family who was doing the picnic packed up and went home

luckily her son was with a friend whose dad was a foot specialist
no broken bones were present just a bad crush injury

please read this story and dont cyclotext
(should be called psychotexting)

im sure no one else has ever done this before
so i googled images of texting while bicycling
and yep
there are a lot of those people out there

BASKETBALL
kentucky won
kansas tried to come back but couldnt catch up
kentucky is one and done
they will have to reload again next year
now for the nba playoffs next

fires, skin cancer, rash

FIRES
lately around here because of the heat and lack of rain fires
seem to be a daily or weekly occurrence
when i drove to dallas this week there were quite a lot of
areas that had burned around here

when we got back from our wedding journey this summer and
after we heard the story of the fire that burned the peoples
house we stayed at during the wedding we mowed a large area
around our house as a protective barrier
one cigarette onto our pastures would burn all my property
we have had several old hackberry trees die from the drought
also and these would burn easily

the fire would go fast and probably couldnt be stopped before
the fire departments got there
luckily my house sits on a 1 acre enclosed area inside the middle
of my property
we have kept the grass cut low this summer on this 1 acre
(we only cut it once since it was dry as it all went dormant
it is all native grasses)
the rest of the pastures have been allowed since we have been
here to go completely la naturale
i have planted native grasses also in bare spots over the last
few years
so 90% of my property would burn rapidly
this is what use to happen on the prairie before we all got here

near here a fire broke out this week and burned 15 homes and
displaced quite a lot of people
luckily the fire departments acted fast to contain the fire
a few days before a few miles away hundreds of acres were
burned and was eventually contained
luckily no loss of life occurred

what we need is an end to this drought
on a recent walk i stuck my walking stick (thanks jr for the stick)
into one of the cracks in the pasture and the stick went down
3 feet into the ground
that first rain we get will probably disappear down all those
holes

in my pastures there are patches of green stuff growing
everything else is brown and dormant
as i went to a grass seminar recently on native grasses i was
able to identify the grass-it was switchgrass which is a native
grass that is good to have on your property
it got there when i planted the seeds a few years ago
maybe it will spread since the others arent seeding this year

a new storm is brewing in the caribbean
maybe it will head this way and give us some rain
lets go h-------- storm

SKIN CANCER
today i pay the price of sun worshipping a lot during my lifetime
i have a lesion that has popped up on my left cheek that
appears to be an actinic keratosis (a pre cancerous lesion) that
grows from too much sun exposure
if it is this ak (actinic keratosis) it willl be frozen off and be gone

if it has developed further as i have neglected to have it taken care
of for a few months (doctors make bad patients)
then it may have developed into a squamous cell cancer which
will have to be surgically removed
or
it may be a basal cell cancer which is also treated surgically
once it is removed it rarely returns

the one you dont want to get is melanoma
here is a picture of what it may look like

see the brown areas around the edges with the black
areas in the middles
thats what a melanoma looks like
if you have one of this dont sit around and watch it grow
it can metastasise to anywhere in the body
if caught early it can be cured as cured as cancer is cured
if caught later it becomes more difficult to treat

why did i get this lesion on my face
i worship the sun
i have always been an outside person all my life
and have not been a good sun screen person until the
last several years
a lot of damage got done when i was younger that now im
paying for
there probably will be more that will show up as i get older

note: most of the melanomas ive seen in my career were
in young people in their 20s and 30s

so wear a wide brimmed hat
wear long sleeves when possible
use a good suncreen that doesnt sweat off
reapply sunscreen when needed during the day
avoid going outside the hottest times of the day
wear sunglasses
if you get a lesion get it checked
dont do like i did and wait awhile before you get it
taken care of

RASH
videomedicine is the way of the future assisted by skyping
texting and emailing

(i recently was a participant as a patient in a videomedicine project
of the university of texas medical center in dallas using it to do
long distance videoconferencing of a neuropsychological exam
this will be used to do assessments at isolated clinics miles
away from the university)

my wet suitcase sisterinlaw is in central america with her family
something always happens to her every summer when she goes
there
last time she got a bad staph infection in her foot from stepping
on coral or something when surfing
she eventually recovered but was miserable for days with fever
and pain

now this time she got a kidney infection and was running fever
this started the same day she got zapped by a sting ray on the
heel which caused a great amount of pain

after two days of the antibiotic she developed a rash and felt
miserable (again)
so she texted my wife she and later emailed me so i could get
a better history without having to read all that text jargon some
of which i couldnt understand
rsh rd swln fvr nd yur hlp
so i got a good history from her by email
we tried skyping but the connection was bad and i needed a
finer picture to look at
so she texted me a picture of a body part that appeared to be
a thigh
it was the rash that you commonly see in a reaction to antibiotics
she was told to stop the offending antibiotic
take benadryl every 8 hours until she could get into the doctor
in a few hours
and to drink extra fluids to help flush her kidneys well

so this is how we may all communicate to get health care in
the future

i didnt mind doing it for her as i owed her for the wet suitcase story

she eventually went to the er there and got a shot (probably a
steroid shot) and got a new prescription for a new antibiotics
24 hours later she felt much better

yes even more wedding journey

MORE WEDDING JOURNEY
remember as you read this that sometimes bad things
turn out to be good things

so here we go
this could be a real bad day
we have 5 people in a small one bedroom apartment with
one bed and just enough cushions from the couches to make
3 cushion beds
we are all tired and im real tired and running on 2 hours sleep
and still wired from being caffeinated last night
this is not going to be good

(my best medical school friend would call this something that
i cant post on this blog but my wife she and i and he
knows what those words are)

so we called around and this is summer soltace celebration here
in santa barbara and there are no rooms available anywhere for miles
except for one room at a resort hotel here for $475 a night so we
booked it as i decided if it was $1000 a night i didnt care

so that was done so i thought

well here we went with 5 people with not enough sleep
so now we have to go to a luncheon for the guys and then
go to this museum for a tour-yeh thats all i need is to do
a 3 hour museum tour with no sleep and being grouchy at the
same time

this is not what i wanted to happen the day before my sons wedding
we wanted it all to go perfect
(it did eventually)

so we go to lunch and have a great meal at an old cafe here in
santa barbara then to that dam musem

so why did he/she decide to send us to this dam museum today
when we are so busy (and now so tired)

we arrived to this building on the top of a hill overlooking
santa barbara
oh my goodness we spent 3 hours there and none of us wanted
to leave
go to google and google dreier museum santa barbara to read
all about this place
got to hold one of babe ruths bats and swing it around
got to hold one of michael jacksons outfits from his first music
awards that sucker was heavy, saw one of only two honus wagner
baseball cards that exists, got to touch multiple items that were
worth $1000000 and so much more that it was so overwhelming
its hard to remember it all
(and thats not an mci problem)

it was hard to leave because we wanted to see more or all of it
as we know we might never get another chance to visit as they
only let selected groups tour the place
(check a bad thing became a good thing)

well guess that rehearsal dinner is more important

we called to let the hotel know we would be later getting in today
so they said
what reservation we dont have a record of a reservation
well now here comes a low point as we were just getting off the big
high from the museum tour
later it got better

next we had a mad dash back to the 5 person apartment now with
6 people to suddenly get dressed and make the mad dash to the
rehearsal
that was a lot of fun but we dashed to the rehearsal and
guess what
we 6 were the first ones there

we went through the rehearsal  wihout any problems
what a great weekend for the wedding
the weather was and is perfect
this is important as it is an outside rehearsal dinner and wedding

survived the rehearsal now to to the rehearsal dinner
i just wanted to get that toast over
hope i go first

we called (that is my wife she called) the hotel back as they
were checking on our reservations
answer is sorry mam we didnt make that reservation as we have
been booked for awhile and we havent had rooms available for
awhile either
now that sucks big time
6 people in one small apartment is not going to be good
the night before the wedding

we went on with the rehearsal dinner and we have to be in a good
mood as we are the hosts

lets see we are tired, i have to give the toast, some of us dont
have a place to sleep tonight but we will make this work
remember mistakes here will last a lifetime

as it turned out a bad thing turned out to be a good thing
because during the rehearsal dinner as we were visiting before we
got to sit down to eat a friend of my older sons finances shes family
said if yall need a place to stay while you are here we have a
guest room and another room you can stay in
without knowing we needed a place to stay

well the stars are starting to line back up again

(to that couple and their son we want to thank them so very
very much for allowing us to stay at their place and probably
saving the wedding journey weekend for us
and to allow us to have met you which we would not have got
to know as well as we did if we had not stayed at your house
thanks so much to j m and d)

whoa what a change in things thanks to someones kindness
another bad thing became a good thing

now that problem is solved
now to that toast speech
i got up did my speech and toast without crying too much
i had edited out a line about meeting my now daugterinlaws shes dad
and how i wished i could have got to know him better
and how i wished he could be here to enjoy this happy event
because i couldnt say this part even when practicing it without
crying
i added part of it though at the last minute as i felt it was important
to mention him as his presence was felt throughout the week

we had a great rehearsal dinner that night on that cool pleasant
night at that amazing my wet suitcase sisterinlaws shes house
she did a great decorating job and a great job of helping us
host this event and also she gave a great speech and toast

(to my wet suitcase sisterinlaw you are an amazing person
thank you so much)

(ok i apologize now for getting your suitcase all soaked when
your husband and i put wet plants in your suitcase on one of
your trips to austin-please forgive me)

so a bad thing turned out to be eventually several good things

thanks to the dreier musem and to my oldest sons fiance shes
good friends and to my wet suitcase sisterinlaw shes great hosting

next the wedding day
(hint it was a great day)

missing blog, adni-2, wedding journey, bb

MISSING BLOG
blog was missing last week because i use google blog to
do my blog and it was shut down for repairs so this blog
took the day off
also we were involved with a wedding journey event at our
house this weekend that consumed a lot of time prepping for

am back online blogging
so here we go

ADNI-2
here we go on the last part of round one
today have to have the spinal tap done
worst part is the 12 hour fast with no coffee or food just water
the spinal fluid will be sent for analysis for the tau protein level
which unravels in the brain cells in alzheimers and for amyloid
levels which are thought to be the culprit or the end result of
whatever causes alzheimers

these test results i will be able to see since i will obtain some
of the fluid to send off myself for analysis
the testing done by the research study is kept from review
the specimen is sent off to california and the result is never known
to me
but the specimen i send off will provide results in a few weeks
as i find all these results out i will post them in this blog

i dont fear the spinal tap at all
have almost got use to getting stuck with the needles
find the neuropsych tests are dreaded the most
lets see its a pretzel, hammock, and a pelican
if you have taken one of these you know what those mean
they show you pictures and you have to name the objects
i always miss these three things for some reason
hope its not from alzheimers

also will have a pet scan done with an experimental radioactive
substance called florbetapir f-18 (no thats not a typo)
the stuff will be injected and the brain takes it up whereever
there is amyloid showing up

funny thing about these tests are they can be positive but they dont
always correlate with the degree of sympoms a patient has
(that is true though of a lot of diseases)
the final diagnosis is made at brain autopsy
hopefully these tests will make the true diagnosis in the future more
accurate for this terrible disease

however i will know soon whether or not with some degree of
certainty if what i have is due to alzheimers

here we go

WEDDING JOURNEY
well the wedding journey continued this weekend
we are on the home stretch to being finished
this weekend we had a meet the wedding couple party at our house
boy that sure wore me out
it started with a trip to unplugged at shady grove in austin listening
to singer slaid cleaves
hes a local singer and i liked him because he is a organic
green person
his cabin in maine is completely off the grid
well my cabin is almost off the grid-am close

then on friday night after a meal in downtown austin at moonshines
with the wedding family we went to a jackson browne concert
stirred up some memories from the past
he also is a organic green person
he has  a house near santa barbara that is completely off the grid
watched a show about it on ed bagleys green show
if you dont know who ed bagley is then google him
some of my friends tell me i remind them of ed bagley

thanks to my wet suitcase sisterinlaw for the tickets and for the
vip passes to meet jackson browne and for the help in prepping
for the party
(that prepping is a big blog to itself)

on saturday we had a meet the wedding couple at our house
what a great group of people were there
we all had fun
no stick in the mud types were there

but man all that wore me out
those who know me well know i like to go to bed early and get up
early (just look at the posting times of this blog)
well thats not what happened this weekend
felt like i do when you go to las vegas for three days

am now in recovery mode

the best to the wedding couple

BB
so thats why rose is the mvp
the bulls blew up the heat

durant came through yesterday

days 8-12, bb, try again

DAYS 8-12
well we finally finished the trip to santa barbara
if did not like texas so much would live in santa barbara
the weather is always about the same
never to hot and never to cold (not like we get in texas and
nothing like the northern states)

they actually get less rainfall than we do here in texas
and we dont ever get enough
think that the moisture from the ocean probably helps a lot
and the lack of extreme heat
many people dont have air conditioning there
can you imagine no ac in central texas

my wet suitcase sister in law she (the one we were visiting in
santa barbara) says that the worse thing to be in this world
is a black cow in texas in the summer time

we mostly vegged out there
watched several basketball games
toured the beaches
watched my nephew he (brother of my rain water tank
nephew he) in a play that he  was in
he sings, dance, acts in the play
he also plays soccer, loves soccer, and beats everyone at
soccer video games
he also sings with andrea bocelli on some of his christmas
specials
has been on tv several times with the specials-hes the blond kid
that sings in the group with andrea bocellli

thanks to the wet suitcase sister in law shes  and my mother in law
shes hospitality (especially for the sees candy-yum yum)

as usual got plantings of plants from their yard to try to grow here
well see if they grow

my wife she attended a wedding journey event but i did not
have to participate-yes
spent quality time with my older son he all afternoon
enjoyed that

we ate at two great restaurants there
one was trattoria mollie in montecito california
the food was italian and was excellent
this is where my son he and his finance she will have their wedding
party meal before the wedding
she cooks some for oprah and has cooked for the obamas in the
white house
she is a interesting story-a self made women who trained in italy
and has had this restaurant since the early 1990s
one of jeff bridges recommended restaurants

the other is a place we always have to eat at when we go
to santa barbara
its real fresh authentic mexican food
the la super rica taqueria
trip is never complete unless we eat there
usually there are long lines outside especially on weekends
always a good side of good food

we finally have made it back to texas
we had a great time
wished we had spent more time on hwy one but know we will
have more chances in the future to do it again but maybe not
where that road fell in
know that sometime in the future may not remember it though

when we got off the plane though in texas i kneeled down
and kissed the ground
was glad to be back

BB
this is the time of the year when i like to watch womens basketball
tonight baylor plays texas am
its big and tall vs stocky
should be a good game
can baylor beat am 3 times in one year

uconn plays duke-hope they play better if they want to win another
championship

stanford won and is in the final four
notre dame beat tennessee
sure wanted to see tennessee play ucon as know those
coaches dont like each other
maybe next year

TRY AGAIN
this is me in front of the monterey bay aquarium
google and the internet did not like my posting yesterday

white on white-osteoporosis in men, wet suitcase

WHITE ON WHITE-OSTEOPOROSIS IN MEN
my relative he is so white that if you stripped him naked and had him
face a white wall would not be able to see him
my relative he gets very little sunlight
my relative he gets very little vitamin d and calcium in his diet
my relative he gets very little weight bearing exercise
except for walking from car to work

my relative he may get osteoporosis as he ages and the complications
just like women do who develop osteoporosis

osteoporosis causes a weakening of the bones which overtime
increases the risk for broken bones  usually hip fracture is the most
serious in men
over 2 million men have osteoporosis
about 13 percent of adult white men over 50 years will have an
osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime-know who in our family that will be
is more likely in men over 70 years old

you are at risk for osteoporosis if you have a parent or sibling with it or
if you are a smoker   heavy drinker  have a slight build  have a low testosterone
have poor nutrition  or take certain drugs such as long term steroids

there are no symptoms early on in osteoporosis but later can
have loss of height  broken bones  stooped posture  and back pain

osteoporosis can be diagnosed with the bone density test

osteoporosis can be prevented by quitting smoking  decreasing alcohol intake or
stop drinking   getting weight bearing exercise
if you do not get enough calcium in your diet then supplements of vitamin d and
calcium may be  recommended
foods high in calcium are milk products  leafy green vegetables   sardines(yuk)
cat food sandwich(joke from previous blog-do google search on right
of this blog) salmon tofu and almonds
you can get enough sunlight for vitamin d production by getting direct sunlight for

THE WET SUITCASE
my relatives they visited us this weekend    see mondays blog
my brotherinlaw he likes to get plant cuttings to plant at his place
in another state
do the same when visit him-last time got cactus and a dragon fruit both of
which are growing
this time gave him some plants from my small pond  and some malabar spinach
put them in a plastic bag with water soaked paper towel
well maybe not soaked but maybe some extra water to be sure
triple bagged the plants
my sisterinlaw had room on the outside of her luggage
some one-no one will admit it-placed the plastic bag with maybe some extra
water in my sisterinlaws suitcase

when my sisterinlaw was taking the bags out of the car she said
why is my bag wet
no one admitted to anything   she was told it was from a bottled water
in the back of the car
she said there is no bottled water in the back of the car
well dont know why it was wet (hahahahahahaha)

well to make things worse they got stuck in denver overnight as their
transfer flight was canceled
my sisterinlaw opened her suitcase and all her clothes were soaking wet
sorry wasnt there to give my brotherinlaw some support
know it was a traumatic moment

hope he was able to transplant the plants when he got home
although they were probably planted in denver in the trash
