welcome to the organic green doctor blog

i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living
i will blog on these plus other things noted to be interesting

alzheimers news-could these two old meds used together slow down or stop alzheimers

ALZHEIMERS NEWS-COULD THESE TWO OLD MEDS USED TOGETHER SLOW DOWN OR STOP ALZHEIMERS

maybe
they do in the lab and in mouse studies
next
human studies

in the theory of alzheimers amyloid accumulates in the brain to form amyloid plaques
these plaques kill brain cells
then
later tau protein unravels inside of nerve cells in the brain
they get released to form tangles which kill brain cells
then
the body elicits a strong inflammatory response to this injury which kills more brain cell

this is what happens in alzheimers disease

my drug aduhelm (aducanumab) is given as a monthly infusion
its a monoclonal antibody given intravenously that binds to the amyloid plaques to remove them from the brain

in a recent study described in this article linked here researchers looked at two old generic drugs that when used together removes the amyloid from the brain of mice who have alzheimers

there is a cell in the brain called astrocytes
something in alzheimers goes awry such that beta amyloid accumulates in the brain cells
it appears that astrocytes are involved in that process

these drugs are
gemfibrozil brand name lopid
retinoic acid brand names retina a and accutane

gemfibrozil was used or still is used for cholesterol control especially triglyceride control
its not used much anymore
it was noticed that folks on it tended not to get alzheimers disease

retinoic acid is mainly known for the use in acne treatment

these drugs
are available for use
can be used off label
are cheap

when these two are used together at low doses they change the astrocytes so the astrocytes take in the amyloid then destroys it
you can read the article linked above for the details on how it happens

thats what my drug aduhelm does
it removes the amyloid from the brain
at a cost of $50,000+ a year

if this old drug combo was used it would be at a very low cost
eg
a month supply costs around $20 for gemfibrozil

now these studies were done on brain cells in a petri dish and on alzheimers mice
now
clinical trials would have to be done on humans
finding someone to volunteer for a clinical trial like this one would be easy im sure
one problem
these trials are expensive
eg my study cost millions of dollars to do on about 1700+ folks

biogen pays for my study

no drug company will pay for this study since there is probably not much money will be made off it since the drugs are so cheap

the only way this research will be funded is through
nih funding ie the federal government
alzheimers association research funding

these monies are competitive and can be hard to get for a particular research

i plan to keep an eye on this 2 drug regimen as it moves through the research world
usually these studies can take 5 years +-

consider donating to you local alzheimers organizations
a portion of the money donated goes to research

i have set up my team for the walk to end alzheimers in santa barbara named
organicgreendoctor at this link

because of the pandemic we will not be walking at the walk site but my wife she and i will walk a route up to the santa barbara mission by ourselves wearing our alzheimers walk shirts and carrying our alzheimers flags

we will be thinking of our lived ones who had alzheimers
mom nell
brother joe
probably dad charles
and
me

i seem to be the lucky one to have gotten a temporary reprieve

please feel free to donate to and or join our team to help raise funds to fight this awful disease
