welcome to the organic green doctor blog

i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living
i will blog on these plus other things noted to be interesting

alzheimers news-seaweed for alzheimers

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-SEAWEED FOR ALZHEIMERS
Image result for organicgreendoctor
when you walk along the beaches you can see a lot of seaweed washed up on the shore
the birds and other animals can be seen picking at it eating it or the other animals
there must be something good in it that they are attracted to

ive seen at trader joes they have the sheets of seaweed you can buy that seems to melt in your mouth when you eat them
a little salty tasting but palatable

i use a lot of liquid seaweed in my garden
every new planting gets a drink of fish emulsion +seaweed+molasses
then
every two weeks or so i give them a new rinsing of the solution
you can see in a few days the burst of growth it stimulates

so its good for those seashore animals
good for my garden
good and tasty for humans
now
it seems
it may contain a substance that may slow down alzheimers

the fda has a class of meds or supplements they call medical food
it doesnt have to have the strict fda evaluations like fda approved drugs do
why they let the companies do this i dont know

back in october 2011 i started on a powder called axona that was in this class
supposedly it works by converting the medium chain triglycerides in the powder to ketones that the brain cells can use for food
by doing that it improves brain cell function which may improve memory

i took it for a few months and dont know if it helped or not
i finally stopped it
its still available but i dont think its used much by patients
so
this new stuff below may be in that medical food class

now
enter the chinese
they have isolated a substance a sugar called oligomannate from seaweed that they say my help slow down the progression of alzheimers and improve memory
it may work by removing beta amyloid in the brain

it just got approved for use in china for this
from what i can understand its like the approval of stuff here in the us as medical food
the fda allows this stuff to be sold as medical food without the strict scientific proof that my biogen aducanumab has to have in order to get approved

so in china you can get this stuff
is it proved it definitely works
no
but
it might

as i have said before it might is good enough for me
for
im doing a lot of it might stuff that might or might not slow mine down

now i talked to some university researchers who are looking at doing part of the scientific research here in the us that needs to be done to prove whether or not if this stuff works

stay tuned for a final answer on it

yes
if i can get my hands on it i will
or
i might just start eating the trader joes stuff or sipping a tea from my liquid seaweed from my garden or just pick up a plug off the seaweed on the beach and put a pinch under my cheek like you would chewing tobacco

the name of this so called drug is oligomannate
it alters the gut biome or the gut bacteria to cut down on inflammation that can occur in our guts

since that inflammation that occurs in the gut biome gets transferred to the brain and causes inflammation there it is thought to work this way to improve memory by slowing brain inflammation
as i wrote above this may alter the beta amyloid in the brain
a phase 3 trial showed improvement in memory in just 4 weeks of treatment

the research needs to be done though to really prove if this helps or not
if it does
ill be the first in line to use it
since
it might help

here is the research article from cell research journal that was published recently
warning it has a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo in it

here is a brief less scientific description of oligomannate and how it works

is it a medical food or is it a drug that works
research needs to be done to prove if it works or not
until then
if i can get some ill use it
if not
ill just keep on truckin doing all those healthy things i need to be doing
