garden news-ms b in the garden

GARDEN NEWS-MS B IN THE GARDEN

this is ms b digging through the worm compost from the worm composter thats located near the garden at her house
now when we first moved here she wouldnt even touch the dirt much less a worm
she separated out the worms and put them in a container
later she dumped them into the garden
she also found lots of roly-polies in the soil
since she is learning to count she counted the worms

her garden bed is 5 ft x 8 ft and is about 12 inches deep
the garden was there when they moved in 4 years ago
we added soil and compost to what was there

today though we decided it was time to remove all the soil and then start over
so
we shoveled out all the soil and put it onto cardboard and a large tarp

we then added cardboard on the bottom and wetted it down well with a water hose

then
we shoveled back in a layer of soil back into the garden
then
we added a layer of clippings from my community garden that had been run through a shredder
then
we added a layer of compost from her worm composter and her regular composter and from our community garden
then
we soaked this in well with a solution of fish emulsion and seaweed and molasses
then
we soaked this in well with a water hose
then
we shredded up newspapers and placed them on top
then
we repeated these layers until we got about 4 inches from the top of the garden sides
then
we added just layers of soil and compost until we filled the garden up
then
we added a good soaking of the fish emulsion and seaweed and molasses
then
we soaked it well with water from a water hose

this will be allowed to ripen and breakdown then later this month we will began to plant veggies in the garden

now ms b has planted seeds in 6 packs that are growing in our living room
when they are ready she will plant them in the garden

here  is her first 6 pack of sweet peas that grow on a vine
she knows how to plant them

she digs a hole
she adds a little compost
she lays in the transplant
she covers it up with dirt
she waters it in well with the fish emulsion and seaweed and molasses mixture
she closes her eyes
she makes a wish for herself and for the plant
i never ask her what she wishes

later she will plant carrots kale swiss chard radishes onions
yes kindergardeners eat all that stuff if they plant it themselves

so
thats how ms b gardens in her garden
