where did your state get its name

WHERE DID YOUR STATE GET ITS NAME

recently i found the youtube video below from a link from kim komando.com on how did each state get its name

i realized that i didnt really know where california got its name from
i thought it had something to do with a bear or something
wrong
so
i looked at the three states that i had lived at and also two others nebraska and louisiana

when you click on the video you can fast forward until you see the state you are interested in pop up on the video
then listen to the story

california around 3:00
california got its name from baja california when the spanish controlled the territory
the original word came from a book written in 1510 titled about queen calafia in a fictional island called california

texas around 10:45
texas used to be called new philippines
later it was named tejas from a caddo indian word taysha for friend
later the j in tejas was changed to texas
so howdy yall is texan for the caddo word taysha for friend

arkanssas around 10:00
arkansas got its name from the arkansas river
arkansas river got its name from a french version arcansas for a quapaw word akansas

louisiana around 11:00
louisiana got its name from louis 14 of france
that one was easy
louisiana is full of its original french influences

here i would like to make a shoutout for a friend who has written a three book series on a family in new orleans with the main character being a female
if you read this series you will understand the history of new orleans and louisiana
she was the author of the book last trip home
here is the link to info on the book
madeleine

nebraska around 9:33
nebraska got its name from a chiwere word nibraske for flattened water
maybe someone from nebraska can explain that one

so find your state of interest
move along that thermometer looking line until you see your state pop up on the screen
then listen to the discussion of how that state got its name

we need to be aware of where we came from and the history of where we came from
and
of course where we live
then
from there branch out to learning the history of where you have lived or where you are living now

sometimes we can learn a lot about ourselves when we do this

while you are at it you might read some on us history and on civics

i think we all could benefit from knowing more about civics and our history since many of us dont

maybe we could start with our politicians doing it first
right
